Bethesda and Machine Games announced that a prequel to Wolfenstein: The New Order is on the way called Wolfenstein: The Old Blood. The game features B.J. Blazkowicz in his original mission to invade Castle Wolfenstein and kill all the Nazis scum he can find. It’s essentially a remake of the original id Software shooter, Wolfenstein 3D.
There’s a trailer that helps put this all into perspective, and as explained in the official description by Bethesda Softworks…
“Part one of Wolfenstein: The Old Blood – Rudi Jäger and the Den of Wolves — pits BJ Blazkowicz against a maniacal prison warden as he breaks into Castle Wolfenstein in an attempt to steal the coordinates to General Deathshead’s compound. In part two – The Dark Secrets of Helga Von Schabbs – our hero’s search for the coordinates leads him to the city of Wulfburg where an obsessed Nazi archaeologist is exhuming mysterious artifacts that threaten to unleash a dark and ancient power.”
That also kind of sounds like the previous reboot of Wolfenstein that landed on PCs and consoles in the mid-2000s. Man, I kind of hated that one. It was aimless and repetitive and couldn’t seem to figure out if it was Call of Duty or Doom. Anyway, you can check out the official gameplay and announcement trailer for the new game below.
The newest pre-sequel seems to take a lot of what made Wolfenstein: The New Order popular and then amp it up a notch. Even more over-the-top weapons, new bad guys to kill and new ways to kill them.
The pipe-knife is especially interesting and the accompanying deaths from employing it are fairly entertaining.
Now if you’re worried about price and getting ripped off like Titanfall or The Order 1886, take note that Bethesda Softworks understands the value of content, which is why Wolfenstein: The Old Blood is launching on May 5th for the Xbox One, PS4 and PC for only $19.99. Not bad, Bethesda… not bad.
