Memorable Lines in Songs: Whitney Houston (since 1990)

Whitney Houston maintained her popularity in 1990s and even reached success in 2000s despite her struggles. It was just sad that music has lost its one of the most beautiful voices (pertaining to Houston) in early 2012.

All The Man that I Need
” I used to cry myself to sleep at night
But that was all before he came”
The girl used to be lonely until the man came who filled and completed her life.

Miracle
” How could I let go of a miracle¬†
Nothing could ever take its place”
This woman may have let go of something like a gift. But she let it all away and she is in regrets for what she’s done.

I Will Always Love You
” And I wish to you joy and happiness
But above all this, I wish you love”
It’s like a note for someone you will always love before you will depart with that person. You hope happiness for that person and find the one who will love him or her.

I Have Nothing
” Don’t make me close one more door
I don’t want to hurt anymore”
The person you love is all that you have. When he/she leaves, you will have nothing left which will surely hurt deep.

Exhale (Shoop Shoop)
” Sometimes you’ll laugh, sometimes you’ll cry
Life never tells us, the when’s or why’s
But when you’ve got friends, to wish you well”
It was a song about friendship, by which not everything is about happiness. There can be sad moments, and friends are always there to comfort.

I Believe in You and Me
” I believe that love will never end
And like the river finds the sea”
The woman believes the love she and his man has will never end. It’ all about believing in love.

It’s Not Right But It’s Okay
” Pack your bags up and leave
And don’t you dare come running back to me”
The woman is sending the guy away as she found out that he is cheating. It shows her strength despite being cheated.

My Love is Your Love
” It would take an eternity to break us
And the chains of Amistad couldn’t hold us”
It’s about in a love that was unbreakable no matter what happen. Such love cannoy be taken away.

Memorable Lines in Songs: Whitney Houston (1980s)

The late Whitney Houston was known for a powerful and soulful voice. With such talent, she became one of the most popular female artists ever. Her songs were primarily about love and even heartbreaks. Here are the memorable lines in her songs from 1980s. It includes songs not originally hers because such songs became more popular when she sang it.

Saving All My Love for You
” You’ve got your family and they need you there
Though I’ve tried to resist being last on your list”
The lady is in love with a man who has a family. It seems the lady is just a mistress. But the lady is still giving her love for the commited man. Hhmmm, sounds like infidelity is going on in this song.

How Will I Know?
” How will I know if he’s thinking of me
I try to phone but I’m too shy”
The lady likes the guy so much but she can’t say directly to him if he likes him too.

The Greatest Love of All
” Learning to love yourself
It is the greatest love of all”
You can succeed if you will love yourself, which means being yourself and not everybody else. This song was one of the biggest ballads of ’80s

I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)
” Yeah, I wanna dance with somebody
With somebody who loves me”
It is very clear in the lyrics that she wants to dance with somebody who loves her. So it means she will not dance with just anybody else. This song was Whitney’s biggest hit in the 1980s.

Didn’t We Almost Have it All
“Didn’t we almost have it all
When love was all we had worth giving?”
It sounds like love is just so perfect like it will never end but it eventually failed. This is one of the best heartbreak songs of 1980s.

So Emotional
” I’ve been hearing your heartbeat inside of me
I keep your photo right beside my bed”
The girl likes this certain guy and she’s dreaming and fantasizing with that guy.

Where Do Broken Hearts Go?
“Since that cold November day…
We said we needed space
But all we found was an empty place”
The girl and the guy took their time off away from each other, but led to separation. Still they care for each other.

One Moment in Time
” You’re a winner for a lifetime
If you seize that one moment in time
Make it shine”
It is inspiring everyone to reach their dreams. In the end, you will reach your dreams and shine all over.

Recap: Your Face Sounds Familiar Season 2 (December 5, 2015)

The competition is going intense likewise the performances is getting harder for the celebrity impersonators. Tonight has been an interesting episode. When I first heard about the celebs doing a duet with themselves, I thought they will perform like doble-kara (double face). But when I watched all the performances tonight, I was in awe. I think the other artist was first recorded while the other artist they impersonated was the main one.

To start the show, Melai Cantiveros came back as Miley Cyrus, the impersonation that had her won during the first season.

Here are the performances of the celebrity impersonators:

KZ Tandingan as Liza Minelli and Luciano Pavarotti
“New York, New York”
The performance was amazing. She sang very well as Liza but we cannot expect a perfect Pavarotti as she was female. As Liza, she is very comfortable and enjoyed the performance. Her vocals as Liza is even perfect.

Michael Pangilinan as Sam Smith and John Legend
“Lay Me Down”
Among all the performances tonight, this is, for me, is the perfect performance. I mean his voice as Sam Smith and John Legend is perfect. No more words to say about the performance.

Denise Laurel as Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett
“The Lady is a Tramp”
Denise became a jazz singer and she did it perfectly as Lady Gaga. While the Tony Bennett performance is very impressive like how she can sound like that. I saw no pressure in this performance and Denise looked relaxed.

Kakai Bautista as Whitney Houston and Cissy Houston
“I Knew Him So Well”
Kakai did mother and daughter duet as Whitney and Cissy Houston. This can be a difficult performance since it is an emotional song but she did it well. In fact, she sang even better as Cissy.

Kean Cipriano as Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder
“Ebony and Ivory”
I never thought Kean can pull the impersonation so well. Though there are flaws as Stevie Wonder but Paul McCartney was perfect from the looks to his vocals.

Admittedly, it is the episode which I enjoyed all of the performances. Of course, the set-up and idea is good but all of the performers did very well. Even myself, I find it hard to rank them (which will surely make it difficult for the judges to rank them too) but I made the ranking below based on every performances effect on me.
1. Michael Pangilinan
2. Denise Laurel
3. KZ Tandingan
4. Kakai Bautista
5. Kean Cipriano

Since it is the last performances from the celebrities, it is becoming more interesting. With three more performers tomorrow, the top 4 will be announced tomorrow by which next week will be the finale.

Your Face Sounds Familiar Season 2 airs every Saturday and Sunday night on ABS-CBN 2.

Top R&B Songs 1995-1999

During the second half of 1990s, R&B is slowly chnaging its landscape to more upbeat from the slow jams R&B lovers used to love. Here are the 15 R&B songs I listed that made impact during this era.

Going back to 1995, I used to hear this hip-hop R&B hit on radio and on MTV. It was very popular then as it became Montell’s signatue song.

The song was also popular as it waa used for a clothing/denim brand. It was very huge then and that one of Shaggy’s biggest hit ever.

Mariah Carey- Fantasy
This is one of the earliest rap-sung collaboration and remix hit, Mariah is slowly going to deeper R&B sound and this track was a chart-topper.

Toni Braxton- Un-break My Heart
Toni Braxton came out with another heartbreaking song which was one of the biggest songs of 1997. The song also was one of her best vocalled song.

R. Kelly- I Believe I Can Fly
This could have been R.Kelly’s most notable song with its nice R&B ballad melodies. It is also inspirational for many as it was used as winning piece for some singing competition contestants.

Usher- You Make Me Wanna
This has been one Usher’s earlier hits and the song was too tender and smooth with some guutar riffs on it.

Puff Daddy ft. Faith Evans & 112- I’ll Be Missing You
The song’s chorus was interpolated from The Police’s hit and helped the song become a big seller. It is also a tribute for Notorious B.I.G.

Boyz II Men- A Song for Mama
This is one of my favorite R&B hit during the period it was released as I dedicate it to my mother. It settled to a top ten position then.

K-Ci and Jojo- All My Life
This is a sweet song by a guy for a lady and one of the most favorited love songs in 1998. It went on to become a number one song for the duo.

Brandy and Monica- The Boy is Mine
Brandy and Monica was considered rivals and they fought for the love of a man via this song which was a worldwide smash.

TLC- No Scrubs
After taking a long break, TLC broke the chart with this comeback by which the girls doesn’t want a guy who has nothing.

Female superstars who started in 1980s-1990s and their underwhelming albums

There are overwhelming number of female stars in music industry. If you are going to compare the number of male and female singers, female outnumbered male singers. Clearly enough, competition of female singers are very tight.

Many female singers who had been huge about 2-3 decades ago tries hard to maintain their relevance. However, due to some factors, they end up struggling to still sell millions in some of their records. Even the best sellers sometimes fail. Evidence were those artists listed below with their last albums which sold underwhelmingly:

Mariah Carey
Mariah maintained her success during the entire 1990s. Underwhelming selling albuns is not new for her though when her 2001 album “Glitter” became her lowest peaking studio album and her 2002 album “Charmbracelet” bombed both in sales and critical responses. She got her redemption in 2005 through “Emancipation of Mimi” as it became her biggest album of 2000s. Her album “Memoirs of Imperfect Angel” only reached #3 and failed platinum status. Last year, her comeback album “Me. I Am Mariah… The Elusive Chanteuse” may have peaked at high number 3 position but became her least successful album and considered a flop album by many.

Whitney Houston
She made it big with her first 2 albums in the ’80s and made it big with her soundtrack albums in the ’90s. Her first studio album after a string of 3 soundtrack albums, “My Love is Your Love” started slower but caught up after few months and became lustrous. Her last albums “Just Whitney” and “I Look to You” may have sold millions but not a testament of a huge comeback.

Celine Dion
Celine’s breakthrough came through “Color of My Love” and followed by more successful albums “Falling into You” and 1997’s “Let’s Talk About Love” which made her an A-list singer. Her success continued but never replicated with her last four albums. Her recent “Loved Me Back to Life” debuted at number 2 on Billboard 200 but with less sales compared to her previous.

Madonna
Madonna’s albums has always been huge. She may had lows but can make a huge comeback. In 1990s, her highly sexual LP “Erotica” was met with low sales compared to its predecessors and followed by underrated “Bedtime Stories”. She made huge comeback with “Ray of Light” and “Music”. Her “American Life” album was criticized and affected her sales despite a huge start. She came back with record setter “Confessions on a Dance Floor”. Her recent release “Rebel Heart” may have started at number 2 in US and number 1 in many countries but the reception in sales is not the usual she received.

Janet Jackson
After 5 chart-topping and multi-million selling album during 1980s until early 2000s, Janet released her album “Damita Jo” which was the start of her low sales and affected her 2 succeeding albums despite high position in ranks. That was due to wardrobe malfunction incident which entirely affected her career. Blacklisting from MTV is a huge part of her downfall. Recently, she released her independent record “Unbreakable” which surprisingly started at number 1. The sales was considerably huge since albums sales are declining.

Reinvention & Transformation of Female Artists from 1980s and 1990s

Female artists do most of reinvention to themselves. Many of then succeeded, though some of them was received modestly. Involving in controversial changes may be a bad publicity but it is still a publicity that can contribute to record sales surge. It helped many artists propel their careers spanning decades. Take a look at these artists below:

Madonna- She is labeled as “Queen of Reinvention” after transforming a number of times, yet, she was still well-received in a span of more than 3 decades in the industry. Those who lived from the 1980s, they saw how her looks has evolved which may be more than 10 times based on her music videos. From a wholesome lady on her self-titled debut, she went more sexual and controversial with “Like a Virgin” and even shocked many with “Like a Prayer”. At the wake of 1990s, she went sassy and fashionista through “Vogue”. The most controversial era happened with her “Erotica” album with its sexual themes. However, many gave good reviews of it. We heard her evolve to dance music in this song. She toned down in her compilation release “Something to Remember” as a warm up for musical film and album “Evita”. Her big comeback came through the album which was generally well-received “Ray of Light” with its electronic sounds which continued through “Music”. At this time, she left her sexual image. She proved her reign as “Queen of the Dance Floor” through “Confessions on the Dance Floor”. We heard her in EDM recently with “Rebel Heart”.

Whitney Houston- She is one of the most successful divas because of her big voice. Whitney often has songs intended to motivate people and friendship songs. Most of her songs were ballad as heard in her first 3 albums. But she also had danceable hits with the likes of “I Wanna Dance with Somebody”. She turned into a relevant actress with the success of the blockbuster film and its soundtrack which is the biggest selling from a film ever, “The Bodyguard”. The film was followed by two more films and soundtracks. Her first studio album after 8 years of soundtrack came out with the album “My Love is Your Love”. In this album, her music sounds more soulful and R&B and lower vocal register until her last album “I Look to You”.

Janet Jackson- Her success finally came after 2 less successful albums via “Control”. She was one of the female best dancers and singer at the same time. Her music expands to different topics that made her a role model. However, with the release of “janet.”, she took a more sexual role. From a musculine choreography or “Rhythm Nation” to sexier moves on this album. During the second half of 1990s, her “Velvet Rope” album was on a darker mode. Her come back in 2000s just shown her as an icon. Unfortunately, a nip slip incide in 2004 was the start of her career to diminish. But she’s still one of the biggest female pop stars ever.

Mariah Carey- At the start of the 1990, saw the rise of one of the biggest stars ever. Mariah Carey scored her first number one among her numerous chart-toppers, was know to be balladeer with wholesome image. In 1997, the sexual Mariah Carey was seen with her music reinvented to more R&B. Her music declined not just with its sales but also quality through “Glitter” but through “Emancipation of Mimi”, she flourished due to its new sound which is different from her usual ballads. Since 2005, she maintained that sound.

Song Reviews: Nick Jonas, Natalie La Rose, Ed Sheeran

Nick Jonas – Chains

After the huge hit “Jealous”, which became Nick’s breakthrough solo single after hitting the top 10 in many countries including major markets, US and UK, Nick released “Chains” as his second hit and was another US hit. “Chains” is a R&B song at mid-tempo with synths and drum beats. The song was epic and I never imagined he can pull such a song. It may be lyrically about in a difficult relation but it has its seducing way of pulling listeners to the song. He also even sounded a better vocalist than his brother Joe Jonas, who has been the main vocalist of their band. It also broke the one-hit wonder status for having two consecutive hits.

Rating: 8.5 of 10

Natalie La Rose – Somebody (ft. Jeremih)

She’s one of the breakout artists for 2015 after her first ever single “Somebody” broke the US top 10 and a higher peak in UK at number 2. The song is an R&B pop song and showed her dance move in the music video. It can also remind you of Whitney Houston in the music video since it pays homage to her apart from its interpolation of Houston’s big dance hit “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” back in the 1980s. The song’s catchy and can make you move with its R&B beats. It was a rare R&B sound now from what we here on the radio recently.

Rating: 8 of 10

Ed Sheeran – Photograph

After making everybody fall in love with “Thinking Out Loud”, Ed went more sentimental with this song “Photograph”. It started with guitar and then lyrics that’s touching and a melody and music video that will make you reminisce. The song has become a US top ten hit, his 3rd from sophomore effort “X” though a top ten hit in his hometown UK after a higher peaking “Bloodstream”.
