Hearthstone Has 50 Million Registered Players

Blizzard recently launched the new expansion for Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft called Whispers of the Old Gods. As the new expansion has released, so has their registered player base risen. The free-to-play card game now boasts 50 million registered users.

GamesIndustry.biz picked up the brief news bit, where Blizzard’s CEO Mike Morhaime commented about the milestone, saying…

“Whispers of the Old Gods adds an exciting new set of creepy, corrupted cards to Hearthstone,” […] “We can’t wait to see how creative players are with the ancient evil of the Old Gods in their hands”

Over on the official Battle.net website the company explains that the new expansion contains 200 new packs, brand new buffs, spells, attacks and defensive properties.

The theme of the expansion centers around the old gods… those Eldritch horrors that warp your mind. The new cards and abilities are also accompanied by a brand new board, along with the new strategies and tactics that can be employed.

This news about Hearthstone juxtaposes an interesting position for Blizzard because while the card game is growing their MMO is shrinking. They recently mentioned that they were in talks with the server operators of Nostalrius to maybe work something out in regards to revitalizing a vanilla server for World of Warcraft, but that seems very unlikely.

The crazy part about it is that given how badly they’re bleeding subscribers each year (about a million annually) one would think that it wouldn’t be too much of a risk to maybe invest in retaining the audience they have instead of pissing them off more?

Anyway, common sense isn’t the sort of thing that’s employed regularly at large corporations, so it’s likely that Blizzard will try to quarantine the vanilla server talks to that one thread on the World of Warcraft forums and leave it there to be buried under its own weight.
