Trends and Cliches in Mainstream Music (Since 2010)

Since 2010, there are a lot of changes in music industry and we also witnessed how album sales went down. Though, we saw the success and record breaking success of Adele as the most successful artist in this era. Here are some of the trends and cliches in music industry since 2010:

Electronic dance music (EDM)
Electronic dance music continued to dominate all the genres. We heard successful records from David Guetta, Avicci, Calvin Harris, Zedd, and a lot more. Even most pop stars and even R&B singers sung a lot of dance music, showing how popular the genre is. Some of them were Rihanna, Beyonce, Chris Brown, Britney Spears, Usher, and a lot more.

Music crossover to pop
There were a lot of artists who changed or tried other genres which led to their notable success, though some did not succeed. Maroon 5 may already had pop hits before 2010, however, they became full time pop band with their 2012 album “Overexposed” and their recent “V”. Taylor Swift is the most successful in crossing over to pop. She gave a taste of pop tunes in her partly pop, partly country album “Red”. With her latest album “1989”, she became a fully-pledged pop star.

Formerly teen stars going sexy
There were a lot young stars before 2010 who took the “good girl, gone bad” route. Miley Cyrus became the most controversial who went naked in “Wrecking Ball”, magazine covers, parties and the raunchy performance on VMA 2013. Selena Gomez also went naked in her current album cover “Revival” and music video. Demi Lovato also went sexier on her new album “Confident”.

Million selling first week
It seems the phenomenon during first half of 2000s is happening since 2010 despite the sales are going down with albums. Taylor Swift has the most nunber of albums to reach the million threshold. Her third studip release “Speak Now” reached over 1.04 million on its first week according to Soundscan. Her fourth album “Red” sold higher with 1.21 million, while her recent and current album exceeded 1.28 million. But the recordbreaker and fastest among all was Adele’s “25”, which exceeded 3.38 million.

Soundtracks
Soundtrack albums did well since 2010. “Frozen” is the most successful which became very successful in 2014. Other successful soundtracks were “Fifty Shades of Grey”, Pitch Perfect 1 and 2, “Furious 7”, “Glee” albums, and a lot more.

Retro music
It seems retro and old music is incorporated in music of some pop stars. Meghan Trainor is known for her pop, soul and doo wop sound on her “Title” album. Charlie Puth incorporated Motown sound on his music, and the 80’s sound on Carly Rae Jepsen’s sound on her “Emotions” LP.

Surprise releases of albums
Beyonce broke record for releasing surprise album and went to number 1 with massive sales. Other artists followed suit which included Drake.

Trends and Cliches in Mainstream Music (2005-2009)

There were a lot of changes in music from 2005-2009. As noticed, there were a lot of newcomers, trends has significantly changed as well as decline of CD or album sales.

British female soul singers
Any Winehouse achieved more success in her 2006 second album “Back to Black”, while another soul singer Corinne Bailey Rae became successful with her debut album after her successful single ” Put Your Records On”. Another soul singer, Duffy, achieved worldwide success with her album “Rockferry” and became the top selling artist in 2008 in UK. Adele also debuted that same year but achieved more success with her second album.

Rise of digital and single downloads
Digital sales increased during this era and we saw the rise of singles downloads. Downloads are now included to eligible to chart in music charts.

Drop of album sales
With the rise of digital downloads, album sales went down continually. This era, no albums released ever reached 20 million in sales.

Electronic Dance Music
In 2009, EDM (Electronic Dance Music) was seen to rise. David Guetta achieved successes after the hit single “When Love Takes Over” with Kelly Rowland on vocals. Lady Gaga’s sound became popular as well, thus, opening the path for dance music on the rise.

Disney princesses
This is the era when Disney princesses debuted in music industry. Miley Cyrus became successful with her Hannah Montana TV show as well as the film and soundtracks. She reached number 1 with her introductory LP “Breakout”. Other Disney stars, Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez, had their first albums to Billboard top 10.

Musicals on TV and movies
Disney released a TV film “High School Musical” which became a phenomenon, It had its sequel again on TV, while the last part was a movie released on theaters. The soundtrack albums became big sellers too. In 2009, musical show “Glee” became successful in ratings while records sales sold millions too.

Two notable girl groups who broke album sales this era, Pussycat Dolls and Danity Kane. The former though became the most successful female group at that time.

Some facts from Wikipedia

Top EDM Songs by a DJ

During the last 10 years, we heard how the trend in music has evolved. From late ’90s, pop music dominated the music scene. During the first half of 2000s, R&B music was popular as well as rock tunes (during the success of Linkin Park and Avril Lavigne). At the second half, R&B music was still huge but transformation gradually happened during the late 2000s to dance music.

Behind these dance hits were producers and DJ. They made hits for superstars. R&B singers even followed the trend with the likes of Rihanna, Usher and Chris Brown. However, these DJs and producers recorded their own album and hired other artists to provide vocals. Here are some of the biggest EDM hits from a DJ. The ranking was not made because of sales but by my choice.

Calvin Harris ft. Ellie Goulding- Outside
This was one of the big EDM hits this year. Ellie Goulding’s soothing voice is just perfect for this song.

David Guetta ft. Kelly Rowland- When Love Takes Over
This is one of the first EDM hits in this generation. It was also an entrance for Kelly Rowland to EDM until she went back to R&B. This was a huge number oen hit in UK.

Zedd ft. Foxes- Clarity
This was a big EDM hit from young DJ Zedd. This was a nice love song and even sang but some artists on TV as well as on YouTube.

Icona Pop ft. Charlii XCX
This sounds different from other EDM hits mentioned. It was huge million selling song, which is due to its catchy hook. Thanks to Charlii XCX who played a big part on the song.

David Guetta ft. Usher- Without You
Among in this list, this may be the catchiest but it’s not enough to top this list. However, it opened a way for Usher to sing EDM songs. It propelled to top 10 worldwide.

Avicii ft. Aloe Blacc- Wake Me Up
I love the inspirational lyrics of the song and Aloe Blacc’s beautiful voice is being showcased. So far, this is one of the most successful EDM songs.

David Guetta ft. Sia- Titanium
I may not be a big fan of Sia but he made some of the most beautiful EDM hits. Lyrically, this is the best song because of inspiring inner strength despite the negativity or falsehoods thrown towards you. The song became one of the biggest selling EDM songs and remains a staple in many playlists and also used as commercial music background.

The Powerful Voice of Sia

Last night while watching a TV show, there’s this singer who performed one of 2014’s biggest hits, “Chandelier” from the singer and songwriter Sia. The song was considered as the artist’s breakthrough. If you will ask common people if they already heard Sia before, only few or even none may answer “Yes”. But now, everybody knows the song, some people will even say it is difficult to sing.

Well, Sia has a unique voice and nobody can sing like her. When I first heard “Chandelier”, there’s a little touch of Rihanna but hers is more unique and has higher range. It’s a perfect song she wrote for herself and a good idea not to give to other artists. You heard it right, she had written to other artists and they were superstars. Britney Spears’ “Perfume” was written by her and even did background vocals. While another pop star Christina Aguilera collaborated with her in a number of songs for her (underrated and underwhelming?) album “Bionic”. And who will forget the worldwide hit “Diamonds” , the last number 1 hit from Rihanna? Recently, you heard her composition/s in Beyonce’s huge self titled album and from the movie “Pitch Perfect 2”. It is a testament of her huge talent that other artists adore her.

Back then, Sia already released records nevertheless, reception from the public was lukewarm. Her first music video and song that I heard and saw was “Clap Your Hands”. It’s catchy but a song that lacks force to elevate her song to the masses. Then I heard her voice over David Guetta song “Titanium” and Flo Rida’s “Wild Ones”. She co-wrote the songs and served as doorway to international stardom.

After “Chandelier”, her controversial song (because of its music video) “Elastic Heart” proved she can’t be a one-hit wonder (as solo) when it peaked inside the top 20 globally. It’s a good song too and garnered hundreds of millions of hits in YouTube.

What’s next from Sia? Looking forward to hear more from her and show everyone the power of her voice.
