Music 10 Fs: Fall Out Boy to Family Affair

1. Fall Out Boy
They were one of the great bands during the last 10 years. My favorite song of them was “Sugar, We’re Going Down”. Their recent hits were “Centuries” and “Uma Thurman”.

2. FOUR
It is the fourth album by British boyband One Direction. It was less successful than their previous albums, but it still can be considered as a hit. It scored two hit songs “Steal My Girl” and “Night Changes”.

3. Face Down
It is a song by rock band Red Jumpsuit Apparatus. It is a good song but I prefer the song “Your Guardian Angel”. I remember I always play thatng before.

4. Fifth Harmony
They were one of the popular girlbands today, aside from Little Mix. They were formed by Simon Cowell back then from the US version of X-Factor, just like One Direction and Little Mix, which both was formed in X-Factor UK Edition.

5. Funky Divas
It was the most notable album by R&B girl group En Vogue. It was very successful during the first half of 1990’s and featured the hits “My Lovin'(You’re Never Gonna Get It)” and “Free Your Mind”.

Top 5 Albums in My Playlist

Having a Spotify Premium account is such a blessing for music lovers that’s why I don’t mind paying a low subscription monthly since I can listen to songs and albums anytime I want. However, there are mainstream albums which I can’t listen on Spotify, particulary blockbuster albums like Taylor Swift’s “1989” and Adele’s “25”. So I just downloaded them online and I don’t have to go to the record stores to purchase it. Availing of music is already easier than ever before. As I look at my playlists, I listed down the albums that Iisten to lately. Here they are below, ranked from 5 to 1:

5. Florence and the Machine- How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful
I think this is one of the best albums in 2015. It is somewhat more spiritual and deep while Florence Welch’s voice remains so haunting. My favorite cuts from the album were “What Kind of Man” and the title track.

4. Justin Bieber- Purpose
I admit, I disliked Justin Bieber before. Even downloading this album, I am skeptical to do it because of his behavior before. But I still downloaded it to hear what he has to offer, and this album is far more better than his past songs for the maturity of sound, as well as the meaningful lyrics. My favorite tracks off the record were “Mark My Words” and “Company”.

3. Ed Sheeran- X
Still a big fan of this album despite being out for more than a year. Ed Sheeran is just an amazing singer, songwriter, and musician. He is sp deep with his songs. My favorite tracks from the album “Bloodstream” and “Thinking Out Loud”.

2. Coldplay- A Head Full of Dreams
I admit, I preferred Coldplay’s old melancholic rock sound. But people do gets tired of hearing the same music so they did some experimentation. I began to appreciate their sound when it changes. Their “Ghost Stories” album has become their full length record not to showcase their old sound and was more on pop, edm, electronic, synth and ambient. While their current album “A Head Full of Dreams” is their more adventurous record. My favorite cuts were “Everglow” and “Hymn for the Weekend”.

1. Adele- 25
Some people call it overrated but that’s what highly successful albums get. If she is good at telling her heartbreak story in “21”, the new one “25”, is like she’s talking to you and telling stories. You can feel it from her vocals and emotions being input in the songs. Her vocal prowess is just a bonus, the depth was even more showcased. My favorite tracks were “When We Were Young” and “All I Ask”.

Yearend Special: Top Groups of 2015

Music groups or bands colors the music industry which was led by solo artists. This year, groups or bands did a pretty good contribution in music too, here are some of them:

One Direction
One Direction can easily be declared as the top group this year. With “FOUR” released last November and secured multi-platinum status this year along with 2 top 40 songs, the British lads continued the streak despite Zayn left the group turning into quartet. They had released “Made in the A.M.” which already reached more than a million and two top 10 singles.

Maroon 5
Adam Levine’s group is doing very well. With “Maps” and the euphemism infused track “Animals”, their pop hit “Sugar” is one of the biggest singles this 2015.

Fifth Harmony
The girls are working really hard and despite a huge online fanbase, they failed a top 40 hit before until they made it this year through “Worth It”. It came from their top 5 album “Reflections”.

Florence and the Machine
The indie pop rock band led by Florence Welch had a cool sound this year with “How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful” which topped the albums chart recently.

Imagine Dragons
The band was one of the top rock bands during the recent years, and they did it again when they topped the rock charts with new effort.

50 Seconds of Summer
The young guys from Australia were back with their “Sounds Good Feels Good” album few weeks ago which had great sales and easily climbed to the top of LP charts.

Fron the raw sound of folk to more electric rock with “Wilder Mind”, the band from UK didn’t fail to reach the summit of albums chart.

Pentatonix
The acapella group is doing well not just with their videos but they also outsold Demi Lovato with their self-titled album as it was number 1 recently.

Walk the Moon
The band became known this year with “Shut Up and Dance” which was one of the biggest songs this 2015.

Echosmith
The indie pop rock band hit the top 20 during the second half of last year and they scored their second top 40 this top 20 with “Bright”.

Some Disappointing Grammy Snubs

Recently, the nominees for the most important music event, which is the Grammy Awards, was already announced. According to Billboard, the most nominations went to acclaimed rapper Kendrick Lamar, which followed by pop superstar Taylor Swift. As usual, there were many people gets disappointed with the results of nominations.

I have nothing against the board of Grammy because they have a panel who votes who will get nominated, likewise the winners. It’s not about popularity rather, as said a group decides who will win. Given that Taylor Swift got lots of nominations, I think she deserves it since the album is outstanding in quality apart from its popularity. Kendrick Lamar deserves it too as his album was generally praised by critics. But there are some great records which gained some respects and acclaims from music critics.

One of disappointing snubs was the zero nomination for Canadian pop star, Carly Rae Jepsen. She may not be at the Taylor Swift popularity level, however, her record was support. Her entire record (Emotion) contained 1980s inspired sound which is refreshing to the ears. I can’t even feel it’s a gimmick to incorporate such sound. Unlike other artists who incorporate retro sounds in their music, sounds more of a gimmick. Jepsen pulled the album out with quality retro sound.

Another disappointing result was the exclusion of Janet Jackson even from the minor categories. Her album “Unbreakable” is a lovely album. It was also well acclaimed by the critics for it unformulaic sound and her courage to put up a record that’s far from what we hear in current mainstream music. Yet, she was snubbed by the Grammy again.

Lana del Ray who often got rave reviews including her new hit record “Honeymoon”, but Grammy ignored her even a single nomination. I am not a fan of Lana but I kinda think her album was great just after first listen.

One Direction was always one of the big snubs yearly ever since they started. They were a staple yearly with successful records. Their music has grown matured. Also, this year would be their last year to release a record before going for a hiatus. Their record “FOUR” and this year’s single “Drag Me Down” was acclaimed, but Grammy has always been selfish to them.

One of the band that makes superb records was Florence and the Machine. I love their album “How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful” which surely many agrees. It was very much lauded and Florence’s gained so much respect with this record but Grammy doesn’t seem to give that respect.

Honestly, I don’t much rely on Grammys for great records. The award giving body is highly respected and very prestigious but they don’t speak for the entire music industry. Their lists of nominees was respected but for me, respects goes to all the artists who made great masterpieces that entertain people like me.

It was a light folk rock song that became a top 40 hit. This is my favorite song from their album too.

Mumford and Sons- Believe
Going alternative, when I first heard this song, the 2000s Coldplay came to my mind. It was a good effort and worth to listen to. It also hit the top 40 in official countdown and rock top 10 charts.

Elle King- Ex’s and Ohs
After being released last year, the song finally hit the top 10. The song was from actor Rob Schneider’s daughter which I never expected she wa his child.

This song was just catchy when I first heard it. It’s like the 1980s rock and indie rock and pop was infused into a good song. It was considered a certified hit.

James Bay- Hold Back the River
The British singer have such a unique voice and I heard it in this great pop rock tune. It was big hit in many territories which included his hometown UK.

Top 7 Female Band vocalist

It is rare to see female leading a band with male members. Oftentimes, they even made their band more successful since the camera is within them mostly than their bandmates playing the instruments. I listed some of these band vocalist who led their bands successfully.

Shirley Manson- From second half of 1990s, the band Garbage was led by this girl named Shirley who was also considered one of the top fashion icons as shown in some MTV shows. The band becane successful too scoring hits like “Milk”, “I Think I’m Paranoid, etc. They even sang the James Band hit “The World is Not Enough”. The secret to the band’s success? Of course it’s Shirley Manson.

Selena Gomez- Many of you might think she’s an artist of her own, but yes, she is now. Before? No. As we often hear ‘Selena Gomez and The Scene”‘, it’sa band which was led by Selena. It was a testament of Selena’s leadership as the band scored multiple top 10 albums and top 40 hits.

Dolores O’ Riordan- This lady have such a beautiful and rare voice. Among all the ladies in this list, she has the most beautiful voice for me. Well, she successfully led the band during the 1990s and created beautiful hit songs such as “Linger”, “Zombie” and a lot more. Their album “No Need to Argue” is among the best selling albums during the first half of 1990s. Thanks to Dolores who’s very much credited for their success.

Gwen Stefani- Apart from successful solo career, Gwen led No Doubt successfully as well. Their album “Tragic Kingdom” is among the biggest sellers for 1997, while big comeback came in 2002 after a moderate success of “Return of the Saturn”. The band never broke up, just in state of hiatus and she remained the band’s vocalist.

Florence Welch- One of the acclaimed bands recently, Florence & the Machine led by Florence Welch sold millions of albums. My favorite song from this band is “Dog Days are Over”. Undeniably, Florence have a beautiful voice which led the band’s success.

Hailey Williams- From the hard-rocking of “Misery Business” to a light and fun sound of “Ain’t it Fun”, the band scored many hit songs and hot selling albums. Hailey was also featured in songs by B.O.B. with “Airplanes” which was big hit, and Zedd. Well, she can make it as solo artist, yet she loves her band.

Amy Lee- Whether rock or ballad, her voice is very haunting that it was like taking you to the Gothic life. I wonder where she is now, but hoping for a new album of Evanescence that will take you back to their “Fallen” era.
