Benzoyl Peroxide-A review

Nobody enjoys having less than perfect skin, and that includes me. Like most people out there, once I hit puberty, all hell broke loose and I found myself battling acne from that point on for what felt like forever. My mother, who has near flawless skin, assured me not to stress out over it because it would soon clear on its own. She told me that she went through the same phase, only hers was worse, as it was cystic acne. However, 21 came and went and many years later, I was still battling acne, with no sign of it going away!

Meantime, my skin was progressively getting worse and worse because I was left with unsightly acne marks as well as existent spots. People would annoy me and say don’t squeeze them, don’t touch your face, drink a lot of water, don’t eat crisps, sweets and chocolate…. on and on it went! This mainly from people with near perfect skin, who never suffered with pimples! I remember, one of my cousins, who happens to have the most gorgeous skin once saying to me, “why don’t you sort your face out?!” ….I just thought, wow, charming!

Anyway, over the years, I tried everything under the sun, in vain. You name it, I’ve probably tried it! I went through dermatologists, bought both cheap and expensive products, in vain. I took all manner of skin supplements, in a bid to cleanse myself from within. Nothing helped. I was well and truly at the end of my tether, when I happened upon a skin care discussion thread where everyone was talking about Benzoyl Peroxide being a good acne remedy.

I set about doing further research and finding more reviews, and I must say I was intrigued! Luckily, I was able to find it in a local Boots pharmacy, and for very cheap too. The brand I found was Panoxyl, which came in a face wash and gel set for £10. It came in 3%, 5% and 10% strengths. I have oily skin, which can handle most products, so I decided to go in at the highest strength.

What It Promises To Do

  • Cleans and unclogs pores
  • Clears existent acne blemishes and helps prevent new ones forming
  • Promotes exfoliation of dead skin cells
  • Helps break the cycle that keeps bringing acne back
  • Reduces acne-causing bacteria by drying and peeling skin

My Verdict

I was amazed! Within about two weeks of using PanOxyl foaming face wash and gel, my face was showing the promise of healing I’d never ever seen before with any other product! I would say my face was about 95% clear, with no sign of new spots forming! I just couldn’t believe it!

The product is easy to use, but I would urge people to start on the lowest strength because I reckon the product works in part due to its drying element. It is so drying on skin, some may even see flaky patches on their face. Also, you have to be careful when you apply it, because it can have a bleaching effect on clothes and bedding! That’s how strong it is.

All in all, this is what I noticed with my skin with continued use of PanOxyl products:

  • Much less greasy skin, which may mean much dryer skin for some
  • Much smaller pores
  • Make up going on my face and blending better
  • A lot fewer acne breakouts
  • Some of my dark marks from acne fading

Warning:

This product may make your skin a lot more sensitive to the sun, so it’s imperative to protect your skin by wearing sunscreen at all times. You need to also avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, and whenever you’re out and about, also wear protective clothing. If you’re a fan of fake tan, you are best off skipping going on tanning beds while using this product, too. Failure to do so may undo all the hard work you put in to reverse all the damage on your skin. Remember that your skin will be sensitive and your newly acquired fresh skin may still be fragile.

To this day, I still swear by this product. It’s a shame that where I now live, I can only get it at 5% strength, which sometimes takes a while to work on my skin. Do you suffer terrible bouts of unsightly acne? Give benzoyl Peroxide a try, you may just be pleasantly surprised. It worked for me, and still does!
