Deus Ex: Mankind Divided Locked At 30fps

Deus Ex: Mankind Divded game director Jean-François Dugas recently revealed that the upcoming cyberpunk sci-fi thriller will be locked at 30 frames per second. However, he didn’t specify if that was for consoles and PC or just consoles.

PSU briefly covered the news, pointing to the tweet and speculating that perhaps the game is only locked at 30fps for the PS4 and Xbox One.

However, Dugas doesn’t seem to explain the 30fps lock any further, and given that a lot of PC games have been hard-locked at 30fps this generation and last generation – which interestingly enough spawned a curator called The Framerate Police – it’s not too much for the average gamer to assume that Deus Ex: Mankind Divided might be hard-locked on PC as well. It doesn’t matter much on the home consoles because we know they rock some mid-tier equipment that requires plenty of sacrifices for games this gen.

Although, according to the PSU article the game is being ported to PC by the port-house Nixxes. So there is cogitation by the gaming community about the possibility of the title hitting 60fps on PC.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution was a solid port when it released on PC, so it’s hard to imagine that there would be any steps backward from that. What’s more is that the architecture between the PC, PS4 and Xbox One is so similar these days that it’s not hard to imagine that Nixxes should be able to make the necessary changes to get the game to hit 60fps.

Nixxes is previously known for porting over various Eidos and Crystal Dynamic titles under the Square Enix publishing label, this including porting Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition to the PS4, and porting over Hitman: Absolution and the reboot of Tomb Raider back in 2012.

Their track record seems to be solid so far and they haven’t been put under any heavy scrutiny recently for any kind of controversies, so that bodes well for the Glorious PC Master Race.

We’ll see how well Deus Ex: Mankind Divided turns out for home consoles and PC when it launches on February 23rd, 2016.

  1. I’m not sure I understand what locking the fps’ does on consoles.

    I play the witcher 3 on my PC around 45fps (it’d be 50 if I turned off the nvidia hair thing but it’s just too sexyx). It stays pretty much there even in intense action.

    I can run MGSV and Mad Max around 50-55 easy, and Deus Ex HR at 60 almost all the time.

    I don’t find it jarring if my fps goes from 50-45.

    I’m wondering then if it’s a developmental thing. Like if they know that on average their performance never dips below 30 fps, then locking it at 30fps makes it easier to design stuff?

    I’m only a CS major, and not one that cares about game design, so not sure about that.

      That’s exactly it. A game might run at the max of 42fps unlocked on home consoles, but during heavy battle scenes or intense sequences where there are a lot of draw calls or physics being rendered, the game might drop as low as 28fps.

      It’s more jarring seeing an instant drop from 42fps to 28fps as opposed to a drop from 30fps to 28fps. Locking it at 30 usually ensures that the game maintains a stable frame-rate whether there are big or small things happening on screen.

  2. Nixxes tend to port most games well, the only exception was Human Revolution Director’s Cut which was horribly optimized and looked worse than the first edition they had done. To be fair, it was a last minute port. I think this should be 60 on PC as they’re usually very good at this stuff given enough time.
