Elder Scrolls Online Targeting 1080p, 30fps For Xbox One, PS4

If you were hoping for a 1080p, 60fps experience for Zenimax Online’s Elder Scrolls Online MMORPG on the home consoles, think a little lower, my friend. Worlds Factory asked a few questions during a Reddit AMA regarding the performance specs of ESO for the eighth-gen consoles.

Various key staff from the development team popped on to Reddit to answer some questions about the game, and when the resolution and frame-rate popped into the picture, here’s what they had to say…

For your first question, the targets are 30 fps and 1080p resolution for both platforms.

The team was also asked about UI navigation for the PC – would PC gamers be able to use a controller to navigate through the menus? Well, they did answer that question…

“For your second question, we’re definitely looking to add controller support to the PC game (including the same UI as console), but that won’t be available until after console launch.”

So PC gamers are only going to benefit from extra, native controller options when console gamers get the title. Typical. Almost makes it seem like Zenimax are treating PC gamers like the Gloriouc PC Second-Tier Race.

But circling back around to the resolution and frame-rate specs… I think it’s interesting that they would target 1080p. I imagine a lot of people would be disappointed if the Xbox One failed to deliver on that front, given that a lot of games don’t quite make the 1080 cut. Other games have been known to use variable resolution and frame-rates, like Wolfenstein: The New Order. 1080p and 60fps only seems to make the appearance on rare occasions and for games that aren’t very graphically demanding.

1080p and 30fps seems to be the safe bet this gen, and it looks like APB: Reloaded might even end up in a similar boat if I had to take a guess at targeted specs. Right now, we do know that APB: Reloaded is playable on the PS4, but the actual specs haven’t been made public yet.

As for Elder Scrolls Online for the home consoles… the game is scheduled to launch on June 9th, during the hectic month of E3.

The team will also cull back on the month-to-month subscription plan and replace it with a buy-it-once model that’s bound to pull in a more stable user-base.

I expected this from day one. Although, I’m fairly impressed with the fact that they’re confident enough to run the game at 1080p on these consoles. But, I called it awhile ago. “It” being the fact that the game isn’t going to run at 60fps on consoles.
