BOYS BEWARE. There, I gave you fair warning. This is Staceyann Chin’s reading of her own writing at a conference from 2009. If you couldn’t tell from the title, it’s all about being a girl and her experience growing up in Jamaica in the eighties as she blossomed into a young woman. She begins by talking about women in general and how we need to take control over our own bodies. She then reads a hilarious excerpt from her book about her first period and she closes with a spoken poem. She delivers it with such raw truth that it is sure to shock you. Her poem is about sexual abuse and that is a subject I am all too familiar with. One that a majority of women are far too familiar with. 1 in 4 women have been or will be sexually assaulted in their lifetime. If that isn’t enough to make you want to vomit, her poem will do it for you. She is terrifically strong.
