Boybands may have gone hiatus during the first half of 2000s but some of them remained while others existed during the last five years. Here are the biggest hits from them during the said period.

One Direction- Live While We’re Young
Being dubbed as the biggest boyband of their time, this song carried their second album which was a big seller. It hit the top 10 of many countries as well as UK and US both peaking at number 3.

NSYNC- This I Promise You
One of the most romantic ballad from a boyband, this song which was Richard Marx penned, propelled to US top 5 in late 2000.

This may be from the last album of the group but it still became a huge dance hit topping UK’s official chart.

One Direction- One Thing
This song was from 1D’s debut LP and hit the top 40 and top 10 in US and UK, respectively. But it was a bigger hit accross Asia. Also, the video is among any boyband and 1D’s most watched videos on YouTube.

Westlife- Uptown Girl
This song topped UK and parts of Europe and Asia in 2001. The Billy Joel original was intended for Comic Relief in UK for 2001 and eventually became the group’s seventh UK chart-topper.

NSYNC- Girlfriend
This is officially the last single from the boyband and was huge closing for them as it was hit as it hit topped 5 in several territories including US and UK.

98 Degrees- Give Me Just One Night (Una Noche)
The guys tried something different incorporating Latin music is a success for them when this song peaked inside the top 5 in the US and some countries.

Blue ft. Elton John- Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word
This song failed the US charts but the impact in Europe is too wide and even stretched to Asia. It was the biggest hit from the pop/R&B group which featured the original singer of the song.

Backstreet Boys- Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely
Taken from their 1999 album, this one was released during the wake of 2000. It was a top ten hut in many territories which was a good opening for the decade for BSB.

NSYNC- It’s Gonna Be Me
Following the success of “Bye, Bye, Bye”, this song never failed and even became the group’s first number one hit on Billboard. It was top ten hit in major charts worldwide.

The Wanted- Glad You Came
When this song was released, it seems another boyband will break records. But this song was not duplicated by The Wanted. Still, it was multiple platinum in the US after number 3 peak and number 1 hit in UK.

Backstreet Boys- Shape of My Heart
As a carrier single for BSB, this song will surely be a big hit for them. It was huge in major charts but was a number 9 hit in US. Lowest among their top 10 hits.

One Direction- Story of My Life
Due to incorporating folk in this song, it was well received by many people. Even non-Directioners loved the song which was a top ten hit globally.

NSYNC- Bye, Bye, Bye

New Song Releases Review: Adele, Justin Bieber, One Direction

Adele- Hello
After years of waiting for a new record from her, finally, we got to hear a new song from our dear Adele. After the super blockbuster LP “21”, Adele is set for a new LP which was also simply entitled as “25”. I bet many of you know why she named her album with that number. By the way, this new song “Hello” was already released and is set to start in the charts with a bang. I checked the iTunes charts and it is number one in almost all countries. It seemed people really longed for this record, even many celebrities did. Checked it on Twitter and you will see. “Hello” is a ballad about heartbreak but lighter than it used to in “21” songs. It is a tearjerker if you will figure its lyrics out. Adele’s voice is always been awesome as she showcased on “Hello”. It may not be on par with “Rolling in the Deep” but it is still a very nice song and waiting for Adele is worth it.

Justin Bieber- Sorry
After the worldwide smash “What Do You Mean?”, Justin came back with this new EDM pop tune. “Sorry” which is about being apologetic and asking for forgiveness may be directed towards ex, Selena Gomez or fans for his mistakes done. Through this song, it is obvious that Justin took a different direction compared to “Journals”. The song though is like a duplicate of “What Do You Mean?” with less impact. “Mean” is a great song but Sorry is just like the poor sequel.

One Direction- Perfect
This song was announced as the second single for the lads’ anticipated first album as quartet “Made in the A.M.”. Although, a promotional song “Infinity” was released prior. The song was originally a pop/rock ballad song but I can’t feel its impact compared to their power ballads such as “Story of My Life” or “You and I”. With the remix version, it sounds even better.

Reinvention and Transformation of Pop Groups

Pop group life isn’t that long. Many of them lasted at least 5 years which is already considered long. While others were only 2-3 years. But many even lasted even just a year! So it is wise for pop groups to make necessary transformations if they wanted to maintain their relevance in the industry. Pop groups with young members turn to more matured sound and lyrics.

Spice Girls- The group loss a member after almost 2 years from their debut. They became a quartet and released a new album called “Forever”. From a pop group people used to hear bubblegum pop sound to urban sound and sexual songs.

All Saints- The group can be considered as a rival of Spice Girls and their sound and style is like combining Spice Girls and R&B trio TLC. But with their second album, they shifted to more electronic pop from the usual pop and R&B sound.

Backstreet Boys- From pure pop sound during their peak, the boyband tool a more rock sound with “Never Gone”. It may not restored their former success but it is still a good try of reinvention.

NSYNC- The usual boyband sound set by the Backstreet Boys can be heard on NSYNC’s first two albums. But with their third album “Celebrity”, there are songs similar from their previous albums. However, there are a number of songs that are purely R&B, the kind of music expected from them if they haven’t took hiatus.

One Direction-The boyband was known for powerpop tunes that are really catchy and appealing especially to young people. Cheeky attitude also helped the band gain millions of fans. With the release of “Midnight Memories”, they sounded more mature with pop rock sounds and includes the folk-ish “Story of My Life”. More matured sound came about with “FOUR” and expecting a different kind of souns in an upcoming album.

Big album releases this season/One Direction vs Justin Bieber/Adele’s most awaited

The last quarter of every year used to be the season of new albums from many music stars. Either a full studio album or a compilation, expect these records to be released in record and online stores.

As October already started, new records are now on its way. Just this week, Janet Jackson’s first record in many years “Unbreakable” was already released. It’s already well-received by the critics and die-hard Janet fans. Next week, Selena Gomez is on its way and expected to be her biggest record with new sound she incorporated for “Revival” and positive reviews for its new released singles.

November would be the month of biggest releases. British girl group Little Mix is set to conquer the charts after huge sales in UK for hit single “Black Magic”, and this song is currently selling well in iTunes. The second week of November would be a big tension for two of biggest pop acts. Justin Bieber’s comeback “Purpose” already announced a month ago to be released. The biggest boyband One Direction recently announced to release their album the same date with Bieber, now a hot topic in music industry. It is hard to predict who will win the battle since both have huge fanbase. Justin Bieber is currently the number one artist in singles chart with the EDM pop track “What Do You Mean?” which had been running for weeks. While One Direction’s “Drag Me Down” peaked inside the top 5 in many countries. Bieber might seem to win but he never had an album to sell more than 500,000 as One Direction did in two of their albums. He had big selling singles though. While One Direction often topped albums charts but singles do big on its first week and dip in singles charts in succeeding weeks. One Direction may surely sell more internationally, but US sales is unpredictable. Since trends in music changes so it is hard to predict who will win. It’s the fans who can answer will win.

The next artist expected to sell big was Adele. It’s not yet confirmed but it is circulating in news sites across the web that it is expected this October with tentative title “25”, which might have set a pattern for her. Recently, I wrote an article about her new record stated that this is one of the most anticipated one.

Surely, these records mentioned will be big hits knowing it is the season when sales surge.

New Releases Review: Naughty Boy ft Beyonce & Arrow Benjamin, One Direction, Hailee Steinfield

Naughty Boy ft. Beyonce and Arrow Benjamin- Runnin’ (Lose it All)

After successful collaboration with Sam Smith, Naughty Boy worked with one of the biggest pop stars in the world, Beyonce. Arrow Benjamin was also featured in the song. It was Beyonce’s latest recording release after “7/11”. From hip-hop and R&B tune, this time she turned to this EDM track. This song, however, reminds me of her song “Haunted”. Her voice showed her prowess as well as Arrow Benjamin, who didn’t fail with his part. This song may possibly be a hit once it was released and may be a start of working relationship of Beyonce and Naughty Boy. Despite the strong performances of the artists, melody-wise, not as catchy as many hit EDM tracts.

One Direction- Infinity

After the huge success of “Drag Me Down” at the charts, One Direction finally released the follow-up for their upcoming LP they just named “Made in the A.M.”, which will be out ,as usual, on November. The song is a mid tempo ballad driven by synth and drums. The lyrics wa believed to be about former member Zayn Malik. The message is fine but it lacked more sincerity with the words. It’s just a short song to accommodate more words. The melody was good but not on par with “Story of My Life”. Many claimed, “Drag Me Down” was way bettef but I prefer this song.

Hailee Steinfield- Love Myself

After her notable appearance at the successful musical comedy film “Pitch Perfect 2”, Hailee Steinfield didn’t waste her talent and pursued musical career. When I watched the film, she has a good voice and possibly can carry the next “Pitch Perfect” movie. When I heard this I was like she should’ve done a better musical approach with a voice like that. The lyrics, was also believed as suggestive in social media which Hailee denied as it is about empowerment. Melodically, it is catchy but expected better from her. The song was already released more than a month ago but just catching up interest recently.

Pop Groups are short-lived

Many pop groups come and many of them go. Popularity of pop groups were hardly sustained. There are some factors why many successful pop bands eventually take hiatus or go to definite break up. After many years, some pop groups reunite, while others closed doors and denied reformation of the group.

One of the factors why pop groups cannot sustain their fame was due to their fan bases. Their demography almost covers youngsters who grow up and their tastes and preferences changes. Also, music evolves and some pop groups cannot easily adapt to changes. Other reasons, some pop groups faces so much pressure, exhaustion and conflict with fellow member, while other member of a group desired solo efforts.

Here are the list of huge pop groups during the last 20 years who turned short-lived

Spice Girls

The group were the biggest group during their era and were credited for changing the face of pop music. They became an empire of merchandise apart from music superstars. Their first single which was  “Wannabe”, was first released on July 1996 in UK. After less than 2 years, Geri Halliwell left Spice Girls while the remaining four took hiatus after their December 1998 released single “Goodbye”. After pursuing solo efforts, the four members reunited but with lukewarm response. Reunion came in 2007 with the five members for a tour and compilation with notable box office ticket sales. The group’s heydays can be considered short lived from Wannabe’s release in 1996 to Geri’s departure in 1998 which was less than 2 years.

NSYNC

NSYNC first released their first record in Europe in 1996 with “I Want You Back” and in Asia in 1997. US success came in 1998 and enjoyed more success in 2000 with record breaking album “No Strings Attached”. Their last album was released in 2001 with “Celebrity” while last single was in 2002. Reunion never came to fruition due to Justin Timberlake’s solo success. From their worldwide success which became official in 1998 to Celebrity’s last single release, it was about 4 years which is not long for globally successful artists.

Backstreet Boys

Backstreet Boys were the biggest boyband ever when in terms of record sales. Their first single “We’ve Got it Goin’ On” was first distributed in late 1995 but Euro-wide as well as in Asia success came in 1996. They became known in the US in 1997 but more successful in 1998 until the phenomenal success of “Millenium” in 1999. They released “Chapter 1” as compilation album in 2001 along with “Drowning” then took hiatus. They reunited in 2005 and succeeded by 3 more studio albums but never regained their old success. So far, the band became internationally successful from 1997-2001. It is somewhat okay but not too long.

Destiny’s Child

The group was formerly a quartet during first official single’s breakthrough in 1998 but international breakthrough came when they became trio (2 member left, 2 members replaced them, and the other one left) in 2000. Before hiatus, their last album was released in 2001 through “Survivor”. They made huge comeback in 2004 but announced disbandment in 2006 after number 1 compilation album “#1”.

One Direction

The group was known as formed by Simon Cowell through X-Factor UK. Their first single which went straight to number in UK in 2011, enjoyed worldwide success in early 2012. The boyband became huge and the biggest boyband of the time. They had 4 number 1 and internationally successful albums until Zayn Malik left earlier this year. Lately, the group announced hiatus after their upcoming album. So from 2012 success until today, the group had 3 glorious years in music industry.

Will Zayn Malik Be Able to Make it as Solo Superstar?

Six months ago, a news broke the hearts of many Directioners (One Direction fans) when its member Zayn Malik announced that he will be officially leaving One Direction, he reasoned he wants private and normal life away from the limelight. However, just few weeks ago, he revealed the real reason why he left One Direction. He had signed contracts with RCA Records for his solo album. Yes, going solo is his real reason why he left the group which upset many Directioners.

Now, the question is, will he be able to make it big like any other successful artists who were originally from the group? Many members of successful groups did not succeed going solo. Only few of them became real icons. Let’s consider, Nick Carter of Backstreet Boys. His debut album had decent sales but never brought him to the heights. Another example is the members of the Spice Girls which all of them did their solo projects. They were successful in their native UK and some parts of Europe, but never spread to the entire world. Their solo fan bases are limited. Melanie C and Geri Halliwell became biggest selling members of the group though who had real solo number 1 hits.

Among those former group members who became successful on their own were Michael Jackson, Beyonce and Justin Timberlake, which these three became pop icons. Michael Jackson became one of the biggest selling artists of all time. Beyonce and Justin Timberlake were two artists from a group and now pop icons of this generation. Beyonce who scored 5 consecutive number 1 albums was formerly from successful girl group Destiny’s Child, while Justin Timberlake was from boyband NSYNC.

There are factors though that can contribute to an artist’s success. During the time of Michael Jackson, technology is still miles away from what we have now and competition wasn’t that tight. During Beyonce and Justin Tinberlake’s debut years, there’s no social media. But today, there are many ways to advertise or promote one’s music. Social media, other platforms of selling music. It depends on an artist’s activity.

As a former member of One Direction, Zayn Malik has been active in social media and interacts with their fans. With right music and promotion, he can be among those successful solo stars who carved their name in the music industry.
