Children from the age of 10 years are the best time when a child should be taught about occupation. In our society today, the parents, teachers and the community are the main change agents when it comes to career discovery. But a teacher is the most influencing factor to a child’s career because it’s easy to observe and note what a child prefers most. And as such, the teacher will help a child to develop that career and the will to become focused.
Then something else, when a student joins high school he/she should be directed on what to become in the future. This is done by assisting the student to select subjects that go in line with his/her career aspirations. This means that subjects should match with one’s personality like a student who likes talking a lot or traveling or discovering should take the subjects that support the corresponding personality.
Courses and careers are experienced in the colleges and universities but high schools should lay a foundation for students to know what they would like to become. This means if a student wants to become a doctor, it’s important that he/she take those subjects that reflect the medical field. But in most high schools students do not get a chance to be guides on their careers because the teachers are not enlightened on issues concerning this field in any way. At the same time, these teachers are overloaded with a lot of work and thus have no time to do research to get crucial information concerning careers.
But when students are not enlightened on career discovery in high school, this becomes a problem to them when they join colleges and universities. According to recent surveys, 30% of students are lost since they feel that they are in the wrong course and thus do not want this course any longer. And 20% of students are willing to go back to the first year of learning so that they can do a course that they feel they best fit in.
