Music 10 O’s: O-Town to One Direction

1. O-Town
They were the winner of the TV show “Making the Band”. After that, they produced hit singles such as “Liquid Dreams” and “All or Nothing”. But their success was short termed.

2. OutKast
They were one of the best hip-hop duo ever. I love their song “Ms. Jackson” from “Stankonia” album. Their most successful album was “Speakerboxx / The Love Below” and my favorite from the album was “Hey Ya”.

3. Obsessed
This is a song by Mariah Carey from her album “Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel”. It was her song that was meant to diss Eminem, who first dissed her.

This is one of my favorite song from the Irish band The Cranberries. It wasn not a happy song, but I love it as it was longing to be with your family, as well as the place or hometown where you had grown up.

5. Oh Mother
This was a song by Christina Aguilera that was for her mother. It was from the album “Back to Basics” which has a classic sound on it.

6. Owl City
I love this one man band who had the hit song “Fireflies”. He achieved success again when he collaborated with Carly Rae Jepsen. It was the song “Good Time” which became his second hit.

7. On the 6
The first album by Jennifer Lopez. It was multiple platinum and produced the hit songs “If You Had My Love” and the club-ready song “Waiting for Tonight”.

8. On a Night Like This
It was a dance hit by Aussie singer Kylie Minogue. It follows the comeback hit of her “Spinning Around” which was a hit in 2000.

A song by Charlie Puth which followed his hit “Marvin Gaye” with Meghan Trainor. Rapper Chingy had his own song with that title too.

10. One Direction
The biggest boyband during the recent years. They were from UK which their popularity was extended worldwide. They were on hiatus now, but before it happened, Zayn left the group and had gone solo.

Album’s Singles Review: “Take Me Home” by One Direction

Take Me Home (album)
After the huge success of “Up All Night”, One Direction released their second album “Take Me Home” which performed well like the first album. It contained almost the same sound as songs were pop-rock and teen-pop. It has lots of love songs which many young female fans love. The album debuted at number 1 worldwide and became a fast seller for the group. It has beem certified 3x platinum in the UK and 2x platinum in United States.

Live While We’re Young
“Live While We’re Young” was the first single from “Take Me Home” by One Direction. The song sounds like the part 2 of “What Makes You Beautiful”, though the latter mentioned song was better from melody to lyrics. This song actually has somewhat sexual undertone. It became a hit  reaching the top 10 in many countries worldwide, which in United States and UK, it reached number 3.

Boybands With Number 1 Albums in US and UK: Take That /JLS / One Direction

Take That
United States- Take That tried to break American market during the latter part of their career in 1990’s but they never had a hit album there with only “Never Forget” which charted. Nevertheless, it only peaked at number 69.
United Kingdom- Take That had successful career both in 1990’s and 2000’s. In 1990’s, they had 3 number 1 albums. They were “Everything Changes” (their second album), “Never Forget”, and their compilation album “Greatest Hits”. However, the group achived more success with their comeback and reunion in 2000’s. Those albums were “Beautiful World” (their biggest seller ever), “The Circus”, “Progress”, “III”, and the extended play “Progressed”. Take That, thus, the most successful boyband ever in United Kingdom, not even the worldwide successful One Direction.

JLS
United States- JLS attempted to release records in America but never pushed through as a single released never charted.
United Kingdom- The R&B boy group did well in their own country, United Kingdom, which their debut album also called “JLS” went to number 1. The album was a big seller which BPI certified it with 4x platinum. Their other albums went to top 5.

One Direction
United States- One Direction became the biggest boyband to hit America this 2010’s. They had four consecutive number 1 albums. “Up All Night” was their first album which became a number 1 album and multiplatinum. “Take Me Home” was as successful as well. It was followed by “Midnight Memories” which was their fastest seller. Then “FOUR” which was their last number 1 album. “Made in the A.M.” failed from number 1 which only settled at second after a battle with Justin Bieber.
United Kingdom- One Direction failed to top the albums chart with their first album, just peaking at number 2. However, their succeeding albums “Take Me Home”, Midnight Memories”, “FOUR”, and “Made in the A.M.”, all went to number one.

Album’s Singles Review: One Direction “Up All Night”

After a long break without boybands heard on radio, One Direction came to bring boyband back in music industry. It started with their stint as contestants after being formed in UK X-Factor by star maker Simon Cowell. Their success started through this debut album of them “Up All Night”. The album has sugary pop sound with pop/rock hooks. The album is a huge number one hit in the US and top ten in many countries. In their country, United Kingdom, the album peaked at number 2 but it became multiple platinum there.

What Makes You Beautiful
This song has started it all for the guys. The powerpop song is very catchy which led the guys to success. Its music video with the guys in the beach had a number of parodies. The so g went to number one in United Kingdom, and went multiplatinum in United States when it went to top 5.

Gotta Be You
One Direction toned down a bit in this smooth ballad. It is pleasing to the ear with such easy listening to this song. The  music video is very simple too which the guys went to the woods. The song may have not reached the Billboard Hot 100, maybe due to “What Makes You Beautiful” still breaking radio. It became their second top 3 in the UK though.
Rate: 8.75 out of 10

One Thing
“One Thing” had became the group’s second big hit from “Up All Night”. I love the song’s catchiness as it sounds like a bouncy clone of “What Makes You Beautiful”. The song became the group’s third UK top ten and second US top 40. It was widely received in Asia. It went on to sell millions of downloads.
Rate: 8.25 out of 10

More than This
This was the last single from “Up All Night” and a nice way to end the album as single. However, the song was not a hit as it was not a real official single. It is a beautiful ballad and the synth add up to the song’s beauty.

Pop Groups that People Wanted to Have Reunion

I am a fan of music and I fell in love to the music of a lot of groups. As a music fan, I knew there were a lot there who are fans of groups too. I still follow such groups and see if they have something new to offer after their disbandment and ever wanted to reunite. Many fans still crave for these bands to make music again.

TLC
It might be impossible that the trio can reunite as a trio again. Sadly, that in early 2000’s, Lisa Lopes known as “Left Eye” passed away. She didn’t reach the point that their album “Girl Talk” was released, where she still has vocals, of course as a rapper. But fans still want the remaining two members to release new music. I think it is in the works.

NSYNC
Justin Timberlake had became a huge superstar but currently enjoying life out of the limelight as a father and a husband. When they had reunited in a perforance in VMA, fans looked back and wanted a reunion of the group since they took a hiatus and never heard back of new album since “Celebrity”.

Destiny’s Child
The two members Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams shown up and performed with co-member Beyonce during the latter’s performance in Superbowl Halftime. It went fans to request the girls for a reunion album, yet, it didn’t happen.

Jonas Brothers
The guys has planned for an album released before, however, it was not released which frustrated a lot of fans. Maybe someday they will release a new one.

Spice Girls
They were the biggest pop group during 1990s and popularity was cut off when Ger Halliwell left the group. They had reunited in 2007 for a tour and a compilation album. But fans still wanted to see them back together. There were negotiations though for a reunion.

One Direction
It was just months ago when hiatus was announced but it seems fans are missing them and see them together again. Well, they recently had released the music video for “History”. While a reunion? It is still unlikely. Directioners though are hoping for the best.

Music Rivalries: Boy Groups

Competitions can be somewhat good for artists to do better. Someone may have started it all and another one comes up, the first one who existed may do better to keep up with competitions. Boybands has undergone competitions too. Rivalry existed so both artists will do better and prove and show to the world what they have and what they can do. Here are some of the boy groups who became rivalries.

Backstreet Boys vs NSYNC
There are other groups who came first than Backstreet Boys but these guys became the pioneer when the boyband term existed. Backstreet Boys is selling millions worldwide when their nearest competitor, NSYNC, came. There are lots of boybands at the time but with regards to style and music, NSYNC is the most similar. NSYNC even eventually signed to Backstreet Boys’ record label. Backstreet Boys remained the biggest selling boyband though. However, NSYNC has the record which Backstreet Boys never defeated. That was the fastest selling album ever in US wherein NSYNC had two albums has surpassed Backstreet Boys’ first week US sales. It is obvious that they can never break the record. Still, Backstreet Boys remains the biggest selling boyband ever.

One Direction vs The Wanted
Both groups were from the same country, United Kingdom. They both scored number one hits there. Their respective singles charted in the US at almost the same time. However, The Wanted’s “Glad You Came” charted higher in Bilboard Hot 100 which is at number 3, while One Direction peaked at number 4 with “What Makes You Beautiful”. But it’s not about higher peak. It’s about longevity and sales, which the latter is more triumphant. The Wanted never scored a number one album, while One Direction did in their first four albums. If not for the relevance and success of Justin Bieber’s “Purpose”, then One Direction could’ve scored 5 number 1 albums. One Direction scored tons of top 10 hits  worldwide too. While The Wanted disbanded too early. It is clear that One Direction won.

Concert Ticket Prices

It seems concert ticket prices of foreign artists are very high. Recently, the Queen of Pop, Madonna just held her “Rebel Heart Tour” concert in the Philippines. The highest ticket price of her concert stands at PhP 57,750 which is more than $1,200. While general admission tickets costed more than PhP 3,000, equuvalent to $60+. It served as the most expensive concert ticket price in the Philippines by a foreign artist. And due to insistent public demand, the show was held in the country for two nights! It is the first time for Madonna to come and do a concert in the Philippines. She never came to the country decades ago knowing her sexual songs and image, that she might not be allowed to come. It took more than 3 decades of her career to finally come here, that’s why fans doesn’t mind the ticket price just to see her concert.

Looking back 20 years ago, another high-profile artist in the name of Michael Jackson held his concert in the country too. The ticket price was too high, though, it was half of Madonna’s recent concert. But converting it after the inflation, then the ticket price with Madonna’s concert is close. If Michael Jackson is still here and went to the country for a concert, then that might be too expensive too.

When Jennifer Lopez came to the country, VIP ticket price is also high. It ranged more than $500 or more than PhP 25,000. That’s similar to the last concert of Beyonce in the country too.

Last year, another high-profile concert was held too. It was the UK Ireland boyband One Direction. The ticket price was about PhP 17,000 or more than $360. Due to demands and request of fans, the show was extended to two nights. However, the concert doesn’t include Zayn Malik who went back home due to stress. After few days, he announced his departure from the group.

It seems high-profile artists demand high concert tickets. That’s because of their marketability. In the near future, there were more international artists coming to the country and expect high ticket prices.

Battle of Same Song Titles: Simple Plan vs One Direction / Hanson vs Black Eyed Peas

As the battle of song title continues, this time, a rock band and a pop band is battling it out. Then a pop/rock siblings band and a hip-hop group is battling their songs too. Here are they:

Simple Plan vs One Direction
“Perfect”
Simple Plan is one of the great young bands during mid-2000’s and this song is a great one. It talks about apologizing for not being perfect which may apply to family which expectations was not met. The song became the band’s biggest hit in the US for reaching the top 25. It topped the charts in the Philippines too.

One Direction’s second single for final album “Made in the A.M.” was this pop song “Perfect”. It talks doing something perfect that the girl wants to do. The song charted worldwide and in the top in many countries.

Verdict:
Simple Plan- Perfect
Melody and Lyrics- 3.75 / Success- 2.75 = 6.5

One Direction- Perfect
Melody and Lyrics- 3.0 / Success- 3.5 = 6.5

Winner: Both of them wins as they tied.

Hanson vs Black Eyed Peas
“Where’s the Love?”

The Hanson song talks about not getting the love back from the girl and even got fooled. The song followed the success of “Mmmbop” but less successful than the latter mentioned. It went to top 10 in some countries globally which included the UK.

Actually, the song from Black Eyed Peas is “Where IS” while the one from Hanson is “Where’s”. Still, they fit in this battle as the titles are very close. The song from BEP is about love which is missing in this world that’s why many people are hurting and dying. With its beautiful melody and the relevant lyrics, it became a worldwide number one hit. Though, in the US, it reached number 8.

Verdict:
Hanson- Where’s the Love?
Melody and lyrics- 3.25 / Success- 3.5 = 6.75

Black Eyed Peas- Where is the Love?
Melody and Lyrics- 4.75 / Success- 4.5 = 9.25

Winner: It’s very clear they Black Eyed Peas won the battle.

The album became one of the biggest selling albums of 2013 and served as a huge comeback of Justin Timberlake. Despite its huge sales, it only scored two major and official hit singles “Suit and Tie” and “Mirrors”. The reason may be, the volume two was released at the same year.

Albums that are more successful than its singles (2011-2012)

Here are the successful albums during 2011to 2012 which became big sellers but their singles had underperformed compared to the albums:

Mumford & Sons – Sigh No More
Mumford Sons is one of the biggest folk rock bands during the recent years. It became multiplatinum in many countries including the US and UK which it was triple and quintuple platinum respectively. It released four official singles some of those songs went to top 40 or top 20, but didn’t have notable singles.

“4” is obviously the fourth album by Beyonce. It went to number one and top ten of majority of the countries it charted and among the biggest sellers of 2011. It has released numerous singles and reached the UK top 3 for her “Best Thing I Never Had” single. But most songs didn’t make impact in the charts.

Lana Del Rey – Born To Die
Lana Del Rey is one of top selling female artists in recent years and this first major album has been successful worldwide as it sold about 8 million copies worldwide, a number which was rarely reached this time. Despite the huge sales of the record, it only scored one hit single namely “Summertime Sadness”.

One Direction – Up All Night
“Up All Night” is the recordbreaking first album of One Direction which became one of the biggest selling albums of 2012. Depsite being a top seller, the album only managed one real hit which is “What Makes You Beautiful”. Other songs achieved numerous streams and airplays but chart positions were low.

One Direction – Take Me Home
After the success of their debut album, One Direction immediately worked and released their second album “Take Me Home”. The album topped the charts worldwide and has been one of the fastest selling albums of 2012. It is also among the top selling albums of the year which made One Direction score two top sellers in one year. The album released only three official singles though with only one top ten hit in the US, despite hitting the top ten with all of the singles in UK. Their singles climb fast but droppes fast from the charts.
