Music 10 K’s: Kanye West to Knock You Down

1. Kanye West
Who can forget about Kanye West? He is very controversial on what he does, including stuff he and his wife Kim Kardashian does. Apart from that, he was considered as a great musicians. He also had a lot of hit songs and albums.

2. Keep On Moving
This is a dance pop track by British boyband Five. I admit, I am not a fan of their songs, but I do appreciate this song. This was way back in 2000.

3. Keeps Gettin’ Better
This was a compilation album by Christina Aguilera. It also released a single also called “Keeps Gettin’ Better”, became her last solo single to reach ths US top 10.

4. Keane
They were a great band from United Kingdom. Their music was similar to Coldplay, but both were great bands, no need for comparisons.

5. Kelsey
Yes, it is a name. But it is also a song by duo Metro Station. I love the song but they weren’t releasing new records recently. They had a hit song which was “Shake It”

5. Kiss and Tell
This was the title of Selena Gomez and the Scene’s album. The album wasn’t that successful, though follow-ups were okay.

6. Kendrick Lamar
He is one of the greatest rapper today and his album”To Pimp a Butterfly” was a Grammy winner. It was even well-received by many and was one of the best releases of 2015.

7. Key to My Life
This was the first song by Boyzone which was a hit in United Kingdom. It is a great ballad anyway, though quite a bit cheesy.

8. Kylie Minogue
She is one of the top pop supertars spanning in a number of decades. She also had an album with the same title of her name.

9. Kristen Bell
I thought she is just an actress, but yeah she is a good singer too. Remember the voice of her in the film “Frozen” where she released singles too.

10. Knock You Down
A song by Keri Hilson. It was her biggest single ever and featured Kanye West and Ne-Yo. It is a lovely track with its R&B beats and synth on it.

Popular Artists Wins on Grammy Awards

I have been watching Grammy for several years and it seems the winners tonight don’t seem like who usually wins in Grammy Awards. Popularity is not an assurance to win the Grammys as winners are determined through the decision of the panel of judges. Even the most popular singer in a year don’t even win a minor category. During the 1990’s, the Spice Girls never achieved nominations. While Backstreet Boys and NSYNC who became extremely popular during their heydays never won an award. Britney Spears did not even win an award on her earlier success. She got to win a minor award after several years in the industry.

Justin Bieber never won an award until this year after winning for the song “Where are You Now” as a featured artist.  One Direction was never even nominated despite the critical acclaim in their recent records. Ariana Grande got nominations last year but didn’t receive an award.
With the major categories, Best New Artist, Song of the Year, Album of the Year and Record of the Year, it seems those were not into pop or tennybopper music. But this year, those I predicted to win lost. While some of those that are my choices won. I had written my prediction and choices recently. The reason why I came out with those predictions because Grammys used to choose those who are underrated artists. Popular artists often defeated by less popular artists but it was not the case this year. In fact, with those four major categories, the winners were those popular.
Let’s start with Best New Artist, my choice is Meghan  Trainor. She is even the most mainstreamly successful among those nominated.I predicted James Bay to win, but the winner ended up as Meghan Trainor.
With Song of the Year, I expected and predicted Kendrick Lamar’s “Alright”, however, it went to my choice, Ed Sheeran. Knowing Lamar’s number of nominations, I expected him to win.
The Album of the Year winner is Taylor Swift with “1989”. I expected Chris Stapleton’s “Traveller” as it is generally acclaimed while Taylor shifted to pop music. Anyway, it is Taylor’s second time to win the category.
The Record of the Year winner this year was “Uptown Funk” by Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars. I expected D’Angelo to win with “Really Love” but ended up to the upbeat song. My choice though was “Thinking Out Loud”. Good for “Uptown Funk” since it is the number one song of 2015.
Despite not winning the major categories, Kendrick Lamar won multiple awards. Congratulations to all the winners.

My Prediction and Choice Winners for Grammy Awards 2016 (Album of the Year and Record of the Year)

Another two major categories of Grammy Awards is Album of the Year and Record of the Year. Here’s my choice and prediction to win in these two categories:

Album of the Year
“Sound & Color” by Alabama Shakes
The album is the first US number album by the band. It peaked inside the top 10 in other countries as well.
“To Pimp a Butterfly” by Kendrick Lamar
It went to number one in a number of countries including the US. Currently, it already went platinum.
“Traveller” by Chris Stapleton
Initially debuted at the top 15, the album went to number one after Chris’ performance in CMA. The album was acclaimed by fans and critics.
“1989” by Taylor Swift
The album has been a blockbuster worldwide after scoring hit songs from it and the turning point of Swift becoming a pop star.
“Beauty Behind the Madness” by The Weeknd
The Weeknd already had high chart positions before but this album became his breakthrough. It went to number one and gone multiplatinum.
Choice: “1989”, this is an amazing pop album from a former country singer.
Prediction: “Traveller”, the album has been a highly recommended album.

Record of the Year
“Really Love” by D’Angelo and the Vanguard
The song was highly acclaimed despite not charting in major charts elsewhere.
“Uptown Funk” by Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars
This is the biggest hit worldwide last year after breaking records in sales.
“Thinking Out Loud” by Ed Sheeran
One of the two songs also nominated for Song of the Year. This song was a hit globally.
“Blank Space” by Taylor Swift
One of the several nominations of Taylor Swift. Aside from Ed Sheeran, this song was also a nominee for Song of the Year.
“Can’t Feel My Face” by The Weeknd
One of the number one singles of 2015, it is one of the contenders to be the winner.
Choice: “Thinking Out Loud”, he was already nominated multiple times last year without wins, and I want him to win this year.
Prediction: “Really Love”, the song was highly acclaimed by the critics, and Grammy loves underperforming songs.

Catch the Grammy Awards tomorrow to know the winners.

Yearend Special: Top Songs by a Female Artist of 2015

There are lot of big hits this year made by female artists. This year, Taylor Swift led scoring about 5 songs hitting the top 10 while Meghan Trainor scored big singles too. Here are the top female singles this year:

Taylor Swift- Blank Space
Apart from the longest number single of Taylor Swift in Billboard, it is also her first video to reach a billion views. Congrats Taylor for such an achievement in this song.

The pop, doo-wop and upbeat track is such a fresh song during these times. This song was a top ten hit in several countries which included US while it made a higher position at second in UK.

Rachel Platten- Fight Song
This can be considered a breakthrough for Rachel. It ended up as a Billboard top 10 and a surprise UK chart-topper.

Sia- Elastic Heart
The song may not have reach the upper five in countries but it has been in the chart for many weeks and still in charts in some countries as of now.

Rihanna, Kanye West and Paul McCartney- FourFiveSeconds
It was fresh to hear Rihanna with this kind of music. Plus a collaboration from the legendary Paul McCartney and successful hip-hopper Kanye West. The song stayed in top 5 elsewhere it entered

Yearend Special: Top Pop Songs of 2015

Pop music has always been popular anytime. Even some artists who did other genres, they crossed over pop music as some of them did this year. Here are the biggest pop songs for 2015.

Taylor Swift- Blank Space
After crossing over to pop music, this song from her full length pop album was one of the biggest pop songs this year. It even crossed 1 billion views on YouTube!

Ed Sheeran- Thinking Out Loud
I often hear this song wherever I am and I loved this before even becoming popular. The song was multi-platinum elsewhere and even dubbed as “national anthem” by some people in our country.

Maroon 5- Sugar
I love the 70s funk vibe in this song. Adam’s vocals even fitted. This sone went to top ten worldwide and even had hundreds of millions of views on YouTube.

Ellie Goulding- Love Me Like You Do
This pop song was very popular in sales and radio. It was even very successful in video charts and even non-Fifty Shades fans love this song.

One Direction- Drag Me Down
The first single and video of the UK lads without Zayn Malik is still a hit. It is a record-breaking in streaming and huge sales in initial week.

Taylor Swift ft. Kendrick Lamar- Bad Blood
Taylor invited Kendrick Lamr to do the rap plus a highly hyped music video could’ve helped the song’s success. How about the assumption that it is meant for Katy Perry? I think it does help as publicity.

Justin Bieber- What Do You Mean?
He’s one of the biggest artists during the last half of the year and this pop EDM song is a streaming record holder.

Rachel Platten- Fight Song
It’s empowering theme helped the song reached number 1 in some countries like UK, and a top ten position in US. Well, I think Taylor’s promotion does help too.

Charlie Puth ft. Meghan Trainor- Marvin Gaye
The song may haven’t broken the top 20 but it was a huge hit in other countries. The sensual song went to number 1 in a number of territories.

Adele- Hello
The biggest record released during the last quarter, this song effortlessly went to number just like her album “25” did. Congrats to you Adele!

Some Disappointing Grammy Snubs

Recently, the nominees for the most important music event, which is the Grammy Awards, was already announced. According to Billboard, the most nominations went to acclaimed rapper Kendrick Lamar, which followed by pop superstar Taylor Swift. As usual, there were many people gets disappointed with the results of nominations.

I have nothing against the board of Grammy because they have a panel who votes who will get nominated, likewise the winners. It’s not about popularity rather, as said a group decides who will win. Given that Taylor Swift got lots of nominations, I think she deserves it since the album is outstanding in quality apart from its popularity. Kendrick Lamar deserves it too as his album was generally praised by critics. But there are some great records which gained some respects and acclaims from music critics.

One of disappointing snubs was the zero nomination for Canadian pop star, Carly Rae Jepsen. She may not be at the Taylor Swift popularity level, however, her record was support. Her entire record (Emotion) contained 1980s inspired sound which is refreshing to the ears. I can’t even feel it’s a gimmick to incorporate such sound. Unlike other artists who incorporate retro sounds in their music, sounds more of a gimmick. Jepsen pulled the album out with quality retro sound.

Another disappointing result was the exclusion of Janet Jackson even from the minor categories. Her album “Unbreakable” is a lovely album. It was also well acclaimed by the critics for it unformulaic sound and her courage to put up a record that’s far from what we hear in current mainstream music. Yet, she was snubbed by the Grammy again.

Lana del Ray who often got rave reviews including her new hit record “Honeymoon”, but Grammy ignored her even a single nomination. I am not a fan of Lana but I kinda think her album was great just after first listen.

One Direction was always one of the big snubs yearly ever since they started. They were a staple yearly with successful records. Their music has grown matured. Also, this year would be their last year to release a record before going for a hiatus. Their record “FOUR” and this year’s single “Drag Me Down” was acclaimed, but Grammy has always been selfish to them.

One of the band that makes superb records was Florence and the Machine. I love their album “How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful” which surely many agrees. It was very much lauded and Florence’s gained so much respect with this record but Grammy doesn’t seem to give that respect.

Honestly, I don’t much rely on Grammys for great records. The award giving body is highly respected and very prestigious but they don’t speak for the entire music industry. Their lists of nominees was respected but for me, respects goes to all the artists who made great masterpieces that entertain people like me.

Yearend Special: Top R&B and Hip-hop Albums of 2015

R&B music may not be as hot as it was a decade ago but there are lots of R&B albums released this year. However, at this yearend chart, most albums that made impact were from rappers and there’s only one artist who’s purely a singer. Here are the impactful R&B/hip-hop albums this year.

Drake- If You’re Reading This, It’s Too Late
Drake may be one of the biggest rappers this day and I think behind Eminem when it comes to success. This record incredibly debuted on top again and even crossed millions in sales. The album was successful both commercially and critical response.

KendrIck Lamar- To Pimp a Butterfly
This is highly praised by the critics and I also included this album for the ten top albums and underrated albums of the year. Despite the success it wasn’t too overstated. The album easily entered on top of US’ Billboard 200.

Drake & Future- What a Time to Be Alive
Drake is undoubtedly the top male artist this year. His collaboration with Future and also released surprisingly easily sold thta fast to settle at the summit of American charts. The album also contains some nicely written tracks.

Fetty Wap- Fetty Wap
He can be considered as the top breakthrough artist this year due to surprisingly successful and viral hit songs. This self-titled debut from the rapper climbet to the apex as expected. It may not be as huge as the singles but still considered one of the top R&B/hip-hop records this year.

The Weeknd- Beauty Behind the Madness
The Weeknd is a no stranger in music as he already scored some top 10 albums. But just this year when he received mainstream attention. It started with the successful collaboration with pop star Ariana Grande for “Love Me Harder” and the “Fifty Shades of Grey” contribution “Earned It”, it led to the release of his new albums which received commercial and critical appeal and even settled with two number 1 songs.

Yearend Special: Underrated Albums of 2015

This year, there are some great albums that were too understated, thus, it affected the sales or performance of these records. Some of these albums released were almost unfelt when it was released, however, in this list, there are some which performed quite fine. but needed at least better attention from listeners.

Janet Jackson- Unbreakable
With slow performance in the charts of its carrier song “No Sleeep”, the album’s performance was affected. Even critics loved the album for not being formulaic and shown Janet’s courage to release an album with a sound we rarely hear. Janet’s vocals had matured for the better and you can feel through the wordings of great tracks that she really is ‘unbreakable’.

Carly Rae Jepsen- Emotion
I think this os one of the best pop albums this year. It was refreshing to hear 1980s sound in a modern pop album. The 80s beat from the tracks in this record can be heard and will make you groove like a retro person. It was a nostalgia for people who were 1980s kid. I am a 1990s kid and I appreciate the sound incorporated in the album. The album was just overstated which led to its moderate success.

Selena Gomez- Revival
Selena Gomez was all over the media few months and weeks before the album’s distribution. But due to the the hype of Justin Bieber and One Direction battle and the anticipation for Adele’s album, this album from Selena which was expected to do better quite underperformed despite its number 1 debut and two hit new songs.

One Direction- FOUR
Released last November 2014, this album should have continued success this year. It’s sales were high but not as successful as her previous records. Also, the hype with Taylor Swift’s 1989 shattered this record from 1D and that Tay’s album was overstated by media. The album released only two singles until Zayn left the pop band.

Kendrick Lamar- To Pimp a Butterfly
One of the best rap albums this 2015, despite the success in US, it didn’t spread its success to the rest of the world. With more support, it could have been a blockbuster.

Yearend Special: Top Albums of 2015

2015 is about to end and several music organizations are making their own list of the bests in music during the year. Since I am focused in mainstream music, I made my own list of the top or highly successful albums during this year. The albums listed below were in random position and not based on sales alone rather how it made impact in music this year.

Taylor Swift- 1989
Released during late 2014, this blockbuster album which was one of the biggest sellers last year is still one of the two biggest sellers this year along with 5 top 10 hits this year.

Ed Sheeran- x
Also released last year, during midyear, this sophomore effort from Ed remains one of the biggest seller this year which was also heightened by one of the biggest hits this year “Thinking Out Loud”.

Sam Smith- In the Lonely Hour
One of the albums with heartbreak themes, this debut record from Sam Smith was one of the biggest albums this year despit being released in 2014. With 3 top 10 hits, the album’s big win in Grammy helped the album to sell more.

Meghan Trainor- Title
This debut effort from Meghan was released at the beginning of the year. With doo-wop, Motown and pop influences, the album was a chart-topper and scored at least 3 top 10 singles.

Drake- If You’re Reading This, It’s Too Late
This is the biggest rap album this year either critically or commercially. Drake has always been consistent with sales of his records.

One Direction- FOUR
One of the biggest November releases in 2014, this fourth record from the boyband is still one of the biggest sellers this 2015. It recorded 2 top 40 hits.

Kendrick Lamar- To Pimp a Butterfly
With general praises from critics, this effort from the rapper eventually became a number 1 album.

Justin Bieber- Purpose
After some years out of the limelight due to troubles and underperforming record “Journals”, he came back this year with three hits which are included to this hit new album.

One Direction- Made in the A.M.
This last record from the lads before hiatus may have been defeated by Justin Bieber but it’s sales can never be considered a failure due to its high sales. It even scored two top 10 singles.

Adele- 25
This hot new LP from Adele will effortlessly trump all records in sales at the end of the year after going multi-platinum in just one week. Aside from the album’s sales, “Hello” was also a record-breaker.
