Pier Solar HD is a love letter to the 16-bit JRPG era, paying homage in particular to the Sega Genesis role-playing genre. The HD remix of the game sports cleaned up sprites and high definition audio. The game has recently launched for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PC and the Ouya. Why the Ouya before the Wii U? I have no idea, but it supposedly had something to do with a certification hiccup.
Hardcore Gamer caught wind of the news and laid out the basic feature list for the game, which includes 50 hours of gameplay (including the main and side-quests), mini-games, six different languages, 800 NPCs to encounter and more than 300 locations to visit.
You can see the game in action with the launch trailer below.
Pier Solar is a love letter to the rich, imaginative 16-bit RPGs of a bygone era. It was originally designed and developed for the SEGA Mega Drive & SEGA Genesis. Pier Solar Features a Massive world to explore with 50+ hours of gameplay, over 300 locations, nearly 500 unique treasure chests, over 800 NPCs, epic battle tactics, an original soundtrack, mini games and many more surprises!
I’m here to tell you, WaterMelon really went out of their way to make one of the most nostalgia-driven games I’ve seen since the last sprite-based, isometric indie game that was released on home consoles and PC.
I know some people are always complaining about the indie devs relying on sprite-based games and whatnot, but I’m digging what WaterMelon has done with Pier Solar. It looks like the sort of game where you play it to have fun and play it to enjoy it. It’s not one of those eight-hour, weekend-dives that you start and finish and then wonder where the rest of it is… which was common for most AAA games during seventh gen (though expect that trend to continue throughout the eighth gen, too).
I haven’t seen much of the combat in the director’s cut of the game but it’s mentioned that it’s ripe and nurtured with counter-attacks, special strategies and in-depth moves to help turn the tide of the battle.
