Music 10 D’s: Daft Punk to Drive

1. Daft Punk
They were producers, songwriters and artists who are very known for their recent hit “Get Lucky” with Pharrell Williams. Two decades ago, they released the hit “Around the World”.

2. D’you Know What I Mean
Oasis had released this very lengthy song “D’you Know What I Mean” from the record breaking album “Be Here Now”. This was just like yesterday, but in fact, it is almost a 20-year old song.

The breakthrough album of one of the biggest bands Green Day. According to reports, it had sold more than 20 million, their biggest seller before “American Idiot in 2004.

4. Dancing Queen
Who doesn’t know this song? It is the signature song of the Swedish group ABBA. It was covered by a bunch of artists, and can still be heard nowadays. A proof that it is a timeless hit.

5. Dashboard Confessional
Dashboard Confessional is one of my favorite bands. My favorite song from them was “Stolen” because of its good lyrics and melody. It was followed by “Vindicated”.

6. Dangerously in Love

Album’s Single Review: Demi Lovato “Don’t Forget” and “Here We Go Again”

Don’t Forget (album)
“Don’t Forget” is the initial album by Demi Lovato away from Disney stuff she did. Most of the songs were pop rock, like most Disney stars do. But this album is groundbreaking doing good sounds which is not the same as what she portrayed on Disney programs. The album did well in the US when it reached number 2 in Billboard 200.

Get Back
“Get Back” is a pop rock song in an upbeat pace. It’s about gping back to the good old days, like reminiscing stuff. It went to number 43 in Billboard Hot 100.
Rate: 7.0 out of 10

La La Land
“La La Land” is another pop rock song from “Don’t Forget” album. It sounded quite slower than the previous one and I think even better. The song though, peaked at lower number 52 in Billboard singles chart, but a top 40 hit in United Kingdom.
Rate: 7.25 out of 10

Don’t Forget
“Don’t Forget” is a beautiful song which starts at a slower pace and gets louder at the last chorus.¬† It is the best single released from the album and was Demi’s highest charting single from the album after reaching 41 in Billboard Hot 100.
Rate: 8.75 out of 10

Here We Go Again (album)
Demi Lovato released “Here We Go Again” to be her official secind album. The album again contained pop rock song, but there’s a slight touch of punk on it. The album became her first US number 1 album.

“Here We Go Again”
The title track is a good song but I don’t think it is way better than “Don’t Forget” track. The song was her biggest hit at that time though after reaching the top 15 of Billboard Hot 100.
Rate: 7.5 out of 10

Remember December
“Remember December” was released as the final single, and just the second, from “Here We Go Again” album. I can sense the sound of Hayley Williams of Paramore from the song. However, it failed to chart in Billboard.

Battle of Same Song Title: Dream vs Demi Lovato / Miley Cyrus vs Wiz Khalifa

Here are the battle between a girl group and a young female artist, then a young female artist against a rapper with a male singer:

Dream vs Demi Lovato
“This Is Me”

Dream is a successful girl group in the US in 2001. This song was like an introductory of them after the first single “He Loves Me Not”. The single failed to match or even come close to the success of their first single. It only charted in the US where it peaked inside the top ten of Billboard Hot 100.

Demi Lovato sang this song along with Jonas Brothers member Joe Jonas. The song was part of the Disney TV movie “Camp Rock” which achieved success next to “High School Musical” then. The song went to top 10 in the US and has charted in some countries globally.

Dream- This is Me
Melody and Lyrics- 3.25 / Success- 1.75= 5.0

Demi Lovato- This is Me
Melody and Lyrics- 3.25 / Success- 2.75= 6.0

Winner: It’s Demi Lovato who won the battle for “This Is Me” song with one point gap against Dream.

Miley Cyrus vs Wiz Khalifa
“See You Again”

During the peak of Hannah Montana’s success, this song was released for the second soundtrack of the TV show. The song became the second biggest Hannah Montana hit next to “The Climb” as it it peaked at the 10th spot in the US charts. It also charted well in other countries.

Wiz Khalifa along with young singer Charlie Puth has co-wrote this beautiful song as a tribute to Paul Walker for the movie “Furious 7”. The first time I heard the song, it gave me goosebumps. It went to number one worldwide and was next to “Uptown Funk” as the biggest song of 2015.

Miley Cyrus- See You Again
Melody and Lyrics- 2.75 / Success- 3= 5.75

Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth- See You Again
Melody and Lyrics- 4.5 / Success- 4.75 = 9.25

Winner: It is clear as the sky that Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth won against Miley Cyrus for the “See You Again” battle.

Performances Highlights in Grammy Awards

Grammy Awards had just wrapped up and the winners were finally announced. Aside from unexpected winners, there treat performances. The highlight performances was the tribute to the legendary soul singer Lionel Ritchie, rock legend Lemmy, and the late David Bowie. The Lionel Ritchie tribute performers were R&B singer John Legend, pop stars Demi Lovato and Meghan Trainor, and country star Luke Bryan. After the artists mentioned performed, Luke and John escorted Lionel from the audience up to the stage and sung “All Night Long” as the closing of the performance. Hollywood Vampires made a hard rocking performance¬† too as a tribute to Lemmy.
Another tribute performance was Lady Gaga who paid homage to the late David Bowie. She’s dressed a la David Bowie. She is the perfect singer to do the tribute knowing Lady Gaga’s biggest influence was David Bowie which she vocally claimed when she is just starting as a mainstream artist. The background colorful effects of the performance is magnificent too.
Taylor Swift had a good performance top of her current single “Out of the Woods”. She has one of the most number of nominations this year after her highly successful album “1999”.
Justin Bieber finally performed on Grammy Awards too. It is his first time in the award show where he had his first win too as a featured artist for Skrillex and Diplo’s “Where are You Now?”, which he performed after an acoustic version of “Love Yourself“.
There were great duets too. I loved the performance of Andra Day and Ellie Goulding with the songs “Rise Up” and the popular “Love Me Like You Do”. Country stars Sam Hunt and Carrie Underwood performed a mash-up of their songs.
One of the best performance was the one from rapper Kendrick Lamar which receives a standing ovation. The Weeknd also did good performing his songs. Miguel sang his own version of Michael Jackson’s “She’s Out of My Life”.
Adele’s performance is one of the most awaited. However, sound problem occurred during the performance which affected the supposedly magnificent performance. In just a few seconds of her performance, the sound or audio was lost. It is supposed to be an intimate performance with her vocals and piano, but there’s guitar and bass sound in some part. It is obvious on Adele’s face and even her voice that she was bothered but she continued. After her performance, Adele received standing ovation despite the glitch.
To close the show, Pitbull and Robin Thicke performed with party sounds.

Trends and Cliches in Mainstream Music (Since 2010)

Since 2010, there are a lot of changes in music industry and we also witnessed how album sales went down. Though, we saw the success and record breaking success of Adele as the most successful artist in this era. Here are some of the trends and cliches in music industry since 2010:

Electronic dance music (EDM)
Electronic dance music continued to dominate all the genres. We heard successful records from David Guetta, Avicci, Calvin Harris, Zedd, and a lot more. Even most pop stars and even R&B singers sung a lot of dance music, showing how popular the genre is. Some of them were Rihanna, Beyonce, Chris Brown, Britney Spears, Usher, and a lot more.

Music crossover to pop
There were a lot of artists who changed or tried other genres which led to their notable success, though some did not succeed. Maroon 5 may already had pop hits before 2010, however, they became full time pop band with their 2012 album “Overexposed” and their recent “V”. Taylor Swift is the most successful in crossing over to pop. She gave a taste of pop tunes in her partly pop, partly country album “Red”. With her latest album “1989”, she became a fully-pledged pop star.

Formerly teen stars going sexy
There were a lot young stars before 2010 who took the “good girl, gone bad” route. Miley Cyrus became the most controversial who went naked in “Wrecking Ball”, magazine covers, parties and the raunchy performance on VMA 2013. Selena Gomez also went naked in her current album cover “Revival” and music video. Demi Lovato also went sexier on her new album “Confident”.

Million selling first week
It seems the phenomenon during first half of 2000s is happening since 2010 despite the sales are going down with albums. Taylor Swift has the most nunber of albums to reach the million threshold. Her third studip release “Speak Now” reached over 1.04 million on its first week according to Soundscan. Her fourth album “Red” sold higher with 1.21 million, while her recent and current album exceeded 1.28 million. But the recordbreaker and fastest among all was Adele’s “25”, which exceeded 3.38 million.

Soundtrack albums did well since 2010. “Frozen” is the most successful which became very successful in 2014. Other successful soundtracks were “Fifty Shades of Grey”, Pitch Perfect 1 and 2, “Furious 7”, “Glee” albums, and a lot more.

Retro music
It seems retro and old music is incorporated in music of some pop stars. Meghan Trainor is known for her pop, soul and doo wop sound on her “Title” album. Charlie Puth incorporated Motown sound on his music, and the 80’s sound on Carly Rae Jepsen’s sound on her “Emotions” LP.

Surprise releases of albums
Beyonce broke record for releasing surprise album and went to number 1 with massive sales. Other artists followed suit which included Drake.

There were a lot of changes in music from 2005-2009. As noticed, there were a lot of newcomers, trends has significantly changed as well as decline of CD or album sales.

British female soul singers
Any Winehouse achieved more success in her 2006 second album “Back to Black”, while another soul singer Corinne Bailey Rae became successful with her debut album after her successful single ” Put Your Records On”. Another soul singer, Duffy, achieved worldwide success with her album “Rockferry” and became the top selling artist in 2008 in UK. Adele also debuted that same year but achieved more success with her second album.

Rise of digital and single downloads
Digital sales increased during this era and we saw the rise of singles downloads. Downloads are now included to eligible to chart in music charts.

Drop of album sales
With the rise of digital downloads, album sales went down continually. This era, no albums released ever reached 20 million in sales.

Electronic Dance Music
In 2009, EDM (Electronic Dance Music) was seen to rise. David Guetta achieved successes after the hit single “When Love Takes Over” with Kelly Rowland on vocals. Lady Gaga’s sound became popular as well, thus, opening the path for dance music on the rise.

Disney princesses
This is the era when Disney princesses debuted in music industry. Miley Cyrus became successful with her Hannah Montana TV show as well as the film and soundtracks. She reached number 1 with her introductory LP “Breakout”. Other Disney stars, Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez, had their first albums to Billboard top 10.

Musicals on TV and movies
Disney released a TV film “High School Musical” which became a phenomenon, It had its sequel again on TV, while the last part was a movie released on theaters. The soundtrack albums became big sellers too. In 2009, musical show “Glee” became successful in ratings while records sales sold millions too.

American Idol winners
After Kelly Clarkson’s success, Americal Idol continued to break the ratings game. Carrie Underwood achieved successes and became one of the top country artists. Other AI winners achieved limited success.

Girl groups
Two notable girl groups who broke album sales this era, Pussycat Dolls and Danity Kane. The former though became the most successful female group at that time.

Successful comeback
We saw Mariah Carey’s successful comeback with “Emancipation of Mimi” after 2 flop albums. Madonna went back on top again after “American Life” performed modestly. Her “Confessions on a Dance Floor” became a top seller. Justin Timberlake’s long awaited second album became one of the best selling albums during this era.
