This song was co-written by Mariah for her father who already passed away, as well as her other loved ones. Trends and Cliches in Mainstream Music (2000-2004)

Music is still very much alive from 2000-2004, however, album sales was seen on its decline. This was due to the rise of digital music and piracy. Still, we saw the trends in music with the rise of new artists, as well as trends in genres.

First-week million sales
It has been a phenomenon in music to sell one million copies in just one week. The record breaker for a long time was set on first quarter of 2000 when NSYNC broke sales with 2.4 million US sales. That same year, Eminem broke more than 1.7 million for “Marshall Mathers LP, Britney Spears second LP “Oops… I Did It Again” with more than 1.3 million and Limp Bizkit’s “Chocolate Starfish and Hotdog Flavored Water” with more than 1 million. Several artists this era reached a million in first week like Usher, Norah Jones and Backstreet Boys (had two albums with Millenium from 1999). NSYNC held the second place for a long time to with “Celebrity” with 1.8 million plus, and another album from Eminem.

Boybands going hiatus
Boybands enjoyed their peak during 1995-1999. They started the new millenium with a bang, but as 2002 started, boybands such as Backstreet Boys and NSYNC took hiatus. European boybands continued though like Westlife and Blue.

Going solo
As boybands and girlbands go hiatus, many members of those groups went solo. NSYNC’s Justin Timberlake achieved success with his debut. Nick Carter of Backstreet Boys though had limited success. While Beyonce of Destiny’s Child had her superstardom began in 2004.

Young female stars going sexy
We also saw the young female stars going sexier this era. Britney Spears left her role model image as she has gone sexy in her third album. Christina Aguilera is very notable though as she has shown her dirtiest image in 2002 with her video “Dirrty” and her breakout album “Stripped”.

Young female pop/rock stars
In 2002, Avril Lavigne rocked the charts with her debut album “Let Go”. Despite Michelle Branch first came out, she was not credited for the rise of pop/rock music. Vanessa Carlton had platinum success with her debut album, while Jennifer Love Hewitt released a pop/rock album. We also saw Hillary Duff and Ashley Simpson followed the pop/rock genre.

Rock bands
Rock has become a very popular genre in 2000 with the success of Limp Bizkit. Linkin Park became victorious too who scored the biggest selling rock album of the decade with “Hybrid Theory” and a huge second album “Meteora”. Nickelback, Coldplay and Creed became successful this era too.

R&B music
R&B music has been on its peak when year 2000 begun. It was led by Destiny’s Child, Jennifer Lopez, Ashanti, Beyonce and others. Even pop stars incorporated R&B in their music.

Hip-hop music
Hip-hop music scene is very much alive this era too. We saw the success of Eminem, Nelly and Ja Rule, as well as the introductory of Chingy, 50 Cent and others.

Remixes
Remixes has been popular too this era. It started when Jennifer Lopez topped the charts with “I’m Real” which led to the release of her remix album. The album set record when it went to number one. Other successful remix albums were from P. Diddy and Linkin Park.

10 Songs With “Games/Game”

Games were often used in songs as playing the heart of someone making them believe that you loved them. Sometimes, it was also used in literal games which includes card games.

Backstreet Boys- Quit Playing Games (With My Heart)
I think this song is one of the most successful “game” songs. In this pop track, it’s about not playing with one’s heart like a game. It was a top 5 hit worldwide in 1997.

Jewel- Foolish Games
When you feel like being played, it will tear you apart. This “game” song from Jewel was released along with her biggest hit “You Were Meant for Me”.

Lady Gaga- Love Game
Well, it’s not really about playing love like a game, Gaga knows what it is all about. It turned out to be Gaga’s hit songs as it is one of her earliest hit songs.

Santana and Michelle Branch- Game of Love
No matter what you feel in a relationship, it is because it is part of the “game” of love. The light rock song became a top 5 hit in Billboart charts.

Peter Gabriel- Games Without Frontiers
Peter Gabriel came out with this “game” song which became a top 5 hit in UK.

Alan Parsons Project- Games People Play
Oh well, one of the great old “game” songs. It was released in early 1980’s and went to the top 40 of the charts.

Foreigner- Head Games
One of the most popular rock songs then, this “game” song from Foreigners helped their album to success.

Abba- The Name of the Game
Abba wants to know the name of the game, I don’t know either. Lol! This song became an international hit for the Swedish group. It also became a Billboard hit.

Shirley Ellis- The Name Game
This is one of the catchiest “game” song. No real meaning of the song and it is clearly a “game” song. It was very popular even until now.

Love was considered a game which was bound to lose as Amy implied. This song was a top 40 hit in the UK.

Top Solo Female rockers

Rock music was often dominated by men as they intent to create fan base with male listeners. But it doesn’t mean rock music was listened by mostly men as there are lots of female fans of rock music too. As a result, there are female rockers who existed and they generated fans either male or female as their demographics.

I decided to create a list of these female rockers as solo artists who succeeded in the genre. Here are the top five list I made:

5. Michelle Branch- Her popularity came in late 2001 due to her hit top 15 hit “Everywhere” followed by more successful ” All You Wanted” and another top 40 hit in the US. Her 2 albums were platinum. Her music generated fans either young or adults. Teenagers loved her as she’s a teen at that time. While her sound and lyrics has more maturity.

4. Sheryl Crow- I loved her old song “Strong Enough” which was a big hit at that time, as well as “All I Wanna Do”. Her sound though was liek country rock. Her sound went harder through “If It Makes You Happy”, which is similar to Alanis Morrisette, who is extremely popularat that time. Her recent sound is lighter rock.

3. Avril Lavigne- She debuted with Michelle Branch as the top young female rocker, which Avril’s entry took the spotlight. Avril is more on teenage rock though. Her debut album “Let Go” scored big hits and meteoric number sales. She is eventually dubbed as the ‘pop rock princess’ and scored top ten albums.

2. P!nk- She may started as pop and R&B singer but decided to follow her heart and transferred to rock music via “Don’t Let Me Get Me”. She became more popular, even until now, she consistently sells millions of records and top ten hit songs. Though, her music was both pop and rock.

1. Alanis Morrisette- She may only had two officially big hit albums which “Jagged Little Pill” is the biggest selling album of its genre, Alanis remains the legend and the one who created the formula of rock in solo female rock musicians. You can hear the touch of Alanis in the music P!nk and Avril Lavigne. Her recent releases may not be successful as her first two international releases but she’s still remembered as an icon for many female rock musicians.
