Music 10 L’s: Lauryn Hill to Limp Bizkit

1. Lauryn Hill
She’s formerly the vocalist and a member of The Fugees and became a successful solo artist with her album “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill”. She is a magnificent artist but I wonder where is she now.

2. La Isla Bonita
A single by the Queen of Pop Madonna. It was Spanish inspired and one of the biggest hits off her multi-platinum hit album “True Blue” from the 80s.

3. Lil Wayne
He is a very popular rapper during the second half of 2000s. His popular hit song was “Lollipop” while his popular album was “The Carter”, which had its sequel.

4. Lady Gaga
She is one of the top female artists emerged during the late 2000s. She seemed under hiatus now after her album “Artpop” underperformed.

5. Linkin Park
One of my favorite bands ever. They seemed on a break but hoping they will release new materials soon. Haven’t heard from them for a long time. I miss those “Hybrid Theory” days.

6. Last Resort
The first ever song I heard from the rock band Papa Roach. It is a great track but none of their succeeding tracks matched it.

7. Lorde
She’s a popular singer from New Zealand. I love the style of her songs and the message. She’s young but already a great songwriter.

8. Let Her Go
A nice but sad love song from Passenger. It was one of the biggest hits during the recent years. I love the folk feel of the song.

9. Let It Go
One of the biggest selling singles recently. It wad due to the success of the animated movie “Frozen”. The song may not have reached number 1 in different countries, but it was a sleeper hit song.

10. Limp Bizkit
The band was very hot then, but popularity was taken over by Linkin Park. They had great songs such as “Take a Look Around”,  “My Way” and “Rollin'”.

Nickelback
United States- Nickelback has been very successful in America. They may only had 1 number 1 album there which is “All the Right Reasons”, but they also had other 5 albums went to top 10. Three of those albums went multiplatinum, including “Silver Side Up” which went 6x platinum. Their bigges seller next to “Reason” with 8x platinum, by the RIAA.

Limp Bizkit

Music Rivalries: Bands (Rock or Pop)

It is rare to see rock bands in musical rivalry, but it do exists. While in pop bands, they really exists as often stimulated in news by media.

Limp Bizkit vs Linkin Park
Limp Bizkit has been on the limelight years before Linkin Park had released their debut. But Limp Bizkit achieved the peak of their mainstream success in 1999 in the US through the multiplatinum album “Significant Other” and international attention in 2000 via “Chocolate Starfish and Hotdog Flavored Water” which has been worldwide mega-seller. That same year, Linkin Park debuted in the music scene with their debut album “Hybrid Theory”. Limp Bizkit has a better attention at that time when “Chocolate Starfish” album sold more than a million in just a week in America, while “Hybrid Theory” is already selling well but struggling to reach the heights of Limp Bizkit. The two bands were compared because of similar style, both rap and rock. Nevertheless, with Limp Bizkit, Fred Durst is solely the vocalist, while Linkin Park has Chester Bennington as main vocals and Mike Shinoda is the rapper. Despite the attention for Limp Bizkit, it has changed as “Chocolate Starfish and Hotdog Flavored Water” became their last commercially successful record by the band. Then that opportunity was given to Linkin Park who had a longer successful career and even surpassed the success of Limp Bizkit to double.

Hanson vs The Moffatts
Hanson used to be the pop rock band with siblings as members then. However, a new band came out in 1998 which their debut single sounds like a slower rip-off of Hanson’s “Mmmbop”. The two may not had such rivalry in America as The Moffatts was unknown then in the country, but in Asia comparison has been rampant wherein fans are competing which is the more successful group. Hanson became very successful during their early mainstream career. But their peak remained with “Middle of Nowhere” album. Their succeeding albuns were less successful. The Moffatts released their debut in America more than a year after achieving success in Asia, but with moderate reception for them. The Moffatts achieved huge success in Asia, particularly in the Philippines. But if you are going to look at their entire careet, Hanson brothers did better. They are still releasing independent albums which are still charting.

Coldplay vs Keane
Coldplay achieved success in early 2000s, while Keane at mid-2000s. When Keane came out, similarities was noticed and comparisons were maid between the two band. Both band sounds soft as well as their vocals. But I must admit both were great bands. Keane achieved success through their albums “Hopes and Fears”. But none of their succeeding albums managed to match their debut. While Coldplay is still very much relevant these days. They still scored a number one album through “A Head Full of Dreams”. It is very clear that Coldplay still slays music while Keane is currently inactive.

Bon Jovi made a huge comeback in 2000 with this record. It was multiplatinum worldwide, but it only had one real hit single which is “It’s My Life”.

Knowing this album is a compilation album, it will surely not release a new single knowing this band from decades ago. The album was said to have sold over 31 million.

Linkin Park- Hybrid Theory (2000)
This debut album from Linkin Park is the top album of 2001 and continual success in 2002. Despite of the album’s success, it’s only real big hit was “In the End”, which peaked at number 2 in Billboard Hot 100.

Alicia Keys made a big debut in this album which was reportedly reached sales of 12 million. However, it only had one worldwide hit which is “Fallin'”.

NSYNC- Celebrity (2001)
This third album is currently the third fastes selling album of all-time in the US. Despite its success, the album scored only one US top 10 hit namely, “Girlfriend”.

Limp Bizkit- Chocolate Starfish and Hotdog Flavored Water (2000)
Limp Bizkit was already a superstar band in the US but this album extended their popularity worldwide. Despite its stellar sales, it didn’t score a timeless number one hit.

Trends and Cliches in Mainstream Music (2000-2004)

Music is still very much alive from 2000-2004, however, album sales was seen on its decline. This was due to the rise of digital music and piracy. Still, we saw the trends in music with the rise of new artists, as well as trends in genres.

It has been a phenomenon in music to sell one million copies in just one week. The record breaker for a long time was set on first quarter of 2000 when NSYNC broke sales with 2.4 million US sales. Boybands enjoyed their peak during 1995-1999. They started the new millenium with a bang, but as 2002 started, boybands such as Backstreet Boys and NSYNC took hiatus. European boybands continued though like Westlife and Blue.

As boybands and girlbands go hiatus, many members of those groups went solo. NSYNC’s Justin Timberlake achieved success with his debut. Nick Carter of Backstreet Boys though had limited success. While Beyonce of Destiny’s Child had her superstardom began in 2004.

Young female stars going sexy
We also saw the young female stars going sexier this era. Britney Spears left her role model image as she has gone sexy in her third album. Christina Aguilera is very notable though as she has shown her dirtiest image in 2002 with her video “Dirrty” and her breakout album “Stripped”.

Young female pop/rock stars
In 2002, Avril Lavigne rocked the charts with her debut album “Let Go”. Despite Michelle Branch first came out, she was not credited for the rise of pop/rock music. Vanessa Carlton had platinum success with her debut album, while Jennifer Love Hewitt released a pop/rock album. We also saw Hillary Duff and Ashley Simpson followed the pop/rock genre.

Rock bands
Rock has become a very popular genre in 2000 with the success of Limp Bizkit. Linkin Park became victorious too who scored the biggest selling rock album of the decade with “Hybrid Theory” and a huge second album “Meteora”. Nickelback, Coldplay and Creed became successful this era too.

R&B music

Hip-hop music
Hip-hop music scene is very much alive this era too. We saw the success of Eminem, Nelly and Ja Rule, as well as the introductory of Chingy, 50 Cent and others.
