So by now the news must have set in nice and thick about Crytek’s current situation with two of their major studios. Oh, you didn’t know? Well the company who made some of the most beautifully generic first-person shooters shutdown their internal studios in the U.S., and in the U.K, as noted in a report on Polygon. However, amidst the rubble and beneath the turmoil, away from the dust and through the thicket of war-weary smoke, one lone project still stands tall through Crytek’s financial fallout… TimeSplitters Rewind.
I kid you not, the project is still going alive and well. Last year when I interviewed the project lead about the whole thing we knew that they were aiming to make some headway on PC and PS4 first, with the Xbox One potentially coming down the pipeline.
Given the recent shakeup at Crytek, I was definitely curious about the state of TimeSplitters Rewind. Would still be in the works? Would it be canned? Is Crytek getting rid of the IP? What’s going on?
Well, I recently reached out to Michael Hubicka, the man heading up TimeSplitters Rewind – a sort of side-project that a few developers under the Crytek UK banner were helping out with after the company sucked up the IP along with the former design studio known as Free Radical – and he let me in on what’s what with the project after Crytek shutdown their U.K., studio saying…
“We are still moving forward. We will be announcing a major change soon.” […]
Believe it or not, that’s not even the most exciting bit of news regarding the project, but unfortunately it’s news I can’t spill… yet.
Hubicka still has some major announcements regarding the project that will likely help shape the excitement moving forward.
The big question I have, of course, is how long will it be before we get our hands on TimeSplitters Rewind?
For those of you who don’t know, this was more of a labor-of-love project that was being made in the spare time of some members from Free Radical. They took on the painstaking task of having to recreate all the assets from the first three TimeSplitters titles.
They had already managed to get the game up and running on some of the maps, and even showcased how the gameplay would work. In fact, there’s an alpha video of the game’s current work-in-progress state that you can view below.
TimeSplitters: Rewind – Compound Showcase (WIP)
Keep in mind that this is all still very much a “Work In Progress”, and anything can change, and probably will. I thought it was pretty finished, at least enough to showcase. Things that will most likely change when you see it next time are some of the solids being swapped out for “High Poly” models.
Work is progressing slowly on the project since it’s not funded in the traditional sense and is mostly a fan project with the blessings from the IP holder. Nevertheless, things are moving along at a perfectionist’s pace.
I can’t wait to update you all about the really big news that Michael and the gang have to share about TimeSplitters Rewind… soon. Stay tuned.
