This Year Meme

Thought I would do a fun post for today and So I headed over to Sunday Stealing and found an old this year meme. So I decided to do it.

Here is what they have asked in the meme, and my answers as well.

This Year:

A bad habit I’m going to break: Procrastination! I am quite lazy and I have this habit of postponing things till the last moment. I will try to get rid of this habit. I am already trying.

A new skill I’d like to learn: I would like to learn numerology thoroughly. Though I know the basics but I want to be perfect at it. I have bought some books on the subject and I am reading a few pages daily.

A person I’d like to be more like: I would like to be kind and compassionate like Mother Teresa. I would like to get more involved with social work.

A good deed I’m going to do: I was a regular visitor at an orphanage but discontinued last year after leaving my job as the distance of the orphanage from my home is too much. I plan to start going there again and spend some time with the kids or may be I will look for some old age home/orphanage nearby.

A place I’d like to visit: Vrindavan. I have visited Vrindavan a few years back but I want to visit it again this year. I hope Krsna blesses me so that I am able to visit His birthplace this year.

Prabhupada: Messenger of the Supreme Lord [Biography of Srila Prabhupada, the founder Acarya of ISKCON]

A book I’d like to read: There are a lot of books on the list. I have so many unread books lying at my home which I want to read before buying any new book but still when I see a good book, I end up buying it. Top on the list at the moment is ‘Krsna’ and ‘Prabhupada’.

A letter I’m going to write: I don’t write letters anymore. It’s been quite a while since I wrote one.

A new food I’d like to try: Nothing in particular.

I’m going to do better at: Writing! I plan to write more and write quality posts.

Photo Story: A day at Chail

The above pic is of my son when he was probably 12-13 years old. We had gone to Shimla along with my office team members. It was a weekend trip as Shimla is a popular close station very close to my city. It takes about four hours to reach there by car. We left for Shimla early morning and reached Shimla by 11 am. The whole day was spent in sight seeing and we spent the night at Shimla. We planned to return the next day.

The next day we went to Chail which is a small hill station near to Shimla. The story goes that the ruler of Patiala Maharaja Bhupinder Singh was barred from entering Shimla during the British rule after he allegedly misbehaved with a British lady. Then the Maharaja vowed to build a new Summer retreat for himself and so Chail was developed as per his wish and requirements.

Whispering Deodars: Writings from Shimla Hills

Chail is at about 44 km distance from Shimla. It is a serene and beautiful hill station covered with forests of chir and deodar trees. We visited the Chail Sanctuary, Sadhupul. Later in the day, we went to the Chail cricket ground. The cricket ground at Chail is the world’s highest cricket ground which is located at an altitude of 2,444 meters. There is a beautiful tree house in the cricket ground. This pic was clicked at the Chail cricket ground. We came back home by the evening.

It was a lovely trip during the weekend which rejuvenated and refreshed us from the monotonous office life. The weather was pleasant during Summers and it was a nice escape from the busy city life. Such weekend getaways once in a while help in breaking the monotony of life and helps in relaxation and rejuvenation. We all thoroughly enjoyed the trip.

Taking the plunge

Have you ever contemplated doing something you love but then held back because of fear or self-doubts? This happens with most of us. We are stuck in jobs we don’t enjoy because of the financial security it provides. Leaving the job and starting a business or some venture seems too risky and we are afraid what if we don’t succeed. This fear is the main reason that we want to stay secure in our comfort zones even if it means that we are unhappy with the kind of work we are doing.

I, Steve: Steve Jobs in his Own Words

Why can’t we look at the successful people who dared to dream and succeeded? I am not asking you to seek inspiration from the legends like Steve Jobs or Bill Gates or Mark Zuckerberg. But seek inspiration from the ordinary people around you…the people you know…the people who kicked the jobs they hated to do something they love and had success.

I know a guy who left the security of his job to start his career as a motivational speaker. When I first met him, he was still struggling to carve a niche but seven years later, he is a successful man and travels across the region to conduct motivational seminars for students. He told me once that he was having troubles at his job and it was becoming impossible for him to continue. He had just five thousand rupees in his bank which wasn’t enough to cover the expenses for even a month. Yet he dared to go in the direction of his dreams. Now he is earning well, has earned name and money and doing what he loves & even making money our of it.

There will be hurdles on the way and it might happen that we may not be successful. But how will we know if we never try?

Blogging: The Ultimate Guide On How To Replace Your Job With A Blog (Blogging, Make Money Blogging, Make Money Online, Blogging For Profit, Blogging For Beginners Book 1)

I joined the site two days back and I see many known faces from other writing sites already there. Some of the known writers have also been paid which is encouraging and shows that the site is legit. However, there is a waiting period of a month for the payment to be processed which seems like a bit too long. But I don’t mind it as long as the site is paying.

The best part of the site according to me is the option of writing short posts which doesn’t take much of time. I have been on the site for two days and I have earned ninety points. I am sure that the earnings on the site would increase as I spend more time on the site and get more connections. I think this is a good alternative site to work on as the daily limit on blogjob has decreased and I have spare time in hand now. Besides writing ten short posts in a day is quite easy.

Those who are not yet on the site, please check this site out and join here.

I am willing to take a chance on this new earning opportunity that has been offered to me. What about you?

Photo Story: DSN with Bawa & Dinesh

Image Credit: The pic is from my collection.

This picture is around 5-6 years old. DSN course with Bawa and Dinesh was being organized in the city beautiful. Bawa and Dinesh are senior teachers of Art of Living Foundation and mostly take courses for youth. I had attended some sessions by Bawa and Dinesh Bhaiya during teachers training program at Bangalore ashram and their sessions used to be amazing. I always wanted to do a course with them and this seemed like a perfect opportunity. So I immediately registered for the course.

I had done DSN course twice before but this DSN was entirely different. It was youth centric and so the energy of the course was very high. Even the processes were a little different. The participants were divided into different teams and they were given various interesting tasks to complete. Our team got tasks like getting ten registrations for the next course, selling products by the rural team, going to the police station & thanking the officers for their service, performing a skit on over-population at a slum, cleaning a temple, giving a talk on Art of Living in a bus and so on. The tasks were aimed at breaking the barriers in the participants and making them more confident and outgoing.

The sessions and meditations by Bawa and Dinesh bhaiya were awesome. The sessions used to end late night, sometimes till 1 pm and we had to report again at the venue next morning at 6 am. It was very taxing but we thoroughly enjoyed the course.

The above pic was clicked during the last day of the course. This was my team during the course- Sushant, Harman, Pam, Prince, Shivani, Manoj, Abhimanyu and me. We all are still connected with each other through social media. It was one of the most amazing courses I have ever done.

My top 5 Simplicity bloggers

Over the last couple of years, I have realized that there is no ends to our wants and no matter how much we earn, it’s never going to be enough. It may be enough for our needs but not our greed. We spend the major part of our days working hard to fulfill our wants and desires. This leaves us little time to enjoy our life. We forget that the best things in life which really matter come for free.
And the simple solution to this is to embrace simplicity. A simple life means we have less wants & desires which means we need less money to pay our bills and thus we don’t need to slog 24*7 in the mad race to earn money.
I have been reading a lot of simplicity/minimalist bloggers over these past years and they never cease to amaze me with the kind of change they have brought in their lives by adopting a minimalist lifestyle. Some of the bloggers have adopted extreme minimalist lifestyle while ditching their high-paying corporate jobs and they are loving the positive changes it has brought to their lives.
Here are few of the minimalist bloggers I love to read:
•Tammy Strobel who lives in a tiny home and writes about minimalism and photography at her blog ‘Rowdykittens’. Check out her blog for the most amazing photographs.

You Can Buy Happiness (and it’s Cheap): How One Woman Radically Simplified Her Life and How You Can Too

•Leo Babauta who shares his passion for minimalism at ‘Zenhabits’.
•Joshua Fields Milburns and Ryan Nicodemus write about leading a simple yet happy life with less stuff on their blog ‘theminimalists’.
•Joshua Becker writes about his journey and thoughts on simple living at his blog ‘becomingminimalist’.
•Courtney Carver writes about living life with purpose at her blog ‘bemorewithless’.
All these bloggers write amazing posts with wonderful insights on living a meaningfull life by getting rid of excess!

Photo Story: Rangoli at work

Image Credit: This pic is from my personal collection.

As many of you know, I had been working for a leading media house before I quit my job last year. I worked for the organization for ten long years and had many close friends at office over the years. The two ladies in the above pic used to be my closest friends at work and we are still in regular touch even now. Good friends are indeed a blessing!

DivyaKala Acrylic Rangoli (DK22, 61 cm x 76.2 cm, Blue)

The human resources department had organized a rangoli making competition at office. This was the time when the problems had already started creeping in and the old employees were being harassed at work. As such, we had no enthusiasm about the competition and we had no desire to participate. The competition was taking place at the reception area and teams from different departments were busy in making their rangolis. The material required was provided from office. My colleague and I went there just to check out how others were doing. We were standing there when we saw our friend Neelam ma’m from human resources department working alone on her rangoli. So we joined in and started helping her with her rangoli. Since human resources department was not participating in the competition, nobody objected. So we helped out ma’m in making her rangoli well on time. The pic was clicked during that time.

There were six teams who had participated in the competition and had made beautiful, colorful rangolis but surprisingly the team which stood first was the all-boys team from the production department. They had made a geometric design rangoli very neatly and beautifully. Media marketing department had also made a very beautiful rangoli with Ganesha design and decorating it with small mirrors and diyas. It was really a fun-filled day at work.
