Trends and Cliches in Mainstream Music (1995-1999)

In music, there are different kinds of styles that are often followed by other artists. As it becomes a trend, new artist will come out in the same genre or style, or even established artists follow suit.

From 1995-1999, there are a lot changes in mainstream music world. Pop music has been dominating the era as new artists came out and putting those established artists behind. Here are some of the trends and cliches from 1995 to 1999.

Female rockers
In 1995, Canadian singer Alanis Morissette dominated the record sales off her hit album “Jagged Little Pill”. With her success, other female artists doing pop/rock released some records. Sheryl Crow may had success with her debut album, but it was just a light album. Her second album sounded edgier apparently in her song “If It Makes You Happy”. On late 1997, Natalie Imbruglia released her first album “Left Off the Middle, and her 1998 single “Big Mistake” sounds like an Alanis song.

Boybands
Different boybands existed like mushrooms from 1995-1999. Some bands though, failed to attain success. The most popular boyband this era was Backstreet Boys, while in Europe and Asia, Boyzone and others, did well too. In 1999, Irish boyband Westlife scored 3 UK number one hits which led to further successes. NSYNC achieved success in 1999 especially in US.

Girl Power phrase / Girl groups
British girl pop group Spice Girls became the most relevant artist during this era which their success was compared to The Beatles. However, the group took hiatus too early after Geri bidded goodbye. Girl power remains a relevant phrase until now. Girl groups though became a trend too. We heard and seen another UK girl group All Saints. Despite their edgy sound, they followed the Spice Girls as the second top girl group at that time, eventhough the Spice’s success was miles apart from them. Other girl groups who had short success were She Moves, Solid Harmonie, etc.

Movie Soundtrack Hits
Songs from a motion picture has become a trend in 1998 after Celine Dion’s hit from Titanic, “My Heart Will Go On”. Other soundtrack hits whicg followed suit were Goo Goo Dolls’ “Iris” from “City of Angels”, Marc Anthony and Tina Arena “I Want to Spend My Lifetime Loving You”, Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing”, which became second most successful soundtrack in 1999.

Teen female stars
In 1999, we saw the success of Britney Spears from her album and singles. She eventually became one of the biggest female artist of all-time. After her success, Christina Aguilera topped the charts worldwide too. Then we saw the birth in music of Jessica Simpson and Mandy Moore.

Latin music
Latin music became a trend again as we saw Ricky Martin climbs the chart in 1998, and popularity heightened in 1999 with his first English album. We also the success of Jennifer Lopez, Enrique Iglesias and Marc Anthony. All of these three artists achieved success with millions of records sold.

Memorable Lines in Songs: Celine Dion (since 2000)

Celine Dion may not have sustained the popularity she had since 2000, but she is still one of the top sellers around. In countries where language spoken was French, her albums sold a lot in tjose territories.

That’s the Way It Is
” When you want it the most there’s no easy way out
When you’re ready to go and your heart’s left in doubt”
It’s like telling someone that love is not that easy, there were frustrations but not to give up because it happens in love.

Then You Look at Me
” And life just keeps on running
You look at me and life comes from you”
It was like the person’s life goes on because of that one person who completed it.

A New Day Has Come
” Where it was dark now there’s is light
Where there was pain, now there’s joy
Where there was weakness, i found my strength
This song sounds like the part 2 of “Because You Loved Me” with its lyrics. It’s about there’s this person who changed everything about your life like it was a new day.

Goodbye’s the Saddest Word
” Someday you’ll say that word and I will cry
It’ll break my heart to hear you say goodbye”
The song written for her mother, I feel what she felt too and it took me back to the time when my mother is saying goodbye days before her demise.

Have You Ever Been in Love?
” Have you ever been in love
You could touch the moonlight
When your heart’s shooting star”
It’s like the feeling when you are in love like touching the moon and the what the heart feels, and ask someone if they have ever been in love.

Taking Chances
“Don’t know much about your life
And I don’t know much about your world.”
It’s about the girl and the guy don’t know much about each other but giving themselves a chance to be together.

Loved Me Back to Life
” You loved me back to life, life
From the coma.
The wait is over.”
It’s like you don’t have no life until someone came to love you and you were ressurected.

Memorable Lines in Songs: Celine Dion (1990s)

Celine Dion was very much popular and earned a lot of awards during 1990s. In fact, she is one of the most popular female singers ever. Her songs were primarily love songs and ballads. In the list below, includes her biggest song ever.

Where Does My Heart Beats Now?
” Don’t know how love could leave without a trace
Where do silent hearts go?”
The guy left the girl and it feels like the heart stops beating because of the pain it caused.

If You Asked Me to
” It’s been a long time since I’ve had that feeling
I could love someone, I could trust someone”
Sound like the girl never loved someone for a long time and she felt it again this time with another guy.

Think Twice
” Don’t say what you’re about to say
Look back before you leave my life”
It seems the guy is about to leave the girl but the girl wants the guy to look back and think twice about his decision to leave.

Because You Loved Me
” For all those times you stood by me
For all the truth that you made me see
For all the joy you brought to my life”
This can be interpreted either for a partner, mother or a father. That one person gave and did all those great things which lifted the person up and showing appreciation.

It’s All Coming Back to Me Now
” It’s so hard to resist and it’s all coming back to me
I can barely recall but it’s all coming back to me now”
That someone you love left, but everything is coming to your memory and it hurts a lot.

Tell Him
” I’ve been there with my heart out in my hand
But what you must understand
You can’t let the chance to love him pass you by”
It’s like telling a friend that he she shouldn’t let the love pass by and tell the guy she loves about how she feels.

My Heart Will Go On
” Once more you open the door
And you’re here in my heart ”
That person you love is already gone, but he/she is still in your heart and remain there always.

I’m Your Angel
“No rivers too wide, for you to make it across
All you have to do is believe it when you pray”
It’s like telling someone that whatever he/she do, go on. Motivating and inspiring that person. You are always there for that person and tell him/her to have faith.

Recap: Your Face Sounds Familiar 2 (November 28 and 29, 2015)

I have been away last week due to being out of town so I am quite late for this recap. Anyway, to keep up with the episodes, I got to watch online with the performances. It has been an exciting week since the artists are performing with last season’s artists and impersonated duets of some icons.
Here are the performances from last week:

Denise Laurel as Barbra Streissand / Jay-R as Brian Adams
“I Finally Found Someone”
The performance good when it comes to vocals of the pair. The looks were quite good, though Jay-R’s look is more spot-on.

Kean Cipriano as Mick Jagger / Tutti Caringal as David Bowie
“Dancing in the Street”
I enjoyed the performance knowing they are copying the two British rock legends. The make up is perfect while the moves of Jagger is also there.

Eric Nicolas as John Travolta / Melai Cantiveros as Olivia Newton John
“Summer Nights”
It was an entertaining performance since the duo are copying 1970s acts. Thr dancing, moves though lacking in vocals.

Kakai Bautista as Ariana Grande / Maxene Magalona as Iggy Azalea
“Problem”
It seems everybody are doing well and I love this performance too. Knowing the range of Ariana, Kakai hit the notes.

Myrtle Sarosa as Kylie Minogue / Edgar Allan Guzman as Jason Donovan
“Especially for You”
It’s a good performance though the vocals isn’t exactly how it is. The appearance isn’t perfect too.

Sam Concepcion as Andrea Bocelli / Jolina Magdangal as Celine Dion
“The Prayer”
The performance is moving as Sam really did well copying Andrea’s voice. I think this is the best performance for the week knowing Sam as a pop and R&B singer and he did it perFectly.

Michael Pangilinan as Luther Vandross / Karla Estrada as Mariah Carey
“Endless Love”
Michael really did well copying Luther’s voice knowing his voice is far from Vandross. Karla did a good supporting as well.

Kz Tandingan as Shakira / Nyoy Volante as Beyonce
“Beautiful Liar”
It’s an enjoyable performance as KZ perfectly copied Shakira’s vocals. With regards to the moves, it was fine. Shakira didn’t move much in the music video unlike in her own videos.

The results below
1. Sam Concepcion
2. Denise Laurel
3. Kean Cipriano
4. Michael Pangilinan
5. Kakai Bautista
6. KZ Tandingan
7. Eric Nicolas (tie)
8. Myrtle Sarosa (tie)

Congratulations to Sam Concepcion as he really deserved it with his moving performance.

Your Face Sounds Familiar Season 2 airs on ABS-CBN 2 every Saturday and Sunday nights.

Female superstars who started in 1980s-1990s and their underwhelming albums

There are overwhelming number of female stars in music industry. If you are going to compare the number of male and female singers, female outnumbered male singers. Clearly enough, competition of female singers are very tight.

Many female singers who had been huge about 2-3 decades ago tries hard to maintain their relevance. However, due to some factors, they end up struggling to still sell millions in some of their records. Even the best sellers sometimes fail. Evidence were those artists listed below with their last albums which sold underwhelmingly:

Mariah Carey
Mariah maintained her success during the entire 1990s. Underwhelming selling albuns is not new for her though when her 2001 album “Glitter” became her lowest peaking studio album and her 2002 album “Charmbracelet” bombed both in sales and critical responses. She got her redemption in 2005 through “Emancipation of Mimi” as it became her biggest album of 2000s. Her album “Memoirs of Imperfect Angel” only reached #3 and failed platinum status. Last year, her comeback album “Me. I Am Mariah… The Elusive Chanteuse” may have peaked at high number 3 position but became her least successful album and considered a flop album by many.

Whitney Houston
She made it big with her first 2 albums in the ’80s and made it big with her soundtrack albums in the ’90s. Her first studio album after a string of 3 soundtrack albums, “My Love is Your Love” started slower but caught up after few months and became lustrous. Her last albums “Just Whitney” and “I Look to You” may have sold millions but not a testament of a huge comeback.

Celine Dion
Celine’s breakthrough came through “Color of My Love” and followed by more successful albums “Falling into You” and 1997’s “Let’s Talk About Love” which made her an A-list singer. Her success continued but never replicated with her last four albums. Her recent “Loved Me Back to Life” debuted at number 2 on Billboard 200 but with less sales compared to her previous.

Madonna
Madonna’s albums has always been huge. She may had lows but can make a huge comeback. In 1990s, her highly sexual LP “Erotica” was met with low sales compared to its predecessors and followed by underrated “Bedtime Stories”. She made huge comeback with “Ray of Light” and “Music”. Her “American Life” album was criticized and affected her sales despite a huge start. She came back with record setter “Confessions on a Dance Floor”. Her recent release “Rebel Heart” may have started at number 2 in US and number 1 in many countries but the reception in sales is not the usual she received.

Janet Jackson
After 5 chart-topping and multi-million selling album during 1980s until early 2000s, Janet released her album “Damita Jo” which was the start of her low sales and affected her 2 succeeding albums despite high position in ranks. That was due to wardrobe malfunction incident which entirely affected her career. Blacklisting from MTV is a huge part of her downfall. Recently, she released her independent record “Unbreakable” which surprisingly started at number 1. The sales was considerably huge since albums sales are declining.

10 Male and Female Duets of the Last 20 Years

When a male and female singer intertwined in a song, they can make a good love song. Hopeless romantic people fall in love with these songs which contributes to their successes. However, there are some duets about broken hearts.

10. Ricky Martin and Christina Aquilera- Nobody Wants to Be Lonely

When you’re longing for someone you love, then this will be a good song for you. It’s Latin power when the two artists as Latin roots. As expected, it was huge in Spanish-speaking countries. It was huge in Asia too.

9. Mariah Carey ft. Joe and 98 Degrees- Thank God I Found You

Mariah did several duets before, while in this song, she’s with Joe and included boyband 98 Degrees to sing in the chorus. This song reminded me of a song by Asian singers, Jackie Cheung and Philippines’ Regine Velasquez because of similar melody of the chorus. Still, this number 1 song Mariah is good to listen to and fall in love to its message.

8. Jennifer Lopez ft. LL Cool J- All I Have

This rap-sung collab from J.Lo and LL may be a sad love but it fits to be in this list. It was about leaving despite loving the person because of mistreatment from the partner. It was number 1 in the charts during first quarterof 2003.

7. Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran- Everything has Changed

It’s romantic when a girl and a guy can play guitar and made a great folk, pop, country love song. Taylor and Ed did a pretty good job with this UK top ten hit.

6. R. Kelly and Celine Dion- I’m Your Angel

This can be considered as a holiday song since this was released during the last quarter of 1998 and included in Celine’s holiday album. But this song is a promise of protection for loved ones. It was huge in US during the holidays.

5. Nelly ft. Kelly Rowland- Dilemma

Falling in love with another one despite in a relationship with someone? This song talks about that. Well, that’s Kelly’s dilemma. The song went to number 1 elsewhere in the world.

4. Pink ft. Nate Ruess-Just Give Me a Reason

This is a great love song about learning to love again despite all the flaws. The combination of Pink’s strong voice and Nate’s fragile voice is perfect. It has dominated the charts and radio and became like an anthem to many.

3. Beyonce ft. R. Kelly- If I Were a Boy (Remix)

It’s not the usual love song you hear, as it is about a relationship of a woman with a man and reversing her role as a man and how to treat the woman. R. Kelly answered in this great duey remix of the song.

2. Alicia Keys and Usher- If I Ain’t Got You

This is one of the best love songs released in 2004. Before Usher invited Alicia for “My Boo”, Alcia took Usher’s assistance to do the male part for this song’s remix. The song talks about everything in this world is nothing without her or his love.

1. Mariah Carey and Brian McKnight- Whenever You Call

This song was not released as an official single but reach the airwaves of some Asian countries. It was a solo of Mariah in the album version, however, recorded as a duet with Brian McKnight since it was co-written by him. It sounds better as a duet with this “I’ll Be There”-esque song. The reason why I picked this as number one because of its lovely lyrics and vocals of the 2 artists.

Top 8 Disney Songs Since the 1990s

At least many of us had watched any Disney movie, and of course, we heard some of their theme songs. Whenever we hear Disney songs, we can name which movie that song was taken. Since I am a 1990s kid, I created this list of top Disney themes heard since 1990s.

8. Circle of Life (performed by Elton John for The Lion King)

The soundtrack album was made possible through Elton John while some of musical scores were done by Hans Zimmerman. This song’s theatrical sound and epic sounding melody were the reasons why I included the song in this list.

7. Can You Feel the Love Tonight (performed by Eltow John for The Lion King)

Back to back from another Lion King song was this love song which was the theme song of Simba and Nala. This is also the main and carrier song of the OST.

6. For the First Time in Forever (performed by Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel for Frozen)

It was sung the time when Elsa will be declared as the new queen, Princess Anna (voiced by Kristen Bell) sung the most part of it. It was not an easy song to sing because of its pace on stanzas but the two artistw sung it really well.

5. Beauty and the Beast (performed by Celine Dion and Peabo Bryson for the OST of Beauty and the Beast and Angela Lansbury in the film as Mrs. Potts)

This is one of the most memorable love songs from Disney. Celine and Peabo had a great tandem while Angela as Mrs. Potts in the film delivered it well.

4. Reflections (performed by Christina Aguilera for Mulan, Lea Salonga from the film itself)

Lea Salonga’s voice has always been perfect especially in these kind of songs. Christina’s version was released as the single which shown her vocal prowess. The song was exactly about the protagonist of the film.

3. Colors of the Wind (performed by Vanessa Williams for Pocahontas as lead single, Judy Kuhn for the film)

The song really fits the nature as Pocahontas is a Native American woman in the film. Both versions of the artists were superb.

2. A Whole New World (performed by Peabo Bryson and Regina Bell for Alladin as lead single, Lea Salonga and Brad Kane for the movie)

Peabo and Regina’s version has soul in it but Brad and Lea’s voice sounds more theatrical. The song was a number one hit then.

1. Let it Go (performed by Idina Menzel for Frozen, Demi Lovato as a single)

This deserves to be the number one apart from being the biggest selling Disney single ever. Idina Menzel sang it very well with her high range. Demi’s version was more of a pop song.

Impressions of Ariana Grande and Christina Aguilera on Jimmy Fallon

After watching the impressions of Adam Levine on Jimmy Fallon via YouTube, I watched the impressions of Ariana Grande and Christina Aguilera. Both videos already garnered millions of views with Ariana’s episode as the latest. While Christina Aguilera’s video earned more views knowing it was shown months ago.

Ariana Grande first did Britney Spears with the song Mary Had a Little Lamb. She nailed the impression as she sang it at slow pace. What wowed me was when she imitated Christina Aguilera. I never though she can do the vocal gymnastics of Christina Aguilera, which she was known for. Her impression of Celine Dion singing The Weeknd’s “Can’t Feel My Face” is a spot on even the way Celine sings live. Admittedly, I am critical of Ariana’s vocal ability. I disagree whenever she was compared to Mariah Carey, knowing MC was one of the greatest female singers when it comes to vocal abilities. She’s even mumbling whenever she sings that I couldn’t understand the words. I also disagree with people I see on TV who are all praises for her voice. The Ariana we hear in her own songs is the real Ariana but that’s not all she can do. She can do better than that. My impression on her ability has now changed.

Then I watched Christina Aguilera’s episode. I already saw her impression before and I just watched it again. Since Christina, no other female singers came up that was at the level of her vocal ability. She was considered to be at a league of singers like Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston and Celine Dion due to their high vocal range. With regards to her impression, she first sang “The Folgers Song” the Cher way. Well, it’s been very easy for Christina to do that. But the most perfect impression she did was Britney Spears with the song “This Little Piggy” with the tune of “…Baby One More Time”. She was like the real Britney Spears in a Christina Aguilera’s face and clothing. She also nailed Shakira which she sung at the last.

What I am hoping to see in the program was Britney Spears and impression Ariana and Christina. If she did it, surely gain more fans and perception about her ability will change.
