Top Solo Female rockers

Rock music was often dominated by men as they intent to create fan base with male listeners. But it doesn’t mean rock music was listened by mostly men as there are lots of female fans of rock music too. As a result, there are female rockers who existed and they generated fans either male or female as their demographics.

I decided to create a list of these female rockers as solo artists who succeeded in the genre. Here are the top five list I made:

5. Michelle Branch- Her popularity came in late 2001 due to her hit top 15 hit “Everywhere” followed by more successful ” All You Wanted” and another top 40 hit in the US. Her 2 albums were platinum. Her music generated fans either young or adults. Teenagers loved her as she’s a teen at that time. While her sound and lyrics has more maturity.

4. Sheryl Crow- I loved her old song “Strong Enough” which was a big hit at that time, as well as “All I Wanna Do”. Her sound though was liek country rock. Her sound went harder through “If It Makes You Happy”, which is similar to Alanis Morrisette, who is extremely popularat that time. Her recent sound is lighter rock.

3. Avril Lavigne- She debuted with Michelle Branch as the top young female rocker, which Avril’s entry took the spotlight. Avril is more on teenage rock though. Her debut album “Let Go” scored big hits and meteoric number sales. She is eventually dubbed as the ‘pop rock princess’ and scored top ten albums.

2. P!nk- She may started as pop and R&B singer but decided to follow her heart and transferred to rock music via “Don’t Let Me Get Me”. She became more popular, even until now, she consistently sells millions of records and top ten hit songs. Though, her music was both pop and rock.

1. Alanis Morrisette- She may only had two officially big hit albums which “Jagged Little Pill” is the biggest selling album of its genre, Alanis remains the legend and the one who created the formula of rock in solo female rock musicians. You can hear the touch of Alanis in the music P!nk and Avril Lavigne. Her recent releases may not be successful as her first two international releases but she’s still remembered as an icon for many female rock musicians.

Reinvention and Transformation of Female Artists of 2000s to present

Due to competition in music scene nowadays, female artists from 2000s reinvent themselves a number of times in less than 20 years. Even those artists from less than 10 years ago reinvented themselves several times.

Take a look at some of the female artists’ reinvention during the mentioned era. The list also includes three artists who debuted in 1999:

Britney Spears- She’s every female teens and young kids dreamed to become during her debut year. From a wholesome young and sweet lady from her “…Baby One More Time” and “Oops… I Did it Again” era to a sensual “Britney” to sexier and even went naked on “Womanizer” video. Her music also evolved from bubblegum pop to R&B, dance, EDM and pure pop.

Christina Aguilera- She’s being tagged by many as “Britney Spears clone” and a wholesome singer. However, she can sing better than Britney. After 3 years from her initial success, she went “dirtier” and abandoned her bubblegum image, as well as her music to R&B and sexual theme. With “Back to Basics”, she jumped back decades to more jazzy and blues sound. She innovated to a futuristic woman for “Bionic” which was met with lukewarm response.

Jennifer Lopez- She’s one of the female singers who never changed her persona. Her appearance and physical identity has been the same. Her music from a R&B singer changed to EDM pop with “Love?”, which remained until the present time.

P!nk- During her debut, she was known as a R&B pop singer until she broke out after more than a year to a rock star. From time to time, she sings pop, but her identity as rock star is always there which made her more successful.

Rihanna- She may be the “Queen of Reinvention” for this decade. She was a wholesome singer until she had gone bad. Her music ranged from R&B, pop and EDM. She changed her look in every album she made. She maintained her relevance in 10 years of her career.

Lady Gaga- She can be credited for changing the music landscape when EDM became famous. Her avant garde fashion became more daring. Recently, she toned down to a more serious performer in recent big events.

Taylor Swift- From an American Sweetheart image of a country singer from her first 3 LPs, she combined pop and country for “Red”. Recently, she completely crossed over to pop which made her a bigger star not just in US but also internationally.

New Releases Reviews: Pink, Nick Jonas, Selena Gomez

P!nk- Today’s the Day

A new song from P!nk was just released and already entered the iTunes charts. The song was called “Today’s the Day”. It was not confirmed if the song will be the carrier single for a new album but what was confirmed is, it will be the new theme song of the hit talk show “Ellen”. It is a pop song with a slight touch of rock and EDM. The song has a positive message and the melody was catchy. It is appropriately written for the show and its concept.

Nick Jonas- Levels

Nick Jonas continues his streak of one word song titles. After the poppy “Jealous” and the matured “Chains”, Nick just released his new single which will be the first single for his upcoming  LP which will due next year, according to him. In this song, it has deviated from the sound of his self-titled album and followed the formula of what many pop stars did. From his R&B/pop album, now he seems trying out pop and EDM. However, the song sounds like a Max Martin song but with funkier sound. It is already making its way to higher “level” on the charts at the moment.

Selena Gomez- Same Old Song

Selena Gomez is getting impressive with her musicality as she deviated from her old pop (somewhat manufactured) to more maturity. Her music turns into a cool, dark and deep sound which started with her hit “The Heart Wants What it Wants”. She’s gaining acclaim from critics and fans and she’s heading the right decision musically and may have one of the most acclaimed album in coming season. This song which was co-written by British singer Charlii XCX and it was very distinct which the singer is at the song’s background. The song may soon break the charts as his previous song did.
