CASE Animatronics, Five Nights At Freddy’s Clone Gets Hit With DMCA Claim
C.A.S.E. Animatronics

A game called C.A.S.E. Animatronics from Russian developer Last Level has found its way onto Steam Greenlight and also managed to find itself with a DMCA takedown notice.

The game is about a horrendous crime committed that’s gone unsolved. It’s believed an animatronic was involved. Players assume the role of an officer trapped in a police station with a rampaging animatronic puppet. The gameplay allows players to hide under and in things, as well as utilize stealth to avoid detection. It’s designed to mimic Alien: Isolation but it’s mirroring the themes of Five Nights at Freddy’s. You can see the trailer for the game below.

Vote for C.A.S.E on Steam Greenlight: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=558693919 CASE is waiting for you: https://www.case-game.com CASE: Animatronics – first person stealth survival horror game. Inspired by: Outlast, Alien Isolation, Five Nights at Freddy’s. This game will make you show all creativity, maximum attention and concentration. Key Features: Look closely – use surveillance cameras to monitor the situation.

While the inspiration obviously comes from Five Nights at Freddy’s, the gameplay is actually a lot more cohesive and functional than Scott Cawthon’s horror series. Players actually move and walk around and have some form of agency when it comes to controlling the character, outside of simply monitoring cameras and closing doors.

The Unity-powered title has received some positive feedback on Greenlight but it’s also received plenty of criticism for being a “rip off” of Five Nights at Freddy’s. The similarities are completely undeniable, but at the same time the gameplay actually looks pretty good in C.A.S.E. Animatronics.

However, a lot of people have been reporting the entry as a clone of Scott Cawthon’s popular series. Shortly after appearing on Greenlight the game now has a notice at the top stating that it has a DMCA file claim on the product.

Usually Valve is quick to remove games that are direct copyright violations of other games. It’s one of the few rules enforced on Steam Greenlight. However, in this case I can’t actually see any copyright infringement going on unless the studio actually stole some assets from another game or perhaps used assets from the Unity asset store without permission.

As of right now I did reach out to the developers at Last Level regarding who sent the DMCA claim and whether or not it will affect the production of their title. For now you can vote up or vote down C.A.S.E. Animatronics on the official Greenlight page or you can learn more by visiting the official website.

I don’t really see the copyright infringement here either, but this screen looks like the Five Nights at Freddy’s camera/map system. I’m not sure if that’s the cause of DMCA alone, or if it had to do with having killer animatronics also.

Maybe I don’t see copyright infringement because I’m used to “clone” games, like Doom clones, GTA clones, etc. that look and play similar to the real thing, but with slight deviations.

This YouTube comment makes a good point.

    • Yeah… at first I was thinking it was a rip-off but the more I saw and the more gameplay that was showcased I realized it was just derivative but still its own thing as far as gameplay and mechanics are concerned.

I would like to see the DMCA on this game get taken down and the game released on Steam and elsewhere. There is room enough for FNAF clones and Night Trap clones.
