Singers as Storytellers

Music is not just about melody, it should also about how a singer or an artist delivers the song as well as the beauty of the story being delivered. In mainstream music scene, we rarely see or hear some artists who are great storytellers apart from being good artists. It wasn’t just about the vocal gymnastics, it should also about a song going out from the heart and passes through the mouth, and eventually reach the heart of the listeners.
Here are some of the artists that had so much depth and tells suxh stories with the way they deliver their songs:

Taylor Swift
Some people say, “she wrote a new song again about her ex”, that’s how people had perceived her. But the way she had written and deliver her songs, you can hear stories. Most of these songs were hidden gems that weren’t released. It was also good to check her old country songs if you want to hear stories from a young lady with a young sweet voice.

Eminem
I can’t say I am a fan of Eminem because I am really not one. His songs has lots of profanity, yes! But it can’t hardly be said that he lacks depth. He had lots of songs about his life. He love his daughter so much, it’s in his songs. He got hurt by his mom and wife, it’s in his songs. He even tells the story of his fans. He had some serious songs too and he delivered such story well.

Ed Sheeran
I know he is one of the best songwriters nowadays apart from being a good, if not the best, singer. In fact, I love his voice and I am a professed fan. The reason why I became a fan isn’t only about his voice, talent or the lovely melodies of his songs. I can feel the story in his songs as well as how he delivers it perfectly.

Pink
Pink is not just about a muscular female singer, showing idiosyncrasies in her videos and singing with her strong vocals. She is also about depth, sharing her experiences and her views. I love how she delivered “Just Give Me a Reason” and how she told the story in “Who Knew”.

Adele
Adele may not be a total performer but what makes her standout among these heaps of great performers? It’s the way she interprets and deliver a story with the way she is singing. She may just be standing or sitting in front of you performing, but it’s not just performing. She is pouring her heart and telling the story. It reaches your heart if you will listen to not just the melody, rather the message as well, along with the majestic voice of hers.

Albums I Recently Downloaded in Spotify

I am a big fan of music streaming services and my favorite is Spotify. This year, I availed of Premium Subscription and my first month is free. But I am too early to subscribe as they offered 2 months free a month after I subscribed. Now, they are offering PhP9 (or estimated $0.20) for first three months of subscription. Not a bad offer though. It came after Apple Music offered 3-months free for Premium which was their initial offer to get subscribers.

Now, I am getting charged in my PayPal account PhP129 (or about $3) monthly for my subscription. It is not bad though as I am enjoying lpts of albums and songs. I get charged every 6th of the month and I am close to get charged again. I chose PayPal over credit card as mode of payment as I find it better and easier.

Since it is the season of new releases since there are a lot of people are purchasing records because of the holidays, I got the chance to download new albums (even not too new records) and save it to eb available offline. Here are the albums I recently downloaded.

Coldplay- A Head Full of Dreams
I am a huge Coldplay fan, however, I miss their old sound from their albums “Parachutes”, “A Rush of Blood to the Head” and “X & Y”. However, upon listening to this new album which has a new sound, I began to appreciate it. I love many of the songs especially “Fun” with Tove Lo, “Hymn for the Weekend” and the new ballad “Everglow”.

One Direction- Made in the A.M.
I had written a review of it recently here and I do think it is a great album. Nevertheless, I enjoyed their old albums more .

Janet Jackson- Unbreakable
I also written a review of this LP and I think it is a great album. It’s refreshing to hear songs that are not formulaic.

Justin Bieber- Purpose
I do think it is the best album of Justin Bieber due to its maturity and the fact that his sound has evolved.

Carly Rae Jepsen- Emotions
Critics say it is one of the best pop albums this year and I definitely agree. The 1980s sound is just refreshing.

I am hoping though that the album of Taylor Swift “1989” and the new and record-breaking album of Adele “25” be available so I can have them download for offline use.

The first single and video of the UK lads without Zayn Malik is still a hit. It is a record-breaking in streaming and huge sales in initial week.

Some Disappointing Grammy Snubs

Recently, the nominees for the most important music event, which is the Grammy Awards, was already announced. According to Billboard, the most nominations went to acclaimed rapper Kendrick Lamar, which followed by pop superstar Taylor Swift. As usual, there were many people gets disappointed with the results of nominations.

I have nothing against the board of Grammy because they have a panel who votes who will get nominated, likewise the winners. It’s not about popularity rather, as said a group decides who will win. Given that Taylor Swift got lots of nominations, I think she deserves it since the album is outstanding in quality apart from its popularity. Kendrick Lamar deserves it too as his album was generally praised by critics. But there are some great records which gained some respects and acclaims from music critics.

One of disappointing snubs was the zero nomination for Canadian pop star, Carly Rae Jepsen. She may not be at the Taylor Swift popularity level, however, her record was support. Her entire record (Emotion) contained 1980s inspired sound which is refreshing to the ears. I can’t even feel it’s a gimmick to incorporate such sound. Unlike other artists who incorporate retro sounds in their music, sounds more of a gimmick. Jepsen pulled the album out with quality retro sound.

Another disappointing result was the exclusion of Janet Jackson even from the minor categories. Her album “Unbreakable” is a lovely album. It was also well acclaimed by the critics for it unformulaic sound and her courage to put up a record that’s far from what we hear in current mainstream music. Yet, she was snubbed by the Grammy again.

Lana del Ray who often got rave reviews including her new hit record “Honeymoon”, but Grammy ignored her even a single nomination. I am not a fan of Lana but I kinda think her album was great just after first listen.

One Direction was always one of the big snubs yearly ever since they started. They were a staple yearly with successful records. Their music has grown matured. Also, this year would be their last year to release a record before going for a hiatus. Their record “FOUR” and this year’s single “Drag Me Down” was acclaimed, but Grammy has always been selfish to them.

One of the band that makes superb records was Florence and the Machine. I love their album “How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful” which surely many agrees. It was very much lauded and Florence’s gained so much respect with this record but Grammy doesn’t seem to give that respect.

Honestly, I don’t much rely on Grammys for great records. The award giving body is highly respected and very prestigious but they don’t speak for the entire music industry. Their lists of nominees was respected but for me, respects goes to all the artists who made great masterpieces that entertain people like me.
