The album’s sound is still the usual pop and rock, however, you can hear more pop sound in this record. The album was a global hit and did better than the previous album. It went to number 2 both in United States and United Kingdom, and has received awards for certifications.

Give a Little More
“Give a Little More” was the second single for “Hands All Over”. As you listen to the song, it is evidently an upbeat funky song, with such seductive vocals from Adam Levine. I first listened to the song after being performed by Phillip Phillips on one of his performances on American Idol as a contestant, which he sang it in a slower register. The song haven’t got a wide release as it was released in limited territories. It reached number 86 in the US.

Album’s Singles Review: Maroon 5 “Songs About Jane”

Maroon 5 rose to success via this debut album of them “Songs About Jane”. The album’s genre consists of pop rock, alternative, and blue eyed soul as heard from the official singles released. It went on to be one of the biggest sellers of 2004 after hitting the charts with hit singles contributing to the album’s success. It was a top 10 album in the US and had gone 5x platinum certified by RIAA, while it was a bigger hit in United Kingdom where it reached number 1.

Harder to Breathe
The first time I heard about the band through “Harder to Breathe” which sounded harder,  but I mistake the vocalist as female upon hearing from the radio because of feminine voice of Adam Levine. The song charted in many countries including US and UK, where it went to the top 20.

This Love
After the heavy sound of “Harder to Breathe”, the band went lighter in this pop rock song “This Love”. The song gave more popularity for the band as it became one of the biggest songs of 2004 and helped propel their album reach its heights as it went top 10 worldwide.

Battle of Same Song Title: Lionel Ritchie vs Adele / Maroon 5 vs Robin Schulz

This is such an interesting battle of same song titles because the two song titles were in one word. The two song titles has been seen in social media lately as well as in YouTube.

Lionel Ritchie vs Adele
Lionel Ritchie came out with this song, “Hello”, about thirty years ago. The song was a huge hit then and it reached number one in Billboard Hot 100. Recently, during the Grammy Awards which there’s a tribute for his contribution in music, Demi Lovato performed the song. It was a good version of hers though.

Adele is breaking music records via her third album “25”. The album’s carrier single “Hello” broke records too as a fast selling downloaded single and fastest tp reach a billion views on YouTube. The heartbreaking song went to number one worldwide, which of course included her native land United Kingdom, and the US charts where it stayed on top for 10 weeks.

Lionel Ritchie- Hello
Melody and Lyrics- 3.75 / Success- 4.0 = 7.75

Adele- Hello
Melody and Lyrics- 4.0 / Success- 4.75 = 8.75

Winner: Both had high points, but Adele still takes the lead of 1.0 in this “Hello” battle.

Maroon 5 vs Robin Schulz
Maroon 5 came out last year with this funky and catchy song “Sugar”. The music video was notable for secretly crashing and performing in weddings. Though, it was claimed by many that it’s not real and scripted. The song was very successful worldwide reaching the top ten in many countries and sold millions. YouTube views even reached over a billion.

Robin Schulz came out with this song a few months after Maroon 5’s. But they were not the same song as Robin is a DJ who produced the song while the vocals was provided by Francesco Yates. The song went to number one in some countries, thus, it also charted in US and UK but at at lower position.

Maroon 5- Sugar
Melody and Lyrics- 3.5 / Success- 4.25 = 7.75

Robin Schulz ft. Francesco Yates- Sugar
Melody and Lyrics- 2.75 / Success- 3.75 = 6.5

Battle of Same Song Titles: No Doubt vs Maroon 5 / Eminem vs Ingrid Michaelson

In these battles, the first one is like not just the battle of same song titles rather a battle of two bands. While other one was from a rapper and a folk pop singer. Check them below:

No Doubt vs Maroon 5
“Sunday Morning”
No Doubt just reached the height of their career then in mainstream music world through “Don’t Speak” and “Tragic Kingdom” album. This song is one of the succeeding singles of the LP and had limited success failing to reach the top 40. It is about the breakup of Gwen to her bandmate and then boyfriend Tony Kanal.

This is the last official single off Maroon 5’s first album “Songs About Jane”. It was less successful than preceeding releases but it charted within top 40 in many countries it charted. It became successful here in the Philippines. The song has undertones in its lyrics.

No Doubt- Sunday Morning
Melody and Lyrics- 3.0 / Success- 2.25 = 5.25

Maroon 5- Sunday Morning
Melody and Lyrics-3.25 / Success- 2.75= 6.0

Winner: With few points, Maroon 5 still won against No Doubt in this “Sunday Morning” battle.

Eminem vs Ingrid Michaelson
“The Way I Am”

This song was released at the height of Eminem in controversy due to his lyrics in his songs for dissing and slamming other personalities. The song tells about him and story, thus, should be understood. It was a top ten hit in some territories then, but moderately successful in the US.

This is one of the hits of Ingrid Michaelson which hit the US top 40. Her sound wasn’t too mainstream which is folk pop and wasn’t released in many countries. But the song sounds too sweet along with Ingrid’s beautiful and simple voice.

Eminem- The Way I Am
Melody and Lyrics- 3.25 / Success- 3.25= 6.5

Ingrid Michaelson- The Way I Am
Melody and Lyrics- 3.75 / Succsss- 2.25= 6.0

Winner: Eminem won “The Way I Am” battle with a small gap.

Songs that are more popular on YouTube than as a single- 1(Billion views)

There were a stockpile of music videos which billion/s of views. However, there are songs which became more popular on YouTube than as a single itself. Here are some of them that I had compiled in this list.

Psy- Gangnam Style
This song became a huge international hit worldwide and the biggest K-Pop song ever. However, it can still be considered as a bigger YouTube hit than as a single. Why? The success of the song can be attributed to its YouTube success. As it went viral on YouTube, it has become a craze. And the total views? It is more than 2.5 billion and remains the most viewed video ever.

Justin Bieber ft. Ludacris- Baby
The video of “Baby” once held the record for the most viewed video on YouTube. Right now, it was overtaken by a number of videos and was taken off from top 5. Then why it is a bigger YouTube hit than as a single? It may have sold millions but it neither reached number in UK and US. It topped the charts in some countries though, and top 10 in most countries. Views exceeded 1.29 billion.

Enrique Iglesias featuring Sean Paul, Descemer Bueno and Gente de Zona- Bailando
Enrique Iglesias has been successful both in English and Spanish market. This song may have been a big hit in Spanish market, but not as huge in English markets. In US, it failed to reach the top 10. While in UK, it barely cracked the top 75, whereas in YouTube, it reached 1.26 billion views. Well, it is one among Billion Views Club.

Sia- Chandelier
This song has been a sleeper hit in the charts, but it only went to number one in few countries.Still, it reached the top 10 in majority of countries in entered. But it was a bigger hit on YouTube when it reached 1.11 billion in views.

Maroon 5- Sugar
This is one of the most memorable music video last year. It has been a huge single too, but not a number one hit on Billboard Hot 100 and UK charts. It went to top 10 in several territories though. Views was stellar though as it reached more than 1.02 billion.

Trends and Cliches in Mainstream Music (Since 2010)

Since 2010, there are a lot of changes in music industry and we also witnessed how album sales went down. Though, we saw the success and record breaking success of Adele as the most successful artist in this era. Here are some of the trends and cliches in music industry since 2010:

Electronic dance music (EDM)
Electronic dance music continued to dominate all the genres. We heard successful records from David Guetta, Avicci, Calvin Harris, Zedd, and a lot more. Even most pop stars and even R&B singers sung a lot of dance music, showing how popular the genre is. Some of them were Rihanna, Beyonce, Chris Brown, Britney Spears, Usher, and a lot more.

Music crossover to pop
There were a lot of artists who changed or tried other genres which led to their notable success, though some did not succeed. Maroon 5 may already had pop hits before 2010, however, they became full time pop band with their 2012 album “Overexposed” and their recent “V”. Taylor Swift is the most successful in crossing over to pop. She gave a taste of pop tunes in her partly pop, partly country album “Red”. With her latest album “1989”, she became a fully-pledged pop star.

Formerly teen stars going sexy
There were a lot young stars before 2010 who took the “good girl, gone bad” route. Miley Cyrus became the most controversial who went naked in “Wrecking Ball”, magazine covers, parties and the raunchy performance on VMA 2013. Selena Gomez also went naked in her current album cover “Revival” and music video. Demi Lovato also went sexier on her new album “Confident”.

Million selling first week
It seems the phenomenon during first half of 2000s is happening since 2010 despite the sales are going down with albums. Taylor Swift has the most nunber of albums to reach the million threshold. Her third studip release “Speak Now” reached over 1.04 million on its first week according to Soundscan. Her fourth album “Red” sold higher with 1.21 million, while her recent and current album exceeded 1.28 million. But the recordbreaker and fastest among all was Adele’s “25”, which exceeded 3.38 million.

Soundtrack albums did well since 2010. “Frozen” is the most successful which became very successful in 2014. Other successful soundtracks were “Fifty Shades of Grey”, Pitch Perfect 1 and 2, “Furious 7”, “Glee” albums, and a lot more.

Retro music
It seems retro and old music is incorporated in music of some pop stars. Meghan Trainor is known for her pop, soul and doo wop sound on her “Title” album. Charlie Puth incorporated Motown sound on his music, and the 80’s sound on Carly Rae Jepsen’s sound on her “Emotions” LP.

Surprise releases of albums
Beyonce broke record for releasing surprise album and went to number 1 with massive sales. Other artists followed suit which included Drake.
