Album’s Singles Review: Meghan Trainor “Title”

Meghan Trainor is one of the biggest artists in mainstream music in 2015 after scoring hit singles and a chart-topping album through “Title”. This debut album by Meghan Trainor contains pop songs with influence of doo wop and 1960’s¬† and 1970’s sound. The album has lots of catchy tunes which makes it an outstanding one. The album debuted at number 1 Billboard 200 albums. In United Kingdom, it went to number 1 too.

All About That Bass
“All About that Bass” was Meghan Trainor’s first ever single. It is a pop song with doo wop influence and talks about not allowing oneself to be fat-shamed and embracing what your size is. The song became a number 1 single worldwide and even sold about 11 million copies, according to IFPI.

Lips are Movin’
“Lips are Movin'” was released as the second single for “Title”. The song finally made Meghan Trainor as a hit-maker instead of a one-hit wonder after this song hit the top 5 in America. It also hit the top 10 globally and sold millions of singles downloads. It is an upbeat pop track with doo wop sound just like “All About That Bass”. But this song sounds catchier and cleaner than the first single with its rap verses.
Rate: 9.0 out of 10

Dear Future Husband
“Dear Future Husband” is a song which became controversial with its music video for sexism. The song went to top 20 in many countries including United States and UK. But the song is a sleeper hit for its longevity in music charts. The song is very catchy and the retro sound is very obvious in this track.

Like I Never Lose You (with John Legend)
Meghan Trainor and John Legend collaborated in this ballad. The two sang it very well, and was a beautiful ballad with so much soul from the two artists. The song went to top 10 in Billboard Hot 100, her fourth top 20 hit there.

Performances Highlights in Grammy Awards

Grammy Awards had just wrapped up and the winners were finally announced. Aside from unexpected winners, there treat performances. The highlight performances was the tribute to the legendary soul singer Lionel Ritchie, rock legend Lemmy, and the late David Bowie. The Lionel Ritchie tribute performers were R&B singer John Legend, pop stars Demi Lovato and Meghan Trainor, and country star Luke Bryan. After the artists mentioned performed, Luke and John escorted Lionel from the audience up to the stage and sung “All Night Long” as the closing of the performance. Hollywood Vampires made a hard rocking performance¬† too as a tribute to Lemmy.
Another tribute performance was Lady Gaga who paid homage to the late David Bowie. She’s dressed a la David Bowie. She is the perfect singer to do the tribute knowing Lady Gaga’s biggest influence was David Bowie which she vocally claimed when she is just starting as a mainstream artist. The background colorful effects of the performance is magnificent too.
Taylor Swift had a good performance top of her current single “Out of the Woods”. She has one of the most number of nominations this year after her highly successful album “1999”.
Justin Bieber finally performed on Grammy Awards too. It is his first time in the award show where he had his first win too as a featured artist for Skrillex and Diplo’s “Where are You Now?”, which he performed after an acoustic version of “Love Yourself“.
There were great duets too. I loved the performance of Andra Day and Ellie Goulding with the songs “Rise Up” and the popular “Love Me Like You Do”. Country stars Sam Hunt and Carrie Underwood performed a mash-up of their songs.
One of the best performance was the one from rapper Kendrick Lamar which receives a standing ovation. The Weeknd also did good performing his songs. Miguel sang his own version of Michael Jackson’s “She’s Out of My Life”.
Adele’s performance is one of the most awaited. However, sound problem occurred during the performance which affected the supposedly magnificent performance. In just a few seconds of her performance, the sound or audio was lost. It is supposed to be an intimate performance with her vocals and piano, but there’s guitar and bass sound in some part. It is obvious on Adele’s face and even her voice that she was bothered but she continued. After her performance, Adele received standing ovation despite the glitch.
To close the show, Pitbull and Robin Thicke performed with party sounds.

Songs You Can Often Hear in Malls

When you are in a mall, you can hear loud music being played. Without music, shopping experience would be boring. I don’t mean the surroundings would be silent, rather, all you can hear is the noice from people chattering which is irritating to the ears. With music, it can neutralize the annoying noise and delightful sounds. While going to different malls, I often hear almost the same music so I made a lists of songs that I often hear.

Sia- Chandelier
This song is always played everywhere. You can even hear employees singing the song.

Charlie Puth and Meghan Trainor- Marvin Gaye
I even hear this song sang by a child while in a mall. I was like, do you know what the song means?

Selena Gomez- Hands to Myself
I rarely hear her great song “Same Old Love ” in malls. But this new song by Selena Gomez was already played in a mall.

Justin Bieber- Love Yourself
This song by Justin Bieber is becoming overplayed. Even cover versions were even played is malls.

Charlie Puth- One Call Away
Charlie Puth seems becoming a favorite in malls. Aside from “Marvin Gaye”, this sing is becoming overplayed as well.

Jessie J, Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj- Bang Bang
This song is still played often, and if airplay in malls was included in music charts, it might still be in the top 10.

Sheppard- Geronimo
To be honest, I first heard this song in the mall. Since it is catchy and the lyrics amde it easier to guess the title, I downloaded the song. Until now, it is still often played in malls.

Ed Sheeran- Thinking Out Loud
Well, this song is still overplayed in malls for more than a year ago. However, it has declined at the moment.

Meghan Trainor and John Legend- Like I Never Lose You
The ballad is lovely and often played on radio. It is also overplayed on radio.

Carly Rae Jepsen- I Really Like You
The word “really” may have been overused, but it seems employees in the mall never gets tired of it.

Anthems since 2012

There are a lot songs that were too overplayed on radio and even in establishments where they play songs. In my country, as netizens say in social media, such songs were jokingly considered as “national anthem”. Since 2012, I had listed songs which became very popular and are often sung by many people. On YouTube, there are a lot versions or covers of these songs. Here’s the list I made which year by year since 2012.

2012
Adele- Someone Like You
As a lot know, this song was written for Adele’s ex-boyfriend who broke her heart. You can feel there’s so much pain in this song and many people here can relate to it. The song has been a worldwide hit, and in my country, it was a sleeper hit.

2013
Pink and Nate Ruess- Just Give Me a Reason
When trying to rekindle the love with someone and putting aside what happened before, this song fitted to a lot of people. This song has been an anthem and you can hear it everywhere you go. Hhmmm, I even feel this song was abused for being overplayed. Lol! Pink may had hits before but this became her biggest. What’s not to love in this song? A man and a woman exchanging what they feel and wants to go back together again with such a beautiful melody.

2014
John Legend- All of Me
Serenading the girl you love? This song got many girls in love the guys singing this song to them. I often hear this song sang by actors or singers on TV. Let’s not forget about Bumper Allen character of Pitch Perfect 2 where he sang this song when auditioning on The Voice. This song was also very successful worldwide.

2015
Ed Sheeran- Thinking Out Loud
I am already a fan of Ed Sheeran but became a bigger fan with this song when I first heard it. It was not yet popular at that time and I always play this song while working. However, when it began to cross the radio and often sang on TV, I stopped playing the song. When it is beginning to slow down on radio, I played it again. The song’s success continued until the end of 2015 despite being released late 2014.

2016
Justin Bieber- Love Yourself
When Justin’s “Purpose” was released, I didn’t plan to download it on my Spotify account since I am not a Belieber. But I still downloaded it. The first song that I liked which was not released at that time is “Love Yourself”. The song started to pick up a lot of plays after “Purpose” was release. It can be considered as the anthem of 2016 as it is becoming overplayed on radio. It has a lot of cover versions on YouTube as well.

10 Songs With “Everybody”

“Everybody” pertains to people, and in songs, it was mere about telling people to do things. It was also used to inviting people or what they do

R.E.M.- Everybody Hurts
This is a very emotional song and was one of my favorite 1990s ballad. When “everybody” hurts, we just have to consider people. The song was one of the known songs of the band which reached top 10 in countries. It’s music video has been popular too.

Backstreet Boys- Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)
Backstreet Boys became popular as this song which serves as a come back song for a new album (internationally) went multi-platinum worldwide. It just asks “everybody” to rock their body.

C+C Music Factory- Gotta Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)
One of the most notable electronic dance track in early 1990s, this song has no real meaning but just invites “everybody” to dance. According to Billboard, it went to number 1 in Hot 100.

Tears for Fears- Everybody Wants to Rule the World
This is one of the best “everybody” songs I knew. The message is clear in the title alone The New Wave song ruled the world charts in the 80’s and even had Lorde do her own cover.

5ive- Everybody Get Up
The song is just one of the introductory songs of the boyband and invites “everybody” to get up. The song was a big hit in their hometown, UK.

JLS- Everybody in Love
Back to back with another UK boyband, this R&B “everybody” song for those in love went to UK number 1.

Before Madonna, became very popular, this song was released which may not be a hit, but known as a dance hit. It asks everybody to dance.

John Legend- Everybody Knows
Just another sad love song which “everybody” knows that no one knows. It charted in Billboard R&B charts.

Keane- Everybody’s Changing
This song is one of my favorite Keane song. It was a top ten hit in their home country, UK, but also charted in many countries. It’s like you cannot catch up as “everybody” is changing.

5 Seconds of Summer- Hey Everybody!
A pop rock song from the Aussie guys which performed modestly. It’s just telling ‘hey’ to “everybody”. It was just released recently.

Recap: Your Face Sounds Familiar Season 2 (December 5, 2015)

The competition is going intense likewise the performances is getting harder for the celebrity impersonators. Tonight has been an interesting episode. When I first heard about the celebs doing a duet with themselves, I thought they will perform like doble-kara (double face). But when I watched all the performances tonight, I was in awe. I think the other artist was first recorded while the other artist they impersonated was the main one.

To start the show, Melai Cantiveros came back as Miley Cyrus, the impersonation that had her won during the first season.

Here are the performances of the celebrity impersonators:

KZ Tandingan as Liza Minelli and Luciano Pavarotti
“New York, New York”
The performance was amazing. She sang very well as Liza but we cannot expect a perfect Pavarotti as she was female. As Liza, she is very comfortable and enjoyed the performance. Her vocals as Liza is even perfect.

Michael Pangilinan as Sam Smith and John Legend
“Lay Me Down”
Among all the performances tonight, this is, for me, is the perfect performance. I mean his voice as Sam Smith and John Legend is perfect. No more words to say about the performance.

Denise Laurel as Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett
“The Lady is a Tramp”
Denise became a jazz singer and she did it perfectly as Lady Gaga. While the Tony Bennett performance is very impressive like how she can sound like that. I saw no pressure in this performance and Denise looked relaxed.

Kakai Bautista as Whitney Houston and Cissy Houston
“I Knew Him So Well”
Kakai did mother and daughter duet as Whitney and Cissy Houston. This can be a difficult performance since it is an emotional song but she did it well. In fact, she sang even better as Cissy.

Kean Cipriano as Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder
“Ebony and Ivory”
I never thought Kean can pull the impersonation so well. Though there are flaws as Stevie Wonder but Paul McCartney was perfect from the looks to his vocals.

Admittedly, it is the episode which I enjoyed all of the performances. Of course, the set-up and idea is good but all of the performers did very well. Even myself, I find it hard to rank them (which will surely make it difficult for the judges to rank them too) but I made the ranking below based on every performances effect on me.
1. Michael Pangilinan
2. Denise Laurel
3. KZ Tandingan
4. Kakai Bautista
5. Kean Cipriano

Since it is the last performances from the celebrities, it is becoming more interesting. With three more performers tomorrow, the top 4 will be announced tomorrow by which next week will be the finale.

Your Face Sounds Familiar Season 2 airs every Saturday and Sunday night on ABS-CBN 2.

Song Reviews: Charlie Puth, Meghan Trainor, R.City

Charlie Puth ft. Meghan Trainor-Marvin Gaye

It was refreshing to hear modern songs with old soulful sound. This is what you can hear in this song, the first single as lead, by Charlie Puth. Inviting Meghan Trainor to be in the song is a good idea, knowing M-Train also take the idea of doo-wop and retro sound in her music. It is a fusion of modern pop and retro that makes the songs ear-friendly. With regard to “Marvin Gaye” which may be a tribute but lyrics were sexual, the music was good with Charlie playing piano and his good voice. With the music video, I was quite disappointed for a reason. Charlie succeeded with the beat or sound and melody.

Rating: 7 out of 10

Meghan Trainor ft. John Legend-Like I’m Gonna Lose You

This is another Meghan Trainor related song after the song above. It is familiar to many about the classic and retro sound of Meghan Trainor and she still incorporated it in this ballad. This is the first ballad released by Meghan and I think she succeeded. It was a beautiful ballad which is like holding on to the person you love. John Legend in it is a good idea. We recently heard him being a feature artist like in Sam Smith’s “Lay Me Down”, perhaps due to the success of “All of Me”.

Rating: 8 out of 10

R. City ft. Adam Levine- Locked Away

This is a melodic and catchy song which we often hear on Adam Levine-assisted songs. It is a love song about asking a girl of she will love the guy despite anything or lapses the guy might have done. Maroon 5 used to have catchy tunes and it is present in this song through Adam Levine. But I feel like songs that Adam featured with are too generic. Remember Travie McCoy’s “Stereo Hearts”? They may not exactly have the same chords but the formula with Adam in it makes it similar.
