European Solo Singers Who Reached the Top 10 in the US (1995-1999)

Here were the European solo singers who broke the American market through entering the US top 10 singles charts:

Seal (United Kingdom)

Seal already scored hits in the period 1990-1994. While from 1995-1999, he scored 1 top 10 hit through the “Space Jam” theme song “Fly Like an Eagle” which peaked at the bottom 10. That’s his last US top 10 though.

Donna Lewis (United Kingdom)

Donna Lewis is one of the artist who had success with their first ever single. Her pop song “I Love You Always Forever” became a US number 2 hit for several weeks. She is considered as one-hit wonder there despite reaching the Hot 100 with another song. She was featured in a soundtrack right after.

Eric Clapton (United Kingdom)

After hitting #2 with “Tears in Heaven” in 1992, Eric Clapton returned to the US top 10 in 1996 through the Grammy award winning and number 5 hit “Change the World” which was co-penned by top producer and songwriter thenĀ  Babyface.

Elton John (United Kingdom)

Elton John is among the most popular UK artists of all time spanning career success in every decade. From 1995-1999, he only scored one top 10 but it can’t underestimated for spending 14 weeks at number and scored the biggest selling single ever worldwide which stands to 33 million with the single “Something About the Way You Look Tonight / Candle in the Wind 1997”. It was a tribute to the late Princess Diana.

Robyn (Sweden)

Robyn is one of the Swedish singer who achieved success in the US. She actually scored 2 top 10 hit singles in the US with “Do You Know What it Takes” (#7), and “Show Me Love” (#7). Her album charted as well.

Eagle Eye Cherry (Sweden)

Eagle Eye Cherry, the brother of 1980’s hit singer Neneh Cherry, tried music and he had some remarkable success. In 1997, his first single “Save Tonight” charted worldwide including the US peaking at number 5.

European solo artists also had difficult time to create hits. During 1990 to 1994, there were lots of hits released solo artists. Here are those artists:

Phil Collins (United Kingdom)
Phil Collins is one of the biggest British artists who cracked the American market during 1980’s as well as early 1990’s. In the period 1990-1994, he had scored 3 Billboard top 10 hit. Those were the hits: “I Wish it Would Rain Down” (#3), “Something Happened on the Way to Heaven” (#4), and “Do You Remember?” (4).


Sinead O’Connor (Ireland)
Sinead O’ Connor is one of the few Irish acts who had hits in the US. However, she is considered as a one-hit wonder after reaching number with “Nothing Compares to U”.


George Michael (United Kingdom)
George Michael became successful in the US during the 1980’s and 1990’s. He had a lot of hits during 1990-1994. His top 10 hits included “Freedom! ’90” (#8) and “Too Funky (#10) as well as number 1 hits “Praying for Time” and his duet with Elton John “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me”.


Lisa Stansfield (United Kingdom)
Lisa Stansfield had a hit in 1989 but in 1990 and 1991, she had 2 number 1 hits which were “You Can’t Deny It” and “All Woman”.


Rick Astley (United Kingdom)
Rick Astley is one of the top British male artists during the second half of 19980’s. Nevertheless, he had his last US top 10 in 1990 via the number 7 hit, “Cry for Help”.


Seal (United Kingdom)
Seal achieved success in the US with 2 top ten singles. They were “Crazy” (#7) and the number 1 hit and his biggest hit “Kiss from a Rose”.

Eric Clapton (United Kingdom)
Eric Clapton is a legendary rock artists from several decades ago. His solo success continued in 1990s as from 1990 to 1994, he scored 1 big hit which is “Tears in Heaven” (#2).


Elton John (United Kingdom)
Elton John’ s success spans in a number of decades. In 1990-1994, he scored 3 top 10 hits. He topped the charts with George Michael for “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down On Me”. He achieved success to with “The One” (#9) and “The Lion King” theme “Can You Feel the Love Tonight?” (#4).

Since there are a lot of chaos in this “world” we live in, there are a lot of songs written about its current situation. Nevertheless, some songs were written that says how beautiful the world is, while other sense was written about it. Here are some of the songs with “world”:

Michael Jackson- Heal the World
Michael sees how cruelty and abuse is happening in this “world” and urging everyone to help heal it. The song has been a worldwide hit, but only peaked inside Billboard’s top 30.

Michael Jackson- You Rock My World
There are some people who are gorgeous enough to rock our “world”. This comeback hit from Michael Jackson did well in the charts but not as successful as expected for a comeback.

Tears for Fears- Mad World
This is such a mad “world” and you want to escape from it. The song from the British band became successful in many countries and even performed by Adam Lambert in American Idol then.

Garbage- The World is Not Enough
This is just another James Bond song with the same title. The song didn’t perform much in music charts, though had significant success in some countries.

Outkast- The Whole World
The whole “world” wants the same certain things at times. This hip-hop song from the duo made a top 20 entry in the US and UK, though performed better in other territories.

Duran Duran- Ordinary World
You might have lose someons in this “world”, but you try to survive. This ballad became one of Duran Duran’s finest songs. It went to top 10 in many countries.

It is just one of the best ballads in early ’90s. It is the theme song of the hit Disney animated film “Alladin”.
