One of the most popular games you’ve probably never heard of is a free-to-play multiplayer, zombie-survival game that’s similar to Minecraft and DayZ called Unturned. The game is designed by a certain Nelson Sexton and published by Smartly Dressed Games. The game was recently updated to include a beta preview branch that enables full Steam Workshop support for easy modding.
Update 220.127.116.11 was recently released, featuring some tweaks and fixes, such as a nasty crashing bug when “messing with Workshop folders”. Sexton advises people to continue to not mess with Workshop folders.
Over on the announcement page, Sexton writes…
“Added Workshop support for Maps. Keep in mind that auto-downloading when joining servers and asset dependencies are not yet implemented.
“ Added Workshop support for “Objects” which covers custom models, items, vehicles, effects and resources. “
Additional miscellaneous mods include language support, screenshots and even custom movie trailers and screengrabs.
As pointed out in a video by YouTuber MeLikeBigBoom, this will make it way easier to modify maps, models, weapons and characters without going through the hassle of messing with folders and install directories. Check out his six minute video below.
Sexton also has instant updates enabled for Workshop mods, so if a modder updates a mod and changes a few things around it will automatically update the user’s files. This is kind of a double-edged sword because when Magenta did that for some of those really, really, really awesome Garry’s Mod add-ons, updating all of the folders to remove the mods from Workshop. It wiped out everyone’s online mods that were made by Magenta. The only way to play with them again was to go to the native download folder and mess with the Steam Workshop files.
If you want to get in on the beta for 18.104.22.168 to play around with the Workshop mods, you’ll need to join the beta program for Unturned. This can easily be achieved by going to the game’s properties in your game library and opting to partake in the preview branch by selecting it from the beta tab. Sexton also adds further instructions on getting in, writing…
If you’re interested in testing out this patch head on over to the Preview branch! You can gain access using the secret passcode “OPERATIONMAPLELEAF” in the Betas tab.
Anyway, Unturned is “turning up the heat” on modding and community interaction, making it easier than ever before. The free-to-play title is growing and expanding almost like Roblox. You can learn more about Unturned by paying a visit to the game’s official Steam page.
