Music 10 D’s: Daft Punk to Drive

1. Daft Punk
They were producers, songwriters and artists who are very known for their recent hit “Get Lucky” with Pharrell Williams. Two decades ago, they released the hit “Around the World”.

2. D’you Know What I Mean
Oasis had released this very lengthy song “D’you Know What I Mean” from the record breaking album “Be Here Now”. This was just like yesterday, but in fact, it is almost a 20-year old song.

3. Dookie
The breakthrough album of one of the biggest bands Green Day. According to reports, it had sold more than 20 million, their biggest seller before “American Idiot in 2004.

4. Dancing Queen
Who doesn’t know this song? It is the signature song of the Swedish group ABBA. It was covered by a bunch of artists, and can still be heard nowadays. A proof that it is a timeless hit.

5. Dashboard Confessional
Dashboard Confessional is one of my favorite bands. My favorite song from them was “Stolen” because of its good lyrics and melody. It was followed by “Vindicated”.

6. Dangerously in Love
Beyonce’s first ever solo album, which was her biggest seller. There’s a title track of that album. Before she released it, the song “Dangerously in Love” was recorded by Beyonce with bandmates as Destiny’s Child.

7. Daydream
This was one of Mariah Carey’s biggest selling albums. In fact, it was her second best, next to the album “Music Box”. That album has scored at least three singles to reach number 1 in the US.

8. Destiny’s Child
They were one of the biggest girl groups of all time. Beyonce was formerly a member of it. Their most known songs were “Say My Name”, “Independent Women” and “Survivor”.

9. Demi Lovato
She is one of the popular pop stars today. She was also one of the singers who started on Disney. Her most recent hits were “Cool for the Summer” and “Confident”.

10. Drive
The earliest hit by the band Incubus. The song was released more than a decade ago. Aside from this song, I like “Wish You Were Here” and “Are You In?”.

Pop Groups that People Wanted to Have Reunion

I am a fan of music and I fell in love to the music of a lot of groups. As a music fan, I knew there were a lot there who are fans of groups too. I still follow such groups and see if they have something new to offer after their disbandment and ever wanted to reunite. Many fans still crave for these bands to make music again.

TLC
It might be impossible that the trio can reunite as a trio again. Sadly, that in early 2000’s, Lisa Lopes known as “Left Eye” passed away. She didn’t reach the point that their album “Girl Talk” was released, where she still has vocals, of course as a rapper. But fans still want the remaining two members to release new music. I think it is in the works.

NSYNC
Justin Timberlake had became a huge superstar but currently enjoying life out of the limelight as a father and a husband. When they had reunited in a perforance in VMA, fans looked back and wanted a reunion of the group since they took a hiatus and never heard back of new album since “Celebrity”.

Destiny’s Child
The two members Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams shown up and performed with co-member Beyonce during the latter’s performance in Superbowl Halftime. It went fans to request the girls for a reunion album, yet, it didn’t happen.

Jonas Brothers
The guys has planned for an album released before, however, it was not released which frustrated a lot of fans. Maybe someday they will release a new one.

Spice Girls
They were the biggest pop group during 1990s and popularity was cut off when Ger Halliwell left the group. They had reunited in 2007 for a tour and a compilation album. But fans still wanted to see them back together. There were negotiations though for a reunion.

One Direction
It was just months ago when hiatus was announced but it seems fans are missing them and see them together again. Well, they recently had released the music video for “History”. While a reunion? It is still unlikely. Directioners though are hoping for the best.

“Writings on the Wall”
Destiny’s Child released their second LP in 1999 with this album. It had a good start in the US but did very well worldwide in 2000. It had lots of great R&B songs especially the upbeat ones. The group were known with fast-paced sang stanzas in their song through this album. It was very successful as it went platinum and multiplatinum in several countries.

Bills, Bills, Bills
Destiny’s Child’s “No, No, No” was one word mentioned thrice in the title, this time it was “Bills, Bills, Bills”. The R&B song sound like the part 2 of TLC’s hit “No Scrub”.It has became a hit which gave the group their first Billboard number one hit.

Trends and Cliches in Mainstream Music (2000-2004)

Music is still very much alive from 2000-2004, however, album sales was seen on its decline. This was due to the rise of digital music and piracy. Still, we saw the trends in music with the rise of new artists, as well as trends in genres.

First-week million sales
It has been a phenomenon in music to sell one million copies in just one week. The record breaker for a long time was set on first quarter of 2000 when NSYNC broke sales with 2.4 million US sales. That same year, Eminem broke more than 1.7 million for “Marshall Mathers LP, Britney Spears second LP “Oops… I Did It Again” with more than 1.3 million and Limp Bizkit’s “Chocolate Starfish and Hotdog Flavored Water” with more than 1 million. Several artists this era reached a million in first week like Usher, Norah Jones and Backstreet Boys (had two albums with Millenium from 1999). NSYNC held the second place for a long time to with “Celebrity” with 1.8 million plus, and another album from Eminem.

Boybands going hiatus
Boybands enjoyed their peak during 1995-1999. They started the new millenium with a bang, but as 2002 started, boybands such as Backstreet Boys and NSYNC took hiatus. European boybands continued though like Westlife and Blue.

As boybands and girlbands go hiatus, many members of those groups went solo. NSYNC’s Justin Timberlake achieved success with his debut. Nick Carter of Backstreet Boys though had limited success. While Beyonce of Destiny’s Child had her superstardom began in 2004.

Young female stars going sexy
We also saw the young female stars going sexier this era. Britney Spears left her role model image as she has gone sexy in her third album. Christina Aguilera is very notable though as she has shown her dirtiest image in 2002 with her video “Dirrty” and her breakout album “Stripped”.

Young female pop/rock stars
In 2002, Avril Lavigne rocked the charts with her debut album “Let Go”. Despite Michelle Branch first came out, she was not credited for the rise of pop/rock music. Vanessa Carlton had platinum success with her debut album, while Jennifer Love Hewitt released a pop/rock album. We also saw Hillary Duff and Ashley Simpson followed the pop/rock genre.

Rock bands
Rock has become a very popular genre in 2000 with the success of Limp Bizkit. Linkin Park became victorious too who scored the biggest selling rock album of the decade with “Hybrid Theory” and a huge second album “Meteora”. Nickelback, Coldplay and Creed became successful this era too.

R&B music
R&B music has been on its peak when year 2000 begun. It was led by Destiny’s Child, Jennifer Lopez, Ashanti, Beyonce and others. Even pop stars incorporated R&B in their music.

Hip-hop music
Hip-hop music scene is very much alive this era too. We saw the success of Eminem, Nelly and Ja Rule, as well as the introductory of Chingy, 50 Cent and others.

Remixes
Remixes has been popular too this era. It started when Jennifer Lopez topped the charts with “I’m Real” which led to the release of her remix album. The album set record when it went to number one. Other successful remix albums were from P. Diddy and Linkin Park.

Memorable song lines: Destiny’s Child

Destiny’s Child has been one of the biggest R&B group due to their songs about love, and girl power. It was like they were the 2000s version of the Spice Girl because of similar themes in their songs.

No, No, No
“But when I ask you what’s the deal
You hold it all inside”
The girl is asking if he likes her but the guy kept denying his feelings, though the fact is the guy likes her and the girl feels that.

Bills, Bills, Bills
” Instead of a scrub like you
Who don’t know what a man’s about”
A song similar to TLC’s “No Scrub”, the song is about a guy who at first was cool but eventually was dependent to the girl. With the lines above, the girl doesn’t a guy who was a ‘scrub’.

Bug a Boo
“You make me wanna throw my pager out the window
tell MCI to cut the phone calls”
The guy is becoming irritating for the girl that she came to the point that she wants to throw her comunication devices. Anyway, I never thought pager is still a trend during that year.

Say My Name
” Why can’t you just tell the truth
If somebody’s there, then tell me who”
The guy might be with another girl and the girl just want to know the truth and she also wants to know whome he is flirting with.

Independent Women
” Question: Tell me how you feel about this
Try to control me boy you get dismissed”
These girls do’t depend on guys anymore and dumped guys who are too controlling. Does it mean they can live without guys as they want to be independent.

Survivor
” You thought that I’d be broke without you
But I’m richer”
The lines sound like an ‘in your face’ message to former members of the group. Well, they succeeded as this record earned a lot of money.

Lose My Breath
” Take me out so deep when you know you can’t swim
Need a lifeguard and I need protection”
The lyrics talks about a girl who can’t get no satisfaction with the guy. Hhmmm. Many of you might know what the girls mean.

Girl
” I’m Your Girl, You’re My Girl, We’re Your Girls
Don’t You Know That We Love You?”
This is a friendship song for the girls as they assured their love to each other. Nice midtempo song though.

Top R&B Hits 2000-2004

Since 2000, many R&B songs released were upbeat and it is common for rappers and R&B to collaborate and create good songs. Remixes are very common too. Here are the top R&B hits during this period I listed based on its impact and success.

Mariah Carey ft. Joe and 98 Degrees- Thank God I Found You
This song has become Mariah’s last chart-topper before successful comeback in 2005. The beautiful ballad also included R&B singer Joe and US boy band 98 Degrees. The remix version sounds good too, but excluded 98 Degrees.

Sisqo- Thong Song
One of the best upbeat R&B hits during the first half of 2000, Sisqo gained a fanbase through this song. Oh wait, you might’ve heard “livin’ la vida loca”, you heard it right, it was interpolated.

Outkast- Ms. Jackson
This is the first and biggest hit internationally by the hip-hop duo, the song was also one of the best hip-hop songs since 2000s.

Destiny’s Child- Independent Women Part 1
The group just became a trio and it played big success for their career as this ‘girl power’ themed song became one of the longest number 1 hits.

Janet Jackson- All For You
It was a huge comeback for Janet after a high debut and long weeks at number one with this danceable R&B tune.

Destiny’s Child- Survivor
One of the successful “I Will Survive”” songs, this R&B track became one of the biggest hits of 2001.

Alicia Keys- Fallin’
This remains the most memorable song for Alicia Keys for topping the charts. This soulful ballad was one of the best love songs of 2001.

Nelly ft. Kelly Rowland- Dilemma
How about falling in love with someone even committed with someone? This love song just became a 10-week holder at top spot in the US.

Mary J. Blige- Family Affair
This is one of the catchiest and most memorable upbeat R&B tune during the decade. Just hearing the beat, you will know what song is that. It is the biggest hit of Mary J. ever.

Beyonce ft. Jay-Z- Crazy in Love
This song brought Beyonce’s career to great heights as it became her first hit as lead artist. It has become a global hit in 2003.

Aaliyah- Miss You
This was released posthumously and remained one of the top R&B ballads during the period. It is also one of the most known song by Aaliyah.

50 Cent- In Da Club
50 Cent’s success can be attributed to this club hip-hop hit. It helped his LP to go multiple platinum.

Beyonce ft. Sean Paul- Baby Boy
Incorporating Arabic sound in its music, this is how this second chart-topper from Bey was known.

Usher- Yeah!
Consider as Usher’s biggest hit, this helped his “Confessions” LP sell a million in a single week. This is one of the club-ready hip-hop songs during 2000s.

Usher and Alicia Keys- My Boo
Usher’s team up with the talented Alicia Keys has become one of the best and successful duets of 2004.
