Sony finally released the full trailer for Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters, a reboot-qual of the classic action-horror-comedy from the 1980s. A lot of fans weren’t pleased that the movie was getting remade in the first place, but director Feig decided to use gender politics as the selling point for the reboot, a topic that has most normal people fed up and tired. Quite naturally, this led to a lot of wary feelings about what direction the reboot might go in, and after seeing the first trailer a lot of people just feel that they’ve put politics before comedy.
You can check out the trailer below. It clocks in at two and a half minutes. Some people are still trying to figure out if it’s a direct sequel reboot or just a reboot with some acknowledgment for the first films or just some amalgamation somewhere in between. Either way, not a whole lot of people are digging it.
Ghostbusters makes its long-awaited return, rebooted with a cast of hilarious new characters. Thirty years after the beloved original franchise took the world by storm, director Paul Feig brings his fresh take to the supernatural comedy, joined by some of the funniest actors working today – Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, and Chris Hemsworth.
To Sony’s credit they at least didn’t close down the like to dislike ratio, which is always a perfect way to gauge whether or not the general person likes a movie or not. The trailer has amassed 15 million views so far and more than 276,000 people have downvoted it, compared to the 145,000 who have upvoted it.
Many websites took the opportunity to cherry pick through the comments and craft a narrative that evil misogynists who run the internet have come out of the woodwork to hate on the movie because women star in the film. Nevermind that moves like Twilight, The Hunger Games or Divergent have managed to become massive successes while starring female leads, apparently these evil misogynists just don’t want women in films… nevermind also that Melissa McCarthy has made a career out of action comedies.
Nevertheless, sites like the Washington Post, who are not above posting libel, and Crave Online continue to run the narrative based on cherry-picked comments, completely ignoring criticisms from most average people or women themselves who didn’t like the trailer.
I guess women who disagree with the gender politics narrative just don’t exist or don’t have a right to have their opinion shared, eh?
In the comment section of the Crave article there are actually some women who do speak up and express how their comments were deleted by Sony, with various other people chiming in to say the same thing. Kotaku in Action has a thread about how a lot of people are noting that their comments are being deleted on the trailer’s page to give the impression that the only negative criticism is from people who didn’t want the Ghostbusters replaced with an all-female cast.
A certain Jamescrab on YouTube basically pointed out that it’s not just the all-female cast but the fact that the movie looks like it’s going to suck that makes people from all over dislike what Sony is doing…
“The dislikes are from fans of the original. Fans from all races and genders. They are uniting to say: This Movie is Going to Suck.”
Others like Ingenium noted that the movie’s trailer is not funny, writing…
“I deeply respect all of these actors, but from this trailer, the director is keeping them in boxes, and not letting their potential come out. Slapstick humor, jokes that are not funny…I love ghostbusters, but the movie better be way better than this.”
And MrRyokuji called the movie flat and uninspired, writing…
“The humor seems uninspired and falls kinda flat, the CGI use already looks excessive and the writing for Patty sounds terrible. I’ll pass, this movie looks Fantastic 4 levels of bad.”
Speaking of the Fantastic 4… that was another one where the media tried pinning the negative fan feedback on angry racists, instead of the fact that normal people with normal functioning brains could tell the movie was trash, and the reviews and box office all reflect that. Even Angry Joe had disappointment to share over the trailer.
A still sick and very annoyed AngryJoe reacts to the 1st Ghostbusters Trailer! THEY CROSSED THE STREAMS!!!! Why do the graphics look like Eddie Murphy’s Haunted House?! I wonder what the excuse will be if Ghostbusters tanks at theaters? Will the media blame it on angry misogynists keeping people from going to see the movie by locking people into their houses? Will it be neckbeard sexists blocking the entryways at theaters?
It’s a real shame that some sites have dropped so low now that they’ve completely jettisoned their credibility for a few clicks to blame bad movies on manufactured boogeymen.
