Groups With Number 1 Albums is US and UK: Black Eyed Peas / S Club 7 / Ace of Base / Steps / The Fugees

Black Eyed Peas
United States- Black Eyed Peas had 3 multiplatinum albums, along with another platinum album. But with those albums, they only had 1 to manage the top spot which is “The E.N.D.”. Nevertheless, “Monkey Business” has been their biggest seller.
United Kingdom- Black Eyed Peas never scored a number 1 album in United Kingdom. However, all of their 4 albums went platinum and multi-platinum. “Elephunk” was their most successful there.

S Club 7
United States- S Club 7’s success in United States is limited but scored 2 albums to chart.
United Kingdom- S Club 7 did well in United Kingdom where they scored 3 top 3 albums. One of these albums, which is “7”, went to number 1. It even went 4x platinum there, as reported by BPI.

Ace of Base
United States- Ace of Base became very successful in the US when they managed to release their album “The Sign”. It went 9x platinum after reaching number 1 in Billboard albums.
United Kingdom- Ace of Base had been successful in the country with “Happy Nation” album which reached number 1. The album was called “The Sign” in the US. They had subsequent releases but weren’t that successful.

Steps
United States- Steps never had a number 1 album but they had a top 80 album charted.
United Kingdom- Steps scored 3 consecutive top 5 albums in UK. All these¬† 3 went multi-platinums, with “Steptacular” as their number 1 album. “Step One”- their first album- went 5x platinum by BPI.

The Fugees
United States- The Fugees had short-lived career but at least they had achieved a milestone. Their album “The Score” went to number 1 and certified by RIAA with 6x platinum. Another album of ¬†them failed to chart.
United Kingdom- The Fugees failed to reach number 1 but at least reached number 2 with “The Score”. The album was 5x platinum certified. They had other album which charted at low position and was not widely released.

Albums that are more successful than its singles (1995-1999)

Part of being a successful recording artist and becoming an A-lister is when their albums sells millions and singles becoming big hits os music charts. However, there are albums from music artists who do sell a lot of albums but their singles from those albums are not radio hits. In 1995 to 1999, here are the notable albums which its singles did not match its success.

Alanis Morissette- Jagged Little Pill
This breakthrough album by Alanis Morissette was very successful and was one of the biggest selling albums which reached more than 30 million in sales. But none of the album’s singles went to number one either in US and UK. In Asia, their singles were successful though. Still, her singles did not match the success of the album

Oasis- (What’s the Story?) Morning Glory
Oasis became one of UK’s precious talents after this album becam extremely successful. The album was believed to have sold 20 million copies. However, only “Wonderwall” and “Don’t Look Back in Anger” made impact as singles internationally. In their hometown, UK, their singles did well though.

The Fugees- The Score
The Fugees became very popular then with this critically acclaimed album. The record became multiplatinum in 1996 and one of the biggest sellers that year. But the only single which made real impact was worldwide was “Killing Me Softly”. But in UK, their singles did very well.

Ricky Martin- Vuelve
Former Menudo member Ricky Martin achieved worldwide solo success through his album “Vuelve”. The album did very well and according to estimates, it has sold 8 million copies. However, the only single which gained success from the album was “The Cup of Life”.

Red Hot Chilli Peppers- Californication
Red Hot Chilli Peppers has been one of the biggest bands of the 1990s. But they achieved huge success with their comeback in 1999 through “Californication”. While no singles from this highly successful album ever made the top 10 in UK and most countries, but “Scar Tissue” went to US top 10.

The Offspring- Americana
In 1999, The Offspring went back with this album “Americana” which became known for their single “Pretty Fly ( For a White Guy)”. The album went multiplatinum with sales exceeded 10 million copies but only two singles from the album charted well. In the US, no singles even hit the top 50 despite the album performed well there.

Lauryn Hill- The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill
The success of this debut album from Lauryn Hill was preceded by her big number 1 hit “Doo Wop (That Thing)”. The album went straight to the top going multiplatinum in a number of countries. But no other singles followed the debut single’s success.

Artists With Successful Debut 1995-1999

For many music artists, starting or entering the music industry is very difficult to make a good shot. There were other artists who did very well with their first single but turned out as one-hit wonder. However, there were artists who did very well with this debut single and their album did well too.

Since 1995, there were some artists which did very well with their first albums. Some had maintained their success but not everyone did well in their succeeding releases. Most in the list below were pop artists, do there were those with rock and R&B sound. Pop music just had a major change with bubblegum pop rose to popularity.

Alanis Morissette
Alanis may already had releases back then in her own country, her first album internationally became the biggest selling album by a newcomer. Based on estimates listed in Wikipedia, her debut album “Jagged Little Pill” became a record setter as it sold about 33 million. Her second album went #1 too but due to changes in music landscaped, it sold below than predecessor.

The Fugees
The Fugees is leading the hip-hop scene in 1996 via “The Score” album. It was multi-platinum worldwide when it became one of the biggest sellers in 1996, which was also assisted by their successful cover of “Killing Me Softly”. They haven’t released a follow-up after that.

Spice Girls
Spice Girls led the music scene during this era because of their contribution not just through record sales but also in pop culture. Their debut album “Spice” was believed with sales of 30 million (according to Wikipedia) scored 4 UK number 1s and 3 US top 5s. Their second album was very successful as well, though, it became their last studio album when Geri Halliwell departed from the group.

Hanson
The Hanson brothers priorly released independent albums but success came in 1997 when their first mainstream album “Middle of Nowhere” went multi-platinum by which its success was attributed to the stellar hit “Mmmbop”. Despite their success, no other albums from them became as successful.

Savage Garden
The Australian duo scored success with debut single “I Want You”, however, bigger succeed came with the ballad “Truly, Madly, Deeply” when it settled to the top. The album then caught up in sales and became one of the top sellers of 1998.

Aqua
The cartoonish songs and videos of Danish pop group Aqua made them very popular. Apart from “Barbie Girl” which had estimated 8 million in sales helped their first LP “Aquarium” go multi-platinum worldwide. They also had multiple hit songs for the album. However, their second album was just moderately successful.

All Saints
The four-piece British girl group was said to be the rival of Spice Girls, though, success of the Spices was never matched by All Saints. Still, they became successful with their self-titled album which went multi-platinum in UK and Europe. It received a platinum award from RIAA which helped the album’s status after the hit “Never Ever”. Their second album had limited success.

Natalie Imbruglia
Natalie Imbruglia became a household name with her global smash “Torn”. Her album “Left of the Middle” became as successful with platinum and multi-platinum successes elsewhere. It took several years for her to release her second album which was less successful.

Lauryn Hill
Despite the success of The Fugees, the members of the group pursued solo careers like Lauryn Hill did. Her debut album ” The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill had multi-million sales which was preceded by her successful hip-hop jam “(Doo Wop) That Thing”. She never released a studio album after that.

Britney Spears
It was 1999 when young female pop artists became popular which was first led by Britney Spears. Her song “…Baby One More Time” was extremely popular as well her album with the same title. The album estimatedly sold 30 million as claimed according to Wikipedia. She became a legend with her prolonged success and her succeeding albums went multi-platinum and had multiple number 1 albums.

Christina Aguilera
Coming from the same genre with Spears when she released her first album, Christina Aguilera was believed as Spears’ closest competitor. Christina never failed as her debut single went to number one worldwide. Her self titled album, according to the number of sales in her website, had sold 17 million which is a hefty amount of records. She had successful album right after too.

Jennifer Lopez
Jennifer Lopez became famous with her single “If You Had My Love” which spent several weeks at number 1. Her album “On the Six” became multi-platinum. She remained successful with all her other albums.

Globally Successful Albums of Groups with Male and Female Members since 1990

Along with success of their singles, groups with male and female members had successful albums too. Many of them may not have had sustainable success, in this list, Black Eyed Peas is the most successful scoring several successful albums. The success of the album includes its sales and singles’ success.

Ace of Base- Happy Nation / The Sign
According to Wikipedia, this album exceeded an estimated sales of 25 million. This is surely the most successful album in this list as it also scored 3 official hit singles (entering the top 10 in major charts) namely “The Sign”, “All that She Wants” and “Don’t Turn Around”.

The Fugees- The Score
Technically, this is one of the biggest selling albums worldwide of 1996 and it scored the global chart-topper, their own hip-hop version of “Killing Me Softly”. “Ready or Not” was UK chart-topper and top 40 hit in US.

Aqua- Aquarium
They became popular when pop music is dominating the charts with the reign of Spice Girls in 1997 to1998. This album was multi-platinum worldwide due to the success of number one hits “Barbie Girl” and “Doctor Jones”.

Black Eyed Peas- The E.N.D.
With 3 Billboard number one hit and multi-platinum certifications worldwide, this is considerably the groups biggest album. They stayed at number one in singles chart in US for 26 weeks through two singles.

Black Eyed Peas- Monkey Business
After the success of “Elephunk”, the group released “Monkey Business” which was a muti-platinum success elsewhere. It is among the biggest sellers of 2005. It includes the sexual hit “My Humps”.

Black Eyed Peas- Elephunk
The first LP of the group with Fergie, this album had started slowly to reach multi-platinum sales. It includes 4 worldwide hit singles including the timeless “Where’s the Love?”.

Ace of Base- The Bridge
This album might not have duplicated the group’s international debut, but it still went platinum in several countries. It featured the hit “Beautiful Life”.

Pop Vocal Groups with Male and Female Members

If there are boybands and girlbands, there are groups which has male and female members. The list I made includes groups without instruments, either doing pop, R&B and hip-hop, as long as they were a vocal group.

ABBA- They were the most popular and the biggest selling in their genre. With two males and two females, their formula even extends until the present time and some pop groups even tried to be like them.

Ace of Base- Also from Sweden, they seemed to become the next ABBA (with two males and two females) but their first success was not sustained. They were known for their biggest hit “The Sign”.

The Fugees- This American hip-hop group became famous with their LP “The Score” as well as their version of “Killing Me Softly”. Consists of Wyclef Jean, Pras Michael and Lauryn Hill, all of them had solo successes.

Aqua- They came from Denmark, this group became popular through “Barbie Girl” and a huge debut album. The group had Lene (the only female member) and Rene as leads. They have two other male members.

Steps- With two male and three female members, their sound is somewhat similar to ABBA. Their song “One for Sorrow” sounds a duplicate of an ABBA song. Their success is limited though.

S Club 7- The group consisted of four ladies and three gents, their music which predominantly pop just like Steps as they were both from UK. They first became popular through a Disney TV show which was shown worldwide. Their biggest hit was the ballad “Never Had a Dream Come True”.

A-Teens- They became popular as a tribute group for ABBA, their first LP contains old hits from ABBA and was successful particularly in Europe.

City High- This group is a reminiscent of The Fugees which this group was completely formed by former Fugees member Wyclef Jean. The group scored two top 20 hits in US.

Black Eyed Peas- Originally a group without a lady, Black Eyed Peas had finally signed Fergie making them one of the biggest groups since 2000. They spanned four multi-platinum since then.
