Music 10 E’5: Ed Sheeran to Empire State of Mind

1. Ed Sheeran
I am a fan of Ed Sheeran since his “+” days. He achieved more success with “x” though. Funny how I read some memes saying, if you are really a fan, name another song from Ed Sheeran other than “Thinking Out Loud”. Lol!

6. Every Breath You Take
This is a song by The Police which was sang by its member Sting. Puff Daddy released a song “I’ll Be Missing You” which the chorus was sampled from “Every Breath You Take”.

7. Eve

Album’s Singles Review: “+” by Ed Sheeran

Ed Sheeran had released this album “+” first in few countries including United Kingdom, but eventually released worldwide. Upon first listen, I can sense the voice of Jason Mraz on his vocals and songs. However, Ed has more depth and more serious with his songs. In this album, you can hear indie-pop and folk on it. The album became a big hit worldwide. In United States, it reached number 5 and now certified platinum. While in UK, it was a chart-topper and now at 6x platinum.

The A Team
“The A Team” was the first single of Ed Sheeran. It is an acoustic folk song which, according to Ed, was about prostitute addicted to a certain addictive drug. The song was a worldwide hit and it peaked at number 3 in UK and became his first top 20 in US.

It is my favorite single from the album too

Top 5 Albums in My Playlist

Having a Spotify Premium account is such a blessing for music lovers that’s why I don’t mind paying a low subscription monthly since I can listen to songs and albums anytime I want. However, there are mainstream albums which I can’t listen on Spotify, particulary blockbuster albums like Taylor Swift’s “1989” and Adele’s “25”. So I just downloaded them online and I don’t have to go to the record stores to purchase it. Availing of music is already easier than ever before. As I look at my playlists, I listed down the albums that Iisten to lately. Here they are below, ranked from 5 to 1:

5. Florence and the Machine- How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful
I think this is one of the best albums in 2015. It is somewhat more spiritual and deep while Florence Welch’s voice remains so haunting. My favorite cuts from the album were “What Kind of Man” and the title track.

4. Justin Bieber- Purpose
I admit, I disliked Justin Bieber before. Even downloading this album, I am skeptical to do it because of his behavior before. But I still downloaded it to hear what he has to offer, and this album is far more better than his past songs for the maturity of sound, as well as the meaningful lyrics. My favorite tracks off the record were “Mark My Words” and “Company”.

3. Ed Sheeran- X
Still a big fan of this album despite being out for more than a year. Ed Sheeran is just an amazing singer, songwriter, and musician. He is sp deep with his songs. My favorite tracks from the album “Bloodstream” and “Thinking Out Loud”.

2. Coldplay- A Head Full of Dreams
I admit, I preferred Coldplay’s old melancholic rock sound. But people do gets tired of hearing the same music so they did some experimentation. I began to appreciate their sound when it changes. Their “Ghost Stories” album has become their full length record not to showcase their old sound and was more on pop, edm, electronic, synth and ambient. While their current album “A Head Full of Dreams” is their more adventurous record. My favorite cuts were “Everglow” and “Hymn for the Weekend”.

1. Adele- 25
Some people call it overrated but that’s what highly successful albums get. If she is good at telling her heartbreak story in “21”, the new one “25”, is like she’s talking to you and telling stories. You can feel it from her vocals and emotions being input in the songs. Her vocal prowess is just a bonus, the depth was even more showcased. My favorite tracks were “When We Were Young” and “All I Ask”.

Popular Artists Wins on Grammy Awards

I have been watching Grammy for several years and it seems the winners tonight don’t seem like who usually wins in Grammy Awards. Popularity is not an assurance to win the Grammys as winners are determined through the decision of the panel of judges. Even the most popular singer in a year don’t even win a minor category. During the 1990’s, the Spice Girls never achieved nominations. While Backstreet Boys and NSYNC who became extremely popular during their heydays never won an award. Britney Spears did not even win an award on her earlier success. She got to win a minor award after several years in the industry.

Justin Bieber never won an award until this year after winning for the song “Where are You Now” as a featured artist.  One Direction was never even nominated despite the critical acclaim in their recent records. Ariana Grande got nominations last year but didn’t receive an award.
With the major categories, Best New Artist, Song of the Year, Album of the Year and Record of the Year, it seems those were not into pop or tennybopper music. But this year, those I predicted to win lost. While some of those that are my choices won. I had written my prediction and choices recently. The reason why I came out with those predictions because Grammys used to choose those who are underrated artists. Popular artists often defeated by less popular artists but it was not the case this year. In fact, with those four major categories, the winners were those popular.
Let’s start with Best New Artist, my choice is Meghan  Trainor. She is even the most mainstreamly successful among those nominated.I predicted James Bay to win, but the winner ended up as Meghan Trainor.
With Song of the Year, I expected and predicted Kendrick Lamar’s “Alright”, however, it went to my choice, Ed Sheeran. Knowing Lamar’s number of nominations, I expected him to win.
The Album of the Year winner is Taylor Swift with “1989”. I expected Chris Stapleton’s “Traveller” as it is generally acclaimed while Taylor shifted to pop music. Anyway, it is Taylor’s second time to win the category.
The Record of the Year winner this year was “Uptown Funk” by Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars. I expected D’Angelo to win with “Really Love” but ended up to the upbeat song. My choice though was “Thinking Out Loud”. Good for “Uptown Funk” since it is the number one song of 2015.
Despite not winning the major categories, Kendrick Lamar won multiple awards. Congratulations to all the winners.

My Prediction and Choice Winners for Grammy Awards 2016 (Album of the Year and Record of the Year)

Another two major categories of Grammy Awards is Album of the Year and Record of the Year. Here’s my choice and prediction to win in these two categories:

Album of the Year
“Sound & Color” by Alabama Shakes
The album is the first US number album by the band. It peaked inside the top 10 in other countries as well.
“To Pimp a Butterfly” by Kendrick Lamar
It went to number one in a number of countries including the US. Currently, it already went platinum.
“Traveller” by Chris Stapleton
Initially debuted at the top 15, the album went to number one after Chris’ performance in CMA. The album was acclaimed by fans and critics.
“1989” by Taylor Swift
The album has been a blockbuster worldwide after scoring hit songs from it and the turning point of Swift becoming a pop star.
“Beauty Behind the Madness” by The Weeknd
The Weeknd already had high chart positions before but this album became his breakthrough. It went to number one and gone multiplatinum.
Choice: “1989”, this is an amazing pop album from a former country singer.
Prediction: “Traveller”, the album has been a highly recommended album.

Record of the Year
“Really Love” by D’Angelo and the Vanguard
The song was highly acclaimed despite not charting in major charts elsewhere.
“Uptown Funk” by Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars
This is the biggest hit worldwide last year after breaking records in sales.
“Thinking Out Loud” by Ed Sheeran
One of the two songs also nominated for Song of the Year. This song was a hit globally.
“Blank Space” by Taylor Swift
One of the several nominations of Taylor Swift. Aside from Ed Sheeran, this song was also a nominee for Song of the Year.
“Can’t Feel My Face” by The Weeknd
One of the number one singles of 2015, it is one of the contenders to be the winner.
Choice: “Thinking Out Loud”, he was already nominated multiple times last year without wins, and I want him to win this year.
Prediction: “Really Love”, the song was highly acclaimed by the critics, and Grammy loves underperforming songs.

Catch the Grammy Awards tomorrow to know the winners.

Successful Male Singers Who Wrote for Fellow Successful Singers

There are many successful male singers today who had written for their fellow artists, which also help build the careers for those artists or at least scored another hit for them. Here are some of these successful male singers who contributed such songs for fellow singers:

Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran is currently one of the wonderful singers today. He had scored big hits off his first and second albums. He had written majority of his songs which has shown his musicianship and talent. Aside from writing his own songs, he also wrote for other artists too. He had written or co-wrote songs for a number of One Direction songs, which included the UK charttopper “Little Things”, as well as Taylor Swift’s hit “Everything Has Changed”, which he was featured too. The most recent one he co-wrote was “Love Yourself” by Justin Bieber and now a huge hit.

Songs Better Left to the Original Singers

There were a lot of hit songs nowadays that was often covered either by another or fellow manistream artist by the original singers, while mostly though were heard in YouTube. I used to listen to cobers on YouTube and Boyce Avenue has became one of by favorites. They had nailed a lot of songs in their own version, though, I couldn’t agree that they did very well in ALL of their covers. I heard a lot of cover songs lately on YouTube buy I wasn’t impressed in a lot of them. I couldn’t feel the sincerity in their versions and I think better leave those songs to the original singers.

Here are some of the songs being covered which should better left to the original singers:

Adele- Hello
I heard a cover verrsion of this song played on FM radio. I alao heard a lot of version of it on YouTube. However, I never heard a single version that went close to Adele’s version.  When doing a cover of any Adele song, make sure to even go close, if not match, to Adele’s.

Christina Perri- Jar of Hearts
This song had lots of cover versions on YouTube. I am not that impressed with their versions. I cannot feel the anger of Christina Perri in this song from those cover version. In fact, the video I had seen when a video did the song into American Sign Language is even more effective than those cover versions.

Sia- Chandelier
To sing this song, make sure you have a high voice because of the high notes it requires. But it shouldn’t be all about high notes. You should feel the pain the original siner felt when she sang this as it is based on her personal experience. That’s what’s lacking in those cover versions. You cannot feel the sincerity in their versions, aside from loud vocals which becomes irritating to listen to. Well, Sia had such a wonderful and unique voice. It’s only her who can sing the song beautifully and emotion catching.

Ed Sheeran- Thinking Out Loud
This song was often covered too. Since it is a love song, it can surely makes you fall in love and I felt that from Ed Sheeran’s version. Recently, I heard a cover version on the radio and I was annoyed. It was a female version and it should catch me if, for example, the girl is singing that song to me, but it lacks sincerity.  I could not feel the love in that version.

10 Songs With “Think”

Several songs with “think” were mostly about “thinking” of someone that you love. But it varies at times. In this list, it includes songs with “thinking”. Here are some of the songs with “think”:

Garbage- I Think I’m Paranoid

When you are with your partner, but you are “thinking” of another person. This song a big top 40 hit for Katy Perry being her third consecutive hit.
