Green Day- American Idiot: Top 10 Singles in US and UK

Green Day- American Idiot
United States- Green Day came back with a bang through the album “American Idiot’, that aside from being a number 1 album, it sold million, thus became their second biggest selling album ever. Green Day had never reached the top 10 of Billboard Hot 100 before until they released this album “American Idiot”. The band had released at least five official singles from the album and see how they made it to the top 10:
Boulevard of Broken Dreams- #2
Wake Me Up When September Ends- #6
Two of Green Day’s five released singles from “American Idiot” album went to top 10. Their song “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” was their biggest hit when it peaked at number 2 and even gone 2x platinum by RIAA. “Wake Me Up When September Ends” which peaked at number 6 was platinum. They had a top 20 hit with “Holiday” at number 19, while the title track at number 61.

United Kingdom- Green Day achieved a new heights in United Kingdom with their album “American Idiot”. It even scored at least three top 10 hits. Look below which songs are those:
American Idiot- #3
Boulevard of Broken Dreams- #5
Wake Me Up When September Ends- #8
Green Day, for the first time, scored three top 10 singles from an album. Their highest peak is obviously “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” at number 3. But their other top 10 singles “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” and “Wake Me Up September Ends” were more notable hits. “Holiday” and “Jesus of Suburbia” had peaked at number 11 and 17, respectively. Thus, they scored five top 20 hits.

Green Day scored more hits from this album “American Idiot”, which they never achieve before. Their biggest hit in the US has been “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” at number 2, while on UK, it was “American Idiot” at number 3. However, I had chosen “Wake Me Up When September Ends” because of its meaning and it was a very remarkable song from them.

Music 10 G’s: Gavin Degraw to Get Busy

1. Gavin Degraw
He is such a talented guy who deserves more attention. He was just underrated. But if you hear his music, they were great. My favorite songs from him were the ballad “More than Anyone” and “Not Over You”.

2. Gorillaz
They were a British virtual band and can only be seen on music videos and performances in cartoon motion. Their first album was self-titled and it became multi-platinum.

3. Gangnam Style
It is a song by Korean star PSY. The song was a worldwide hit and became a dance craze. PSY also achieved the most viewed video on YouTube for reaching more than 2 billion.

4. Greatest Hits
This is a general album as many artists used that title being a compilation of their hits.

5. Girls Aloud
They were one of the most successful girl groups in United Kingdom. They had scored a bunch of top 10 hits there, and Cheryl Cole formerly a part of that group.

6. Green Day
They were a band who became first popular in 1990’s. They are able to achieve success again in mid-2000’s via the alb “American Idiot” which featured singles such as the title track, “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” and “Wake Me Up When September Ends”.

7. Gwyneth Paltrow
Yeah, she is an actress but she is a singer too. Remember when she had gone to Glee? Before that, she was seen on the film “Duets” with Huey Lewis.

8. Gentleman
If there’s “Gangnam Style” on the list, I also included “Gentleman” by PSY. It is also a hit and gained loads of views. However, it didn’t match the success of “Gangnam Style”.

9. Genie in a Bottle
This was the song which made Christina Aguilera popular. It was from her self-titled debut album, which also featured big hits including “What a Girl Wants”.

10. Get Busy
This was the most popular song by dancehall artist Sean Paul. After this song, he achieved success with “Like Glue” and “Baby Boy”, a song by Beyonce.

Insomniac (album)

Album’s Singles Review: Green Day “Dookie”

This is not the first album from punk rock band Green Day, but this is their first album to dominate the charts. The punk rock album has lots of tracks with different stories. Through this album, Green Day became one of the most successful rock bands around. It has been successful worldwide including America where it sold 10 million, according to Soundscan. We had a cassette tape of this album before as my brother is a fan of them.

“Longview” is a punk rock song which starts at a slower pace and gets energetic at its chorus. The theme of the song is somewhat explicit. It became a top 30 hit in United Kingdom. In America, it performed well in alternative charts.
Rate: 4.5 out of 10

Welcome to Paradise
This song is already in their album “Kerplunk”  but they included it in “Dookie” which it was eventually released as a single. It became a top 20 hit in Britain.
Rate: 5.25 out of 10

Basket Case
“Basket Case” is one of the best rock hit and memorable song by Green Day. It was their first ever UK top ten hit, while it was a number one rock hit in America. I remember this song was sang by Avril Lavigne her concert. It was even performed by other bands too as it is an iconic rock song.
Rate: 8.5 out of 10

When I Come Around
In this song, it was a bit slower but it is very melodic. This is my favorite single from the album and it reminded me of when I was younger watching MTV. Vocalist Billy Joe had admitted it is a song about his ex-girlfriend. The song has charted in different countries globally.
Rate: 9.25 out of 10

“She” is the last single for “Dookie”. It only charted in component charts. It was slightly a good song.

Battle of Same Song Title: Madonna vs Green Day / NSYNC vs Avril Lavigne

The battles are quite odd as a pop diva battles with a rock band. The second battle was between a pop/rock female star against a pop boyband. Check the battles below:

Madonna vs Green Day

During the early part of her career, Madonna released her “Holiday” song which became her first ever big hit internationally. In the US, it was their first top 20 hit peaking at 16th. In the UK, it peaked at high second place. The song helped her album greatly.

Green Day made their own “Holiday” song which was released in 2005. The punk rock song though failed to enter the top ten in countries, though it reached the top twenty in some countries which included America and Unite Kingdom.

Madonna- Holiday
Melody and Lyrics- 3.25 / Success- 3.25= 6.5

Green Day- Holiday
Melody and Lyrics- 2.75 / Success- 3.0= 5.75

Winner: The Queen of Pop trampled the rock band as Madonna scored higher against Green Day in this “Holiday” song battle.

NSYNC vs Avril Lavigne

Released as the last official single from NSYNC’s last full length album, “Girlfriend” had its remixed version with successful rapper Nelly. Both versions were good, though the remixed helped the song’s success. It went to top ten almost all of the countries it entered. The song talks about telling the girl to be his girlfriend who was in a relationship with an unloving boyfriend.

Avril Lavigne reached a new peak of her career through her own “Girlfriend” song. The pop rock song went to number in majority of the countries it entered and was her most successful single. The song talks about this girl who wants to be the guy’s girlfriend. In its remix version, it featured Lil Mama

NSYNC- Girlfriend (ft. Nelly for the remix)
Melody and Lyrics- 3.75 / Success- 3.75= 7.5

Avril Lavigne- Girlfriend (ft. Lil Mama for the remix)
Melody and Lyrics- 3.75 / Success-4.25= 8.0

Winner: Both were big hit songs but Avril Lavigne defeated NSYNC in this “Girlfriend” battle.

10 Songs With “Life”

“Life” is such a wonderful gift that we have from God. It is also used in songs and has a lot of meaning. Here’s the list I created which are the songs with “life”

The Fray- How to Save a Life
Wanting to save a “life”, this song might explain. It became The Fray’s biggest and first hit anywhere else. It was also used in “Grey’s Anatomy” TV show.

Evanescence- Bring Me to Life
When it feels you are dead and wanting someone to resurrect you to “life”. This song was very popular worldwide due to its hard rocking sound and haunting voice of Amy Lee.

Third Eye Blind- Semi-Charmed Life
It’s about a “life” you initially thought to be good but will bring you down. This song was a big hit accross America and Asia, as well.

Backstreet Boys- Larger than Life
What the guys’ fans did and gave for the success of the group made them larger than “life”. It went to top 10 in many countries but failed a top 20 position in the US.

Green Day- Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)
It’s like having this good “life” and enjoying it. This song became a hit in the second half of 1990’s.

Bon Jovi- It’s My Life
Wanting to be independent and doesn’t need other people’s opinions and just do what you want in your “life”. This song became a big comeback for the band in 2000.

The Beatles- In My Life
Reminiscing about your “life” back, this is a good song to listen to. I became one of the most known songs of the legendary band.

Ronan Keating- Life is a Rollercoaster
We may face some anxieties that makes “life” is like a rollercoaster. This song became a hit in Europe and Asia.

Elton John- Circle of Life
This song is about “life” and how it revolves. It was used as one of the main songs of the hit film and sountrack, “The Lion King”. It was a top 10 and 20 hit internationally.

Des’ree- Life
Apparently, it’s about “life”. Though, the lyrics was often criticized for some lines then. The song still became a hit in 1998.

Some facts from Wikipedia

Memorable Lines in Songs: Green Day

Green Day achieved success in mid-1990s. Their songs had tackled issues about life, society and a lot more. There are a number of love songs too.

When I Come Around
” No time to search the world around
Cause you know where I’ll be found”
The guy is assuring someone that whenever she needs him, he will just be around and know where she can find him.

Basket Case
” Sometimes I give myself the creeps
Sometimes my mind plays tricks on me”
It seems the guy is disturbed mentally and going through the rough times.

Walking Contradiction
” Standards set and broken all the time
Control the chaos behind a gun”
It was like rules are made but they were often broken and lawmakers were the first ones who breaks the law.

Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)
” Tattoos and memories and dead skin on trial
For what it’s worth it was worth all the while”
We may go through some tough moments in the past but there are still great moments worth remembering.

” Cause I want to be the minority
I don’t need your authority”
We sometimes chose to be in the minority and push for what’s right as they were often looked down.

Boulevard of Broken Dreams
” My shadow’s the only one that walks beside me
My shallow heart’s the only thing that’s beating”
The opening lines of the chorus of the song, we sometimes were alone and nobody’s with us. It’s like feeling very low and you want to get out of. This song led among the group’s songs.

Wake Me Up When September Ends
“Like my father’s come to pass
Seven years has gone so fast”
This is such a sad song, like when your father was gone even in years, you want to skip the same day or month of your father’s demise.

Know Your Enemy
” Silence is the enemy
Against your urgency”
We have some enemies that we don’t know and they were just like silent, but we should know them.
