Nairobi Demo On Insecurity In Kenya

A good leader should not only have time for his close friends, but also to the little child who needs his help. Unfortunately, we live in a world where leaders are treated like gods. Hidden away from the general society and seen only in important functions, away from direct contact with people.

How would you feel when you have a pressing issues but you do not have an access to that single person who can let your problems fly away once and for all? This brings us to today’s main story, the demo in Nairobi town dabbed Occupy Harambee Avenue.

A week back when women demonstrated against gender violence on the streets of Nairobi, the main stream media covered that event fully, informing the public of every detail behind it a why the demo was important in the country.

Yes! We appreciated that. We learned of the importance of respecting our women and why they have a right to wear anything they want as long as they feel comfortable walking on our busy streets.

The police officers sent to provide security for demonstrators did not even come ready for riot, even when they knew something like that might happen.

Contrary to that, on Tuesday 25th November the police arrived at the venue where #Occupy Harambee Avenue demo was to be held armed in robotic attires(anti-riot gear), teargas canisters and long sticks as if ready for war with innocent civilians. And yes! The Kenyan media houses chose to play it cool… Something fishy, right?

Initially, the Inspector General of the police had banned the peaceful demo, citing security reasons. Unfortunately, insecurity in Kenya was the reason why the demo was planned. One wonders why he changed his mind and allowed it to happen. However, the police did what they do best— forceful dispersal of the crowd gathered to pass a message president and his security chiefs.

One thing that struck my mind was the presence of hired goons who wanted to derail a peaceful demo. Later it was revealed that an influential senator paid the individuals to carryout his evil desires.

So sad that people we call ‘leaders’ have curled themselves in a cocoon and protected by their fellow allies. As the public sings and cries because of insecurity, someone else is plotting how to support evil—going against the will of the majority. A demo is always the only way to pass a message to deaf ears.
