Koei Tecmo may have cut out the West from their upcoming beach volleyball romp due for release on the PS4 and PS Vita in February next year, but they’re still going to service thirsty Westerners with Dead or Alive in the form of a relaunched core fighting game experience that’s free-to-play with optional DLC upgrades… on the Xbox One.
If you read those last two words with question marks swirling around in your head like the HIV strain swirls around in Charlie Sheen’s turkey baster, you’re not alone. The move seems kind of odd but Koei Tecmo (back when they were Tecmo Koei) used to have a lot of exclusive Xbox content back when Microsoft actually cared about their image and pumping out great gaming content. The OG Xbox was at one point a home for some console specific Dead or Alive content and Koei Tecmo seems to want to revive a little bit of that jiggle-physics nostalgia for Xbox One owners.
The Dead or Alive 5: Last Round Core Fighters re-release is a free-to-play core content pack that allows gamers to play as Ayane, Hayate, Kasumi, and Ryu Hayabusa without any trial restrictions. The four characters can be accompanied by others with optional roster and costume packs that gamers can purchase, as listed by Windows Central.
- Ninja Clan 1 Costume Set – $8.69 (40% off)
- Ninja Clan 2 Costume Set – $8.69 (40% off)
- Ninja Clan 3 Costume Set – $8.69 (40% off)
- Ninja Clan Complete Set (Special Bundle for this sale only) – $23.91
- Core Fighters 30 Characters – $26.66 (45% off)
- Ninja Clan Complete Set + Core Fighters 26 Characters (Special Bundle for this sale only) – $45.98
So basically the Xbox now has two free-to-play fighters that allow gamers to piecemeal their way into building a complete game. Just like with Killer Instinct, gamers can download Dead or Alive 5: Last Round Core Fighters and then fill out the rest of the character roster and the costume set as they see fit.
Given all the hoopla over Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 not coming to the West, it wouldn’t hurt to give the game a try with the free-to-play version. And heck, who knows… you just might become a fan and genuinely feel bad about not being able to get Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 without paying an arm and a leg to have it imported.
