Music 10 C’s: Coldplay to Chandelier

1. Coldplay
They are one of the favorite bands. They had a lot of hit albums and singles as well. My favorite album from the band was “Parachutes” because of its melancholic and emotional sound.

2. California Gurls
The first single from Katy Perry’s album “Teenage Dream”. It featured rapper Snoop Dogg. Katy Perry dropped her pop rock sound to purely pop in this song.

3. Can’t Buy Me Love
One of The Beatles’ most notable songs. I often hear this song back then since my brother always play the compilation album of The Beatles.

4. Christina Aguilera
One of the top female artists who emerged in 1999. She had a lot big hits. It was also the title of her first album which generated four top 3 hits on Billboard Hot 100.

5. Can’t Feel My Face
One of the biggest hits during the recent year. It was a song by Canadian singer The Weeknd. It reminded me of Michael Jackson upon hearing the song with such a funk on it.

6. Cher
She is one of the most successful female artists which her career spanned decades and still relevant. Her most successful single was “Believe” in 1998.

7. Champagne Supernova
One of Oasis’ signature songs. It is one of my favorites from the band which was released during the mid-1990’s. It was taken from their biggest album “(What’s the Story) Morning Glory?”.

8. Cassie
She is a R&B singer who was known for the hit “Me and U”. However, she can be considered as a one-hit wonder after the success of that sole single. She is one of the half-Filipino and half-American singer.

9. Chris Brown
He was known for a lot of hits, either R&B or EDM tracks. His most widespread successful album was “Exclusive” which generated the international hit “With You”.

10. Chandelier
This was sang by one of the best voices today, Sia. Aside from scoring hits, she wrote and produced hits for other artists today. By the way, “Chandelier” has been a global hit and even reached more than a billion views on YouTube.

The Scientist
“The Scientist” was the second released single from “A Rush of Blood to the Head”. The song is actually one of the best songs of Coldplay ever”. It is also one of their most notable hits. It is a beautiful alternative ballad and Chris Martin’s falsetto at the last part is an ear candy. The song charted in a number of territories and peaked inside the top 10 in United Kingdom.

Album’s Singles Review: Coldplay “Parachute”

Coldplay became popular through their first album called “Parachutes”. The album contains melo-dramatic rock songs. Their music is somewhat similar to fellow British band Travis, but sounded more melancholic. The album was eventually 2x platinum in the US, according to RIAA, while it became 8x in United Kingdom.

“Shiver” was releasdd as the album’s lead single but in Asia, it was released as their last single knowing it didn’t do much success in UK. It only reached number 35 there, while failing in the rest of the world. The song was the heaviest single they had released from the album.
Rate: 7.0 out of 10

The song followed “Shiver” as the second single in United Kingdom, but it was their first single released in other countries, which included America. In Asia, it was their first song too which became popular. The song according to frontman Chris Martin was about unrequited love, which many songs recently have such theme. It was one of my favorite Coldplay song, and it is one of the most notable songs. The single went to top 5 in United Kingdom and top 50 in Billboard.
Rate: 9.25 out of 10

This song is the second most popular single off “Parachutes”. It is the most downtempo single released, but not the slowest from the entire album as there were slower tracks. It shows the vulnerability of the band as well as its lead vocalist, Chris Martin. The song talks about love not given back, as well as apologies as stated Chris Martin. The song became the band’s second top 10 off from UK.
Rate: 7.75 out of 10

Don’t Panic
This is the last singe from the band’s debut album “Parachute”. The song is just a soft rock song and one of the stand out from the album. I love the song’s simplicity and its music background made it a beautiful song. It charted in a few countries.

Music Rivalries: Bands (Rock or Pop)

It is rare to see rock bands in musical rivalry, but it do exists. While in pop bands, they really exists as often stimulated in news by media.

Limp Bizkit vs Linkin Park
Limp Bizkit has been on the limelight years before Linkin Park had released their debut. But Limp Bizkit achieved the peak of their mainstream success in 1999 in the US through the multiplatinum album “Significant Other” and international attention in 2000 via “Chocolate Starfish and Hotdog Flavored Water” which has been worldwide mega-seller. That same year, Linkin Park debuted in the music scene with their debut album “Hybrid Theory”. Limp Bizkit has a better attention at that time when “Chocolate Starfish” album sold more than a million in just a week in America, while “Hybrid Theory” is already selling well but struggling to reach the heights of Limp Bizkit. The two bands were compared because of similar style, both rap and rock. Nevertheless, with Limp Bizkit, Fred Durst is solely the vocalist, while Linkin Park has Chester Bennington as main vocals and Mike Shinoda is the rapper. Despite the attention for Limp Bizkit, it has changed as “Chocolate Starfish and Hotdog Flavored Water” became their last commercially successful record by the band. Then that opportunity was given to Linkin Park who had a longer successful career and even surpassed the success of Limp Bizkit to double.

Hanson vs The Moffatts
Hanson used to be the pop rock band with siblings as members then. However, a new band came out in 1998 which their debut single sounds like a slower rip-off of Hanson’s “Mmmbop”. The two may not had such rivalry in America as The Moffatts was unknown then in the country, but in Asia comparison has been rampant wherein fans are competing which is the more successful group. Hanson became very successful during their early mainstream career. But their peak remained with “Middle of Nowhere” album. Their succeeding albuns were less successful. The Moffatts released their debut in America more than a year after achieving success in Asia, but with moderate reception for them. The Moffatts achieved huge success in Asia, particularly in the Philippines. But if you are going to look at their entire careet, Hanson brothers did better. They are still releasing independent albums which are still charting.

Coldplay vs Keane
Coldplay achieved success in early 2000s, while Keane at mid-2000s. When Keane came out, similarities was noticed and comparisons were maid between the two band. Both band sounds soft as well as their vocals. But I must admit both were great bands. Keane achieved success through their albums “Hopes and Fears”. But none of their succeeding albums managed to match their debut. While Coldplay is still very much relevant these days. They still scored a number one album through “A Head Full of Dreams”. It is very clear that Coldplay still slays music while Keane is currently inactive.

Battle of Same Song Title: Coldplay vs Pink / Christina Aguilera vs Melanie C.

Two rockers are in a battle, but a band and a female singer. The second one is between two female pop singers. The battles listed below:

Coldplay vs Pink

In 2000, Coldplay released this song as a follow-up to the band’s initial hit “Yellow”. The song which is composed mostly with a piano background is somewhat mellow. It went on to become the band’s second top ten hit in their homeland, United Kingdom. Though it was just a modest hit internationally.

Pink came out with this song in support of her third studio album “Try This”. The song became a hit particularly in Europe. It was also covered by the Alvin and The Chipmunks in their movie.

Coldplay- Trouble
Melody and Lyrics- 3.0 / Success- 2.0= 5.0

Pink- Trouble
Melody and Lyrics- 2.5 / Success- 3.0= 5.5

Winner: Pink’s upbeat rock “Trouble” song defeated the melancholic and emotional rock song of Coldplay.

Christina Aguilera vs Melanie C
“I Turn to You”

Christina Aguilera had this song released as her third single for her first album. The ballad though was originally performed by All 4 One. The song is about turning to the one who protects you and cares for you which pertains to a mother. It may be a modest hit in many countries but it was a big hit in the US reaching the third spot.

Former Spice Girl Melanie C released her own “I Turn to You” song which she co-wrote, shortly after Christina Aguilera’s single. The song became a US dance hits and a huge hit in the entire Europe when it reached number one, which was her second chart-topper in UK.

Christina Aguilera- I Turn to You
Melody and Lyrics- 4.0 / Success- 3.0= 7.0

Melanie C- I Turn to You
Melody and Lyrics- 3.0 / Success- 3.75= 6.75

Winner: Christina Aguilera won the “I Turn to You” battle with a small gap.

Top 5 Albums in My Playlist

Having a Spotify Premium account is such a blessing for music lovers that’s why I don’t mind paying a low subscription monthly since I can listen to songs and albums anytime I want. However, there are mainstream albums which I can’t listen on Spotify, particulary blockbuster albums like Taylor Swift’s “1989” and Adele’s “25”. So I just downloaded them online and I don’t have to go to the record stores to purchase it. Availing of music is already easier than ever before. As I look at my playlists, I listed down the albums that Iisten to lately. Here they are below, ranked from 5 to 1:

5. Florence and the Machine- How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful
I think this is one of the best albums in 2015. It is somewhat more spiritual and deep while Florence Welch’s voice remains so haunting. My favorite cuts from the album were “What Kind of Man” and the title track.

4. Justin Bieber- Purpose
I admit, I disliked Justin Bieber before. Even downloading this album, I am skeptical to do it because of his behavior before. But I still downloaded it to hear what he has to offer, and this album is far more better than his past songs for the maturity of sound, as well as the meaningful lyrics. My favorite tracks off the record were “Mark My Words” and “Company”.

3. Ed Sheeran- X
Still a big fan of this album despite being out for more than a year. Ed Sheeran is just an amazing singer, songwriter, and musician. He is sp deep with his songs. My favorite tracks from the album “Bloodstream” and “Thinking Out Loud”.

2. Coldplay- A Head Full of Dreams
I admit, I preferred Coldplay’s old melancholic rock sound. But people do gets tired of hearing the same music so they did some experimentation. I began to appreciate their sound when it changes. Their “Ghost Stories” album has become their full length record not to showcase their old sound and was more on pop, edm, electronic, synth and ambient. While their current album “A Head Full of Dreams” is their more adventurous record. My favorite cuts were “Everglow” and “Hymn for the Weekend”.

1. Adele- 25
Some people call it overrated but that’s what highly successful albums get. If she is good at telling her heartbreak story in “21”, the new one “25”, is like she’s talking to you and telling stories. You can feel it from her vocals and emotions being input in the songs. Her vocal prowess is just a bonus, the depth was even more showcased. My favorite tracks were “When We Were Young” and “All I Ask”.

Albums that are more successful than its singles (2007-2008)

In this period, there were a lot of albums that became big hits. With regards to the albums’ singles, they underperformed though. Here are those albums:

Amy Winehouse- Back to Black
The album spectacularly performed well and even one of the biggest selling albums of 2007 and 2008. Despite its performance, no other single, other than “Rehab”, has performed very well in the charts.

OST- High School Musical 2
The youngsters of High School Musical are back in this soundtrack. The album did very well after settling at number 1 again. It ended as one of the biggest sellers of 2007. It had a US top ten hit with “What Time is It?”, however, the other singles didn’t make an impact.

Linkin Park- Minutes to Midnight
Linkin Park returned for their third studio album which insurprisingly topped the charts and sold millions of records. Nevertheless, it only had at least two official hits which were “What I’ve Done” and “Shadow of the Day”.

Eagles- Long Road Out of Eden
Eagles made a comeback in 2007 through this album. It became a surprise hit ending Britney Spears’ consecutive number one albums, after her album “Blackout” was defeated to debut at number two. the album went multiplatinum in the US. Despite the album’s success, the album never scored a hit single.

Michael Buble- Call Me Irresponsible
Michael Buble already had a hit album, and this follow-up became a huge one again. The album reached number one in many countries. and became one of the biggest selling albuns during this period. Some of its singles charted but barely charted.

Miley Cyrus – Hannah Montana 2 / Meet Miley Cyrus
The soundtrack album of the hit series went to number in one in Billboard charts again. It became multiplatinum again. It didn’t score a top ten hit though.

Alicia Keys – As I Am
The record was Alicia Keys’ third number one album , and became a big seller again. In fact, its first week sales broke the record of its second album. It scored the number one hit single “No One”. Nevertheless, it is the only big hit produced by the hit album.

Coldplay – Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends
The album topped the charts worldwide and became Coldplay’s fourth big sellers. It had them score their first number one single worldwide with “Viva la Vida”. Still, their other singles did not become a big hit.

AC/DC – Black Ice
Legendary hard rock band AC/DC returned with this album, which topped the charts worldwide with reported sales of 8 million. It is rare for artists to reach that sales nowadays, and the album became one of the biggest sellers of 2008. It released some singles but did not became hits.

Metallica – Death Magnetic
After their hit album “St. Anger”, the band returned with this another worldwide number one album. It had a hit single “The Day That Never Comes”, which is the only considered hit from the album.

This debut album by Duffy is among 2008’s biggest selling albums. It had a major hit “Mercy”, while other songs were modest hits.

Here are the stellar albums with less than stellar singles during 2005 to 2006.

Coldplay- X&Y (2005)
This third album by Coldplay is among the biggest sellers of 2005. According to estimates, it has sold over 13 million copies. Despite the album’s success, as usual forĀ  a Coldplay album, it’s only big hit is “Speed of Sound”. The single “Fix You” had some successes in certain countries.

Gorillaz- Demon Days (2005)
After the success of their debut album, the virtual band is finally back with their new album. The album became a success with 8 million in sales, with only one stellar single “Feel Good Inc”. The song “DARE” became a UK number one hit anyway.

Michael Buble- It’s Time
Michael Buble made a success with this album with approxiamte sales of 8 million. It scored the popular song “Home” which surpisingly did not do well in the charts.

OST- High School Musical
High School Musical TV movie is such a phenomenal hit. It triggered the sales of the soundtrack album to the top. The album’s single “Breaking Free” charted inside the top 10 in nany countries. However, it is the only single released from the album.

Red Hot Chilli Peppers- Stadium Arcadium
Since “Californication”, Red Hot Chilli Peppers scored a string of hit albums which this album is the last big hit records. It topped the charts worldwide with millions of sales. It scored the hit single “Dani California”, but its succeeding singles did not match its success. It’s not enought to match the album’s success.

James Blunt- Back to Bedlam
This album by James Blunt may have been released earlier than 2005, but it achieved success since the mentioned year. After the hit single “You’re Beautiful”, the album’s sales was heightened. Despite with only one real hit single, the album became the number one selling album internationally in 2006. “Goodbye My Lover” single charted but not that successful.
