It is rare to see rock bands in musical rivalry, but it do exists. While in pop bands, they really exists as often stimulated in news by media.
Limp Bizkit vs Linkin Park
Limp Bizkit has been on the limelight years before Linkin Park had released their debut. But Limp Bizkit achieved the peak of their mainstream success in 1999 in the US through the multiplatinum album “Significant Other” and international attention in 2000 via “Chocolate Starfish and Hotdog Flavored Water” which has been worldwide mega-seller. That same year, Linkin Park debuted in the music scene with their debut album “Hybrid Theory”. Limp Bizkit has a better attention at that time when “Chocolate Starfish” album sold more than a million in just a week in America, while “Hybrid Theory” is already selling well but struggling to reach the heights of Limp Bizkit. The two bands were compared because of similar style, both rap and rock. Nevertheless, with Limp Bizkit, Fred Durst is solely the vocalist, while Linkin Park has Chester Bennington as main vocals and Mike Shinoda is the rapper. Despite the attention for Limp Bizkit, it has changed as “Chocolate Starfish and Hotdog Flavored Water” became their last commercially successful record by the band. Then that opportunity was given to Linkin Park who had a longer successful career and even surpassed the success of Limp Bizkit to double.
Hanson vs The Moffatts
Hanson used to be the pop rock band with siblings as members then. However, a new band came out in 1998 which their debut single sounds like a slower rip-off of Hanson’s “Mmmbop”. The two may not had such rivalry in America as The Moffatts was unknown then in the country, but in Asia comparison has been rampant wherein fans are competing which is the more successful group. Hanson became very successful during their early mainstream career. But their peak remained with “Middle of Nowhere” album. Their succeeding albuns were less successful. The Moffatts released their debut in America more than a year after achieving success in Asia, but with moderate reception for them. The Moffatts achieved huge success in Asia, particularly in the Philippines. But if you are going to look at their entire careet, Hanson brothers did better. They are still releasing independent albums which are still charting.
Coldplay vs Keane
Coldplay achieved success in early 2000s, while Keane at mid-2000s. When Keane came out, similarities was noticed and comparisons were maid between the two band. Both band sounds soft as well as their vocals. But I must admit both were great bands. Keane achieved success through their albums “Hopes and Fears”. But none of their succeeding albums managed to match their debut. While Coldplay is still very much relevant these days. They still scored a number one album through “A Head Full of Dreams”. It is very clear that Coldplay still slays music while Keane is currently inactive.
Music rivalries is also a thing in girlbands. From 1990s, there are girl groups who became rivals. Until, there are girl groups which the media is considering rivals.
En Vogue vs TLC
En Vogue is an R&B girl group of four who released their debut album in 1990. Since then, they had score platinums and multiplatinum albums. After two years, a younger and hipper group existed which is TLC. The latter group achieved more success when their second album “CrazySexyCool” was released, which became the second biggest selling girl group album according to reports. En Vogue though kept on scoring top ten singles. Still, TLC left a legacy which made them bigger stars.
Spice Girls vs All Saints
Spice Girls broke records and changed the pop scene in 1996. They became phenomenal and Spice mania has become known elsewhere. Their first two albums were big sellers. They scored total of 9 number 1 hits in a short time. Other girl groups came out like She Moves and Solid Harmonie came out after them. But the one who came close to them was All Saints. The girls debuted in late 1997 and worldwide success was achieved in 1998. They were big in UK then and internationally, however, success in the US is limited where they had at least one top ten hit. Clearly, All Saints’ international popularity were miles behind the Spice Girls, but at least they became the rival of the biggest pop act of their time.
Fifth Harmony vs Little Mix
Fifth Harmony and Little Mix was formed from the same show, but different countries. Fifth Harmony was formed from US version of X-Factor, while Little Mix was created by the UK version, the same with One Direction. They became rivals as fans are fighting in social media about who is the top girl group at the time. Fifth Harmony had top 5 album in the US and top 40 songs. Little Mix had top 10 albums there too. While in UK, Little Mix is way far more popular than Fifth Harmony. The verdict? Fifth Harmony is more popular in US, Little Mix takes UK. About who is bigger and better, it’s hard to say for now as nobody reached the Spice Girls level.
Competitions can be somewhat good for artists to do better. Someone may have started it all and another one comes up, the first one who existed may do better to keep up with competitions. Boybands has undergone competitions too. Rivalry existed so both artists will do better and prove and show to the world what they have and what they can do. Here are some of the boy groups who became rivalries.
Backstreet Boys vs NSYNC
There are other groups who came first than Backstreet Boys but these guys became the pioneer when the boyband term existed. Backstreet Boys is selling millions worldwide when their nearest competitor, NSYNC, came. There are lots of boybands at the time but with regards to style and music, NSYNC is the most similar. NSYNC even eventually signed to Backstreet Boys’ record label. Backstreet Boys remained the biggest selling boyband though. However, NSYNC has the record which Backstreet Boys never defeated. That was the fastest selling album ever in US wherein NSYNC had two albums has surpassed Backstreet Boys’ first week US sales. It is obvious that they can never break the record. Still, Backstreet Boys remains the biggest selling boyband ever.
One Direction vs The Wanted
Both groups were from the same country, United Kingdom. They both scored number one hits there. Their respective singles charted in the US at almost the same time. However, The Wanted’s “Glad You Came” charted higher in Bilboard Hot 100 which is at number 3, while One Direction peaked at number 4 with “What Makes You Beautiful”. But it’s not about higher peak. It’s about longevity and sales, which the latter is more triumphant. The Wanted never scored a number one album, while One Direction did in their first four albums. If not for the relevance and success of Justin Bieber’s “Purpose”, then One Direction could’ve scored 5 number 1 albums. One Direction scored tons of top 10 hits worldwide too. While The Wanted disbanded too early. It is clear that One Direction won.
Britney Spears vs Christina Aguilera
Britney Spears may had first released her first album, but Christina Aguilera first has a single released. It was in 1998 when she sang the theme song of “Mulan” called “Reflection”, though with lukewarm reception. When Britney Spears relesed her first single “…Baby One More Time”, a new brnad of pop just existed. Her album became one of the biggest sellers of 1999. That same year, Christina Aguilera released her lead single for her debut album called “Genie in a Bottle”. The song became a success as it reached number worldwide too. Her album also debuted at number in US. She is really close to Britney. Christina Aguilera is a better vocalist than Britney. While Britney is a better performer than Christina. But if their respective careers were summed up, Britney is victorious. Britney is just have a well-planned release of her studio album, unlike Christina who had released some compilations in between. Recently, both had flop albums, but they can be considered as icons.
Taylor Swift vs Katy Perry
Both artists started as very different artist. Taylor Swift started as a country singer but crossed over to pop music. While Katy Perry was a former Christiam singer to pop rock to pure pop. Katy Perry was even considered as a rival to Lady Gaga. Rivalry between Katy and Taylor just existed when they had professional problems which led to Taylor write the song “Bad Blood” which was believed as intended for Katy Perry. Both were pop stars and very successful.
Brandy vs Monica
Brandy and Monica were considered as rivals then. Eventually, they got to work together with the song “The Boy is Mine” which is became a huge success worldwide. Despite the collaboration, they haven’t had good relationship. Still, they worked together but it seems they were okay now. Both had great hits but longevity says Brandy had bigger success.
