Pop Vocal Groups with Male and Female Members

If there are boybands and girlbands, there are groups which has male and female members. The list I made includes groups without instruments, either doing pop, R&B and hip-hop, as long as they were a vocal group.

ABBA- They were the most popular and the biggest selling in their genre. With two males and two females, their formula even extends until the present time and some pop groups even tried to be like them.

Ace of Base- Also from Sweden, they seemed to become the next ABBA (with two males and two females) but their first success was not sustained. They were known for their biggest hit “The Sign”.

The Fugees- This American hip-hop group became famous with their LP “The Score” as well as their version of “Killing Me Softly”. Consists of Wyclef Jean, Pras Michael and Lauryn Hill, all of them had solo successes.

Aqua- They came from Denmark, this group became popular through “Barbie Girl” and a huge debut album. The group had Lene (the only female member) and Rene as leads. They have two other male members.

Steps- With two male and three female members, their sound is somewhat similar to ABBA. Their song “One for Sorrow” sounds a duplicate of an ABBA song. Their success is limited though.

S Club 7- The group consisted of four ladies and three gents, their music which predominantly pop just like Steps as they were both from UK. They first became popular through a Disney TV show which was shown worldwide. Their biggest hit was the ballad “Never Had a Dream Come True”.

A-Teens- They became popular as a tribute group for ABBA, their first LP contains old hits from ABBA and was successful particularly in Europe.

City High- This group is a reminiscent of The Fugees which this group was completely formed by former Fugees member Wyclef Jean. The group scored two top 20 hits in US.

Black Eyed Peas- Originally a group without a lady, Black Eyed Peas had finally signed Fergie making them one of the biggest groups since 2000. They spanned four multi-platinum since then.

Songs with Repeated Word TWICE in its Title During the Last 20 Years

Repeated words in a song can have its good effect for musicians as they can easily linger on ones mind. Many artists adapt it in their music and most of these hits became huge hits. During the last 20 years, here are some of those songs with repeated word twice in its title.

Black Eyed Peas- Boom Boom Pow
The song may have another word (pow) in the title but ‘boom’was mentioned twice. It was effective for the hip-hop group as at that time it was released, it was their longest number 1 hit (in Billboard Hot 100) for a staggering 12 weeks.

Hot Chelle Rae- Tonight, Tonight
The pop/rock group finally scored their first hit with “Tonight, Tonight” and it seems the formula of repeating ‘tonight’ in the song is effective. It went to top 10 in a number of official charts worldwide.

Maroon 5- Goodnight, Goodnight
Maroon 5 is saying ‘goodnight’and said it twice. The pop/rock song performed moderately in different charts.

Santana ft. The Product G&B- Maria, Maria
Santana incorporated different genres in his “Supernatural” album and this song was R&B influenced. Repeating the name “Maria” is effective as this song topped the US for several weeks.

M2M- Mirror, Mirror
This song sounds so sweet and innocent brought out by the sweet vocals from the duo. The first line of the chorus pertains to Snow White popular phrase “Mirror, Mirror on the Wall” which helped the song to enter charts especially in Asia where it is a number 1 hit there.

Naughty Boy ft. Sam Smith- La, La
This Naughty Boy and Sam Smith hit garnered millions of sales and hundreds of millions of views on YouTube due to its catchy tune and the repeated word ‘la, la’.

Jessie J., Nicki Minaj and Ariana Grande- Bang Bang
Among in this list, this song is the latest one. The collaboration from the three ladies eventually became a huge hit and mostly played in TV shows.

Destiny’s Child- Jumpin’, Jumpin’
It’s not new for Destiny’s Child at that time to repeat words in their songs as they did it their songs prior to this. It quickly reached the top 10 in several countries.

Sugababes- Round, Round
British girl group Sugababes turned around in this songs which effectively topped the charts their hometown and across Europe.

Rap-Sung Collaborations

It started out in the 90s when singers and rappers work together to form a song. A singer may invite a rapper for a rap part of a song or the other way around. Together, they can form a good melody which became a formula for a hit song.

Below is my list of 10 rap-sung collaborations:

10. Beyonce ft. Jay-Z- Crazy in Love

The couple first collaborated when Destiny’s Child appeared in Jay-Z’s song until the two worked together for “03 Bonnie & Clyde” (not on this list) and finally in this song, “Crazy in Love”. The horn sample dominates the entire song and the rap part is catchy and I can’t think how it’s like without it.

9. Nelly ft. Kelly Rowland- Dilemma

Nelly was known for catchy rapping. I mean his way of rapping creates melody especially heard in this song. Kelly Rowland’s part, though, made the song a bigger hit because of its melody.

8. Eminem & Rihanna- Love the Way You Lie

When bad boy rapper meets good girl gone bad singer, it will result to a great collaboration especially in a song about going through a difficult relationship. The huge collaboration resulted into huge success after achieving multi-platinum certification.

7. Fergie ft. Ludacris- Glamorous

What I love about this song is its smooth R&B sound. The rap is good enough to complete the song. Well, it just became Fergie’s second ┬ánumber one hit.

6. Twista ft. Kanye West and Jamie Foxx- Slow Jamz

This became one of the rap/R&B hits in 2004. I liked the song when I first heard it on radio. The sampling of Luther Vandross’ song made it more effective.

5. Ja Rule ft. Ashanti- Always on Time

Ja Rule always made effective songs during 2000-2003. Her collaboration with Jennifer Lopez and Ashanti were the most notable especially this song. Anyway, what made this song a hit was the catchy chorus.

4. Usher and Alicia Keys- My Boo

Many of you might think there’s no rapper in this song. Nevertheless, there’s rap part of the song done by Alicia Keys after Usher’s intro. It’s a beautiful mid-tempo love song that’s pleasing to listen to.

3. Black Eyed Peas ft. Justin Timberlake- Where’s the Love?

Justin may not have been properly credited in this song but the chorus is the life of the song along with its wonderful lyrics. It eventually became huge back in 2003.

2. Jennifer Lopez ft. Ja Rule- I’m Real (Remix)

The original version of the song is good but the remix version is better. I love how they sing and rap alternately in every line. It was huge at the charts back then.

1. Mariah Carey ft. ODB- Fantasy (Remix)

This is one of the biggest rap-sung collaboration of 1990s. It was also one of the first remixes of hip-hop and R&B. It proved that rap and singing can be effective in music industry.
