Female superstars who started in 2000s and their underperforming albums

Even female singers from 2000 who did very well had underperforming albums. The list includes artists who started in 1999:

Britney Spears- She consistently sell huge in her albums, though not always the same in numbers. She is even considered as Madonna’s heir to become the next Queen of Pop. Her first four studio albums were huge but with “Blackout”, it underperformed. Meanwhile, it had 2 big hit singles. She redeemed success with two succeeding albums but her recent “Britney Jean” flopped, maybe due to lack of promotion and support from fans.

Jennifer Lopez- One of the female singers who debuted in 1999, Jennifer Lopez scored a number of hit albums and singles. She had 3 multi-platinum albums until “Rebirth”, which produced hits but quickly dropped off the charts. It followed by a flop album “Brave” but regained success through “Love?” due to the successful single “On the Floor. Her recent album “AKA” became her least successful album ever.

Christina Aguilera- Christina started prettily on her self titled debut album after all of her four singles became huge hits as well as the multi-platinum success of the album. “Stripped” followed which started slow in sales and caught up after hit singles and the hit throwback sounds of “Back to Basics was well-received. Nevertheless, her last studio albums “Bionic” and “Lotus” both didn’t do well.

Miley Cyrus- Miley had huge successes with her Hannah Montana soundtracks and her album off from Hannah Montana, “Breakout”. She also had a successful EP. But with her “Can’t Be Tamed”, she failed and took a break. Her comeback with “Bangerz” was highly successful due to extreme publicity despite its negativity.

Avril Lavigne- Avril became the next big thing when she started. She’s like set to change the landscape in female music scene which was previously led by Britney Spears. She still did well with “Under My Skin” and “Best Damn Thing”, but not like her debut “Let Go”. Her recent albums “Goodbye Lullaby” and self titled both performed moderately.

Hot “Baby” Songs during the last 20 Years

I heard a lot of songs during the last 20 years with the word “baby”. Those songs were not literally about an infant, rather, used to be a term of endearment to one’s partner. I created a list of “Baby” songs during the last 20 years, check below:

Mariah Carey- Always Be My Baby
Taken from the blockbuster album “Daydream”, this song is a like yoi are taking in a fresh air from Mariah, after the high vocal range along with Boyz II Men with “One Sweet Day”. This pop/R&B song became MC’s 11th chart-topper in her homeland, US. American Idol winner David Cook released his own version of it and was a hit in the Philippines.

Justin Bieber- Baby
This catchy song was Justin’s biggest hit to date despite peaking in lower position than his recent hit songs. It is even among the most viewed video ever in YouTube history. I may not be a Bieber fan but I agree that this song is catchy.

Beyonce / Sean Paul- Baby Boy
During Sean Paul’s success with “Get Busy”, Beyonce invited Sean in this sexual song “Baby Boy”. It became Bey’s second number 1 hit, and its Arabic sound influenced other R&B songs to incorporate the sound.

Gwen Stefani- Baby Don’t Lie
Supposedly her comeback after joining the panel of coaches on The Voice, this song hit the top 50. Her supposed new album is still in the works after about a year when this song was out. This time, the song is a cleaner one after the profanity-infused hit “Hollaback Girl”.

Christina Aguilera- Come on Over Baby (All I Want is You)
Initially, the word “baby” is not included in the title of the song until the revised the song and added “baby”. The song, though, is quite sexual despite knowing Christina as a teen star at that time.

No Doubt- Hey Baby
After the rock and ska sound incorporated in their previous works, the group went dancehall and reggae with this huge comeback hit from them. During this song’s success, another song with the same title was also heard on the radio.

Britney Spears- …Baby One More Time
Everybody sang “oh, baby, baby” during the peak of this song. It was Britney’s song that entered her to superstardom. It was listed as one of the most iconic pop songs and videos. Among those songs in this list, this song is the most successful “baby” songs.

Plies ft. Ne-Yo- Bust it Baby
Going hip-hop this time, this one is the only hit of Plies to hit the top 10. Thanks to the catchy chorus sang by Ne-Yo.

Jennifer Lopez- Baby I Love You
Created during the time Jennife Lopez is so much in love with Ben Affleck, it is clear that her “baby” here is Ben. The song was successful in Europe, particularly in UK.

Reinvention and Transformation of Female Artists of 2000s to present

Due to competition in music scene nowadays, female artists from 2000s reinvent themselves a number of times in less than 20 years. Even those artists from less than 10 years ago reinvented themselves several times.

Take a look at some of the female artists’ reinvention during the mentioned era. The list also includes three artists who debuted in 1999:

Britney Spears- She’s every female teens and young kids dreamed to become during her debut year. From a wholesome young and sweet lady from her “…Baby One More Time” and “Oops… I Did it Again” era to a sensual “Britney” to sexier and even went naked on “Womanizer” video. Her music also evolved from bubblegum pop to R&B, dance, EDM and pure pop.

Christina Aguilera- She’s being tagged by many as “Britney Spears clone” and a wholesome singer. However, she can sing better than Britney. After 3 years from her initial success, she went “dirtier” and abandoned her bubblegum image, as well as her music to R&B and sexual theme. With “Back to Basics”, she jumped back decades to more jazzy and blues sound. She innovated to a futuristic woman for “Bionic” which was met with lukewarm response.

Jennifer Lopez- She’s one of the female singers who never changed her persona. Her appearance and physical identity has been the same. Her music from a R&B singer changed to EDM pop with “Love?”, which remained until the present time.

P!nk- During her debut, she was known as a R&B pop singer until she broke out after more than a year to a rock star. From time to time, she sings pop, but her identity as rock star is always there which made her more successful.

Rihanna- She may be the “Queen of Reinvention” for this decade. She was a wholesome singer until she had gone bad. Her music ranged from R&B, pop and EDM. She changed her look in every album she made. She maintained her relevance in 10 years of her career.

Lady Gaga- She can be credited for changing the music landscape when EDM became famous. Her avant garde fashion became more daring. Recently, she toned down to a more serious performer in recent big events.

Taylor Swift- From an American Sweetheart image of a country singer from her first 3 LPs, she combined pop and country for “Red”. Recently, she completely crossed over to pop which made her a bigger star not just in US but also internationally.

R&B Hits and Saxophones

I turned on the FM radio when two songs played consecutively with saxophone parts being emphasized. Yes, we heard saxophone recently from pop songs from Katy Perry like “Last Friday Night” and Lady Gaga’s hit “Edge of Glory”. But the lists here were those R&B songs with saxophone parts. Honestly, I found these songs very similar because of saxophone but it was very effective because it is the most remembered parts of the songs.

Jennifer Lopez-Get Right
Rewinding back 10 years ago, we heard this tune from Jennifer Lopez from radio and music videos. It was also used by NBA. And what can you remember from this song? Saxophone which you can hear from the very start of the song. It turned to be a big hit worldwide while peaked lower in the States. By the way, yhe usage of saxophone was a sample from a song.

Jason Derulo- Talk Dirty
This is one of the memorable tunes with saxophone parts which was heard in every chorus. Just like “Get Right”, the song also featured a sample. It turned out to be a huge hit worldwide including top 3 position stateside

Ariana Grande and Iggy Azalea- Problem
If you think this song and “Talk Dirty” was created by the same writers and producers, then you are wrong. When the song was released and I heard it on YouTube, “Talk Dirty” came to my mind. Saxophone was first heard at the beginning of the song then Iggy started to talk. The song became of the best sellers of 2014.

Fifth Harmony- Worth It
This has been Fifth Harmony’s breakthrough hit elsewhere, thanks to the saxophone part. It is the most distinct part of the song and yes, one of its creators also co-wrote “Talk Dirty”.

Redfoo- New Thang
This song came out last year but I just heard it this year. It’s been receiving heavy airplays in FM radios and heard as background in variety shows. Saxophone is the most distinct part of this song. Well, it’s no different from the songs mentioned above. The song has catchy chorus part though.

From a teen pop star who broke the charts in 1999 and turned raunchy in 2002. Well, Christina has sold over 100 million records according to a post in her website. She’s often seen on TV recently.

She’s very successful in Spanish speaking country until she decided to crossover English album released in 2001 through “Laundry Service” which sold millions worldwide and even multi-platinum in non-Spanish speaking counties. Her most notable song recently was “Waka Waka”.

10 Male and Female Duets of the Last 20 Years

When a male and female singer intertwined in a song, they can make a good love song. Hopeless romantic people fall in love with these songs which contributes to their successes. However, there are some duets about broken hearts.

10. Ricky Martin and Christina Aquilera- Nobody Wants to Be Lonely

When you’re longing for someone you love, then this will be a good song for you. It’s Latin power when the two artists as Latin roots. As expected, it was huge in Spanish-speaking countries. It was huge in Asia too.

9. Mariah Carey ft. Joe and 98 Degrees- Thank God I Found You

Mariah did several duets before, while in this song, she’s with Joe and included boyband 98 Degrees to sing in the chorus. This song reminded me of a song by Asian singers, Jackie Cheung and Philippines’ Regine Velasquez because of similar melody of the chorus. Still, this number 1 song Mariah is good to listen to and fall in love to its message.

8. Jennifer Lopez ft. LL Cool J- All I Have

This rap-sung collab from J.Lo and LL may be a sad love but it fits to be in this list. It was about leaving despite loving the person because of mistreatment from the partner. It was number 1 in the charts during first quarterof 2003.

7. Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran- Everything has Changed

It’s romantic when a girl and a guy can play guitar and made a great folk, pop, country love song. Taylor and Ed did a pretty good job with this UK top ten hit.

6. R. Kelly and Celine Dion- I’m Your Angel

This can be considered as a holiday song since this was released during the last quarter of 1998 and included in Celine’s holiday album. But this song is a promise of protection for loved ones. It was huge in US during the holidays.

5. Nelly ft. Kelly Rowland- Dilemma

Falling in love with another one despite in a relationship with someone? This song talks about that. Well, that’s Kelly’s dilemma. The song went to number 1 elsewhere in the world.

4. Pink ft. Nate Ruess-Just Give Me a Reason

This is a great love song about learning to love again despite all the flaws. The combination of Pink’s strong voice and Nate’s fragile voice is perfect. It has dominated the charts and radio and became like an anthem to many.

3. Beyonce ft. R. Kelly- If I Were a Boy (Remix)

It’s not the usual love song you hear, as it is about a relationship of a woman with a man and reversing her role as a man and how to treat the woman. R. Kelly answered in this great duey remix of the song.

2. Alicia Keys and Usher- If I Ain’t Got You

This is one of the best love songs released in 2004. Before Usher invited Alicia for “My Boo”, Alcia took Usher’s assistance to do the male part for this song’s remix. The song talks about everything in this world is nothing without her or his love.

1. Mariah Carey and Brian McKnight- Whenever You Call

This song was not released as an official single but reach the airwaves of some Asian countries. It was a solo of Mariah in the album version, however, recorded as a duet with Brian McKnight since it was co-written by him. It sounds better as a duet with this “I’ll Be There”-esque song. The reason why I picked this as number one because of its lovely lyrics and vocals of the 2 artists.

Top Remix Albums

Changing some parts of song can be a good thing and eventually becomes a source of income for some artists. It is what we call remixes. Most remixes we hear were remade for club plays. People can dance with songs originally were ballads. With the help of technology as done by DJs, songs can sound faster. But that’s not always the case. Many songs will sound hipper through adding rap parts. It became popular in early 1990s which one of the most remarkable change happened through Mariah Carey’s hit “Fantasy” when she hired ODB to rap in the song. It helped the song and parent album’s success.

A song can likely be changed completely and the title can be retained and claim it’s a remix version. An example was Jennifer Lopez’s  “I”m Real”. The fast pop original version turned into a mid-tempo hip-hop version.

Remix albums also came to existence, many became hits, while others performed moderately. Some of these artists were below.

Madonna- You Can Dance

This is one of the best selling remix albums. Past songs of Madonna became more suitable for club plays.

Michael Jackson- Blood on the Dance Floor (History in the Mix)

Considered the most successful remix album when it sold over 6 million worldwide. The songs were mostly remixed version of songs from his album “History”.

Jennifer Lopez-J to tha L.O.- The Remixes

The album featured the totally revamped “I’m Real” and the new version of chart-topper “Ain’t it Funny”. It eventually became the first number one remix album ever.

Linkin Park- Reanimation

Released during remix albums is a trend, Linkin Park remixed their “Hybrid Theory” songs which ended as the fastest selling remix album based on first week sales.

P. Diddy- We Invented the Remix

This became second to Jennifer Lopez to top Billboard 200. It just propelled 2 Billboard top 10 hits, an evidence of the album’s success.

Justin Bieber- Never Say Never- The Remixes

Justin Bieber’s “My World” had an EP, 2.0, acoustic and of course, a remix version. It was one of those most successful remix albums when it topped Billboard 200 and was released during the height of his album’s success.

Some facts from Wikipedia.

Artists’ Comeback Trial

There were a number of successful artists attempted to make a comeback but it was a struggle to release new records. Competition is the major reason why these artists have a difficult time to come up with new projects. Since digital downloads and streaming is the trend in music nowadays, releasing digital singles without clear decision whether to put a new album. Eventually, few artists released an album. However, most of these artists’ attempt did not succeed.

Here are some of the artists who made a trial and released an album:

Mariah Carey

Despite being one of the biggest female artists ever, making a comeback for Mariah hasn’t been easy. The “Glitter” era was one of her disappointing moment which she made comeback for “Charmbracelet”  which also met with negative response from critics and fans. Nevertheless, she made a comeback in 2005 which she regained her superstar status. Two albums followed with underwhelming sales. Then recently, she tried releasing a single called “Triumphant” which eventually did not appear in her album. Her album was also postponed several times and until its released, it flopped.

Jennifer Lopez

Jennifer Lopez had a flop album called “Brave” in 2007. She is supposed to make a comeback but was shelved. She signed  to other record label and had successful comeback which was was heightened by the success of worldwide hit “On the Floor”. After her compilation album, she released “Live it Up ” which is intended for a new album. The single did not appear in the album (A.K.A.) which also flopped in sales.

The following were the artists who release singles, but without proper album:

Fergie

She became huge when she took a brief break from Black Eyed Peas and released her multi-platinum seller “The Dutchess” and 5 multi-million selling singles. After huge comeback with Black Eyed Peas, she took a break from the limelight. Last year, she decided to release a new single called “L.A. Love (La, La) with anticipation from fans with a new album. The album was successful as it entered the Billboard top 20 and UK top 5, but did not reach the success of her past singles. An album was not released yet.

Gwen Stefani

Shortly after Fergie’s single release, Gwen Stefani also released her comeback single, the ska/ reggae infused “Baby Don’t Lie”. The song had a strong start but quickly dropped off the charts. She said she is still working for the new album but didn’t confirm if “Baby…” will be in it. Gwen had recently enjoyed her stint in The Voice.

Jonas Brothers

The siblings’ fans waited for a proper release of their album which was preceded by their single “Pom Poms”. In the end, the album was shelved and pursued solo projects. Its member Nick Jonas is currently enjoying his solo success.

Rap-Sung Collaborations

It started out in the 90s when singers and rappers work together to form a song. A singer may invite a rapper for a rap part of a song or the other way around. Together, they can form a good melody which became a formula for a hit song.

Below is my list of 10 rap-sung collaborations:

10. Beyonce ft. Jay-Z- Crazy in Love

The couple first collaborated when Destiny’s Child appeared in Jay-Z’s song until the two worked together for “03 Bonnie & Clyde” (not on this list) and finally in this song, “Crazy in Love”. The horn sample dominates the entire song and the rap part is catchy and I can’t think how it’s like without it.

9. Nelly ft. Kelly Rowland- Dilemma

Nelly was known for catchy rapping. I mean his way of rapping creates melody especially heard in this song. Kelly Rowland’s part, though, made the song a bigger hit because of its melody.

8. Eminem & Rihanna- Love the Way You Lie

When bad boy rapper meets good girl gone bad singer, it will result to a great collaboration especially in a song about going through a difficult relationship. The huge collaboration resulted into huge success after achieving multi-platinum certification.

7. Fergie ft. Ludacris- Glamorous

What I love about this song is its smooth R&B sound. The rap is good enough to complete the song. Well, it just became Fergie’s second  number one hit.

6. Twista ft. Kanye West and Jamie Foxx- Slow Jamz

This became one of the rap/R&B hits in 2004. I liked the song when I first heard it on radio. The sampling of Luther Vandross’ song made it more effective.

5. Ja Rule ft. Ashanti- Always on Time

Ja Rule always made effective songs during 2000-2003. Her collaboration with Jennifer Lopez and Ashanti were the most notable especially this song. Anyway, what made this song a hit was the catchy chorus.

4. Usher and Alicia Keys- My Boo

Many of you might think there’s no rapper in this song. Nevertheless, there’s rap part of the song done by Alicia Keys after Usher’s intro. It’s a beautiful mid-tempo love song that’s pleasing to listen to.

3. Black Eyed Peas ft. Justin Timberlake- Where’s the Love?

Justin may not have been properly credited in this song but the chorus is the life of the song along with its wonderful lyrics. It eventually became huge back in 2003.

2. Jennifer Lopez ft. Ja Rule- I’m Real (Remix)

The original version of the song is good but the remix version is better. I love how they sing and rap alternately in every line. It was huge at the charts back then.

1. Mariah Carey ft. ODB- Fantasy (Remix)

This is one of the biggest rap-sung collaboration of 1990s. It was also one of the first remixes of hip-hop and R&B. It proved that rap and singing can be effective in music industry.
