Adam Jensen is the next step in human evolution. In Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, he is now an experienced covert operative, forced to operate in a world that has grown to despise his kind. Armed with a new arsenal of state-of-the-art weapons and augmentations, he must choose the right approach, along with who to trust, in order to unravel a vast worldwide conspiracy.

For those kind of lost on the plot and what some of the talking points are that are addressed in the trailer, the YouTube description makes it a bit more coherent for newcomers, explaining…

Putting on the brakes, shifting in reverse and driving backwards for just a little bit… part of the reason why the world has grown to despise mechanoids is because of what happened in Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Jensen was a test tube baby that was genetically designed to work with advanced cybernatic augmentations. Most of everyone else who had augments installed had their bodies rejecting the augments, resulting in them having to take a drug to allow their body to “accept” the augmentations.

The Illuminati wanted to advance the human race by using Jensen as a stepping stone to push humanity from mere mortals into biomechanical gods. Things didn’t go as planned and there was a huge breakdown in augmented technology, resulting in a lot of people with augments turning into ravenous killers.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided‘s story picks up where cis-humans are no longer trusting of their biomechanically enhanced counterparts, resulting in a mechanical apartheid.

Eidos Montreal continues the story of Jensen attempting to find the Illuminati behind the original plan that was enacted in Human Revolution, while also dealing with a rising rebel group attempting to fight back against their oppressors. Expect a lot of layers and nuance when the game launches on February 23rd for the Xbox One, PS4 and PC.
