There are some listings for the consumer version 1 of the Oculus Rift floating around on Craigslist and eBay for up to $3,500. The average listing is approximately around the $1,000 mark.
Business Insider is reporting that a lot of people who pre-ordered the Oculus Rift are already plopping the virtual reality headset up onto eBay and other bidding services for well over the $600 price tag.
There are plenty of listings of the Rift on eBay, and some on Craigslist., many of which are based on the pre-orders they placed for the device. The highest listed one on eBay seems to have 22 watchers (at the time of writing this article) and is going for $3,500.
Some of the Rift units have already arrived at the seller’s place and are ready to be shipped out, where-as others have not arrived at the seller’s place, yet, but you can bid on the item nonetheless.
I suppose the most common sense question in all of this is: why are people selling the Oculus Rift for upwards of $1,000 and why are a bunch of people actually bidding on this item?
Well, the easy answer is that the Rift is sold out all the way through to July, 2016. So you won’t be able to get your hands on the virtual reality device until later this summer.
The disappointment for some has led them to a point of willing to pay absurd prices to get their hands on the consumer kit of the Oculus Rift.
It seems like the wiser thing to do would be to just wait and get the HTC Vive, which is at least a couple hundred dollars cheaper than buying a Rift from eBay or Craigslist at this point.
Also, at least the HTC Vive doesn’t have an automatic toggle to keep you out of unapproved apps and games. There’s really no telling how far Facebook might go in trying to prevent people from using the Rift to view things they don’t want them to view… like porn.
Anyway, the HTC Vive goes on sale April 5th for $800. The Oculus Rift launched on March 28th for $600 but it’s all sold out until July. The PlayStation VR is set to go live in October for $399.99. Pre-orders for that have also already sold out at various online retailers. It looks like in limited quantities, VR headsets are actually in high demand.
