10 Male and Female Duets of the Last 20 Years

When a male and female singer intertwined in a song, they can make a good love song. Hopeless romantic people fall in love with these songs which contributes to their successes. However, there are some duets about broken hearts.

10. Ricky Martin and Christina Aquilera- Nobody Wants to Be Lonely

When you’re longing for someone you love, then this will be a good song for you. It’s Latin power when the two artists as Latin roots. As expected, it was huge in Spanish-speaking countries. It was huge in Asia too.

9. Mariah Carey ft. Joe and 98 Degrees- Thank God I Found You

Mariah did several duets before, while in this song, she’s with Joe and included boyband 98 Degrees to sing in the chorus. This song reminded me of a song by Asian singers, Jackie Cheung and Philippines’ Regine Velasquez because of similar melody of the chorus. Still, this number 1 song Mariah is good to listen to and fall in love to its message.

8. Jennifer Lopez ft. LL Cool J- All I Have

This rap-sung collab from J.Lo and LL may be a sad love but it fits to be in this list. It was about leaving despite loving the person because of mistreatment from the partner. It was number 1 in the charts during first quarterof 2003.

7. Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran- Everything has Changed

It’s romantic when a girl and a guy can play guitar and made a great folk, pop, country love song. Taylor and Ed did a pretty good job with this UK top ten hit.

6. R. Kelly and Celine Dion- I’m Your Angel

This can be considered as a holiday song since this was released during the last quarter of 1998 and included in Celine’s holiday album. But this song is a promise of protection for loved ones. It was huge in US during the holidays.

5. Nelly ft. Kelly Rowland- Dilemma

Falling in love with another one despite in a relationship with someone? This song talks about that. Well, that’s Kelly’s dilemma. The song went to number 1 elsewhere in the world.

4. Pink ft. Nate Ruess-Just Give Me a Reason

This is a great love song about learning to love again despite all the flaws. The combination of Pink’s strong voice and Nate’s fragile voice is perfect. It has dominated the charts and radio and became like an anthem to many.

3. Beyonce ft. R. Kelly- If I Were a Boy (Remix)

It’s not the usual love song you hear, as it is about a relationship of a woman with a man and reversing her role as a man and how to treat the woman. R. Kelly answered in this great duey remix of the song.

2. Alicia Keys and Usher- If I Ain’t Got You

This is one of the best love songs released in 2004. Before Usher invited Alicia for “My Boo”, Alcia took Usher’s assistance to do the male part for this song’s remix. The song talks about everything in this world is nothing without her or his love.

1. Mariah Carey and Brian McKnight- Whenever You Call

This song was not released as an official single but reach the airwaves of some Asian countries. It was a solo of Mariah in the album version, however, recorded as a duet with Brian McKnight since it was co-written by him. It sounds better as a duet with this “I’ll Be There”-esque song. The reason why I picked this as number one because of its lovely lyrics and vocals of the 2 artists.

My Choice 10 Musical Films

I have seen tons of musical films, either it was theatrical or comedic. It’s just fun to watch them. But there were some musical that are more serious especially those seen on Broadway and adopted into film.

10. High School Musical 3: Senior Year

Teen musicals can be fan too. We heard lots of pop tunes in this third installment of Disney’s High School musical trilogy. Among all the 3 films, for me it is the least likable but it doesn’t mean I don’t like it.

9. Hairspray

The film’s setting was in 1960s and featured A-list artists which includes John Travolta. It also marks Zac Efron as first musical big screen film after successful High School Musical TV films. It was good to see John in musical films again.

8. Evita

A film about Argentina’s first lady Evita Peron and was based from a musical. It became Madonna’s most successful film and gained her awards.

7. Dreamgirls

This is a story about a girl group patterned after The Supremes. Jennifer Hudson did so well and it became a major highlight of her career despite not one of the top 5 of American Idol before this film. She even flourished in this film after winning Best Supporting Actress in Oscar than its lead Beyonce.

6. Mamma Mia

Adapted into film from a musical, it was turned into film and became huge in box-office and based on the hit song of Swedish pop group ABBA. It regained sales for ABBA too, as well as success for the soundtrack album. Amanda and Merryl did the film well.

5. High School Musical

The first film of the series. Storywise, it’s better than the first one but it’s my second choice from the 3 films. It was only made for TV and was seen by hundreds of millions worldwide.

4. High School Musical 2

The reason why this is my first pic among all HSM movies is because of the music. The first has better story but the songs in the sequel was better.

3. Pitch Perfect 2

I am a Pitch Perfect movies fan. This is very hilarious but quite started at a low pace to get its story and the humor. After 15 minutes, it was all fun and you can connect its story to yeh first part.

2. Les Miserables 2012

I love how this was done in a film recently and Anne Hathaway who had a short performance in the film is the most memorable when she sang “I Dreamed a Dream”. You can feel the pain in her when she sang it.

1. Pitch Perfect

This is my favorite musical films ever because of its story and humor. Rebel Wilson was hilarious. I even remember this film every time I hear Ace of Base’s “The Sign”. Anna Kendrick’s “Cups” is a good song too. I watched the film several times and I will still watch it when I got the chance.

Rap-Sung Collaborations

It started out in the 90s when singers and rappers work together to form a song. A singer may invite a rapper for a rap part of a song or the other way around. Together, they can form a good melody which became a formula for a hit song.

Below is my list of 10 rap-sung collaborations:

10. Beyonce ft. Jay-Z- Crazy in Love

The couple first collaborated when Destiny’s Child appeared in Jay-Z’s song until the two worked together for “03 Bonnie & Clyde” (not on this list) and finally in this song, “Crazy in Love”. The horn sample dominates the entire song and the rap part is catchy and I can’t think how it’s like without it.

9. Nelly ft. Kelly Rowland- Dilemma

Nelly was known for catchy rapping. I mean his way of rapping creates melody especially heard in this song. Kelly Rowland’s part, though, made the song a bigger hit because of its melody.

8. Eminem & Rihanna- Love the Way You Lie

When bad boy rapper meets good girl gone bad singer, it will result to a great collaboration especially in a song about going through a difficult relationship. The huge collaboration resulted into huge success after achieving multi-platinum certification.

7. Fergie ft. Ludacris- Glamorous

What I love about this song is its smooth R&B sound. The rap is good enough to complete the song. Well, it just became Fergie’s second  number one hit.

6. Twista ft. Kanye West and Jamie Foxx- Slow Jamz

This became one of the rap/R&B hits in 2004. I liked the song when I first heard it on radio. The sampling of Luther Vandross’ song made it more effective.

5. Ja Rule ft. Ashanti- Always on Time

Ja Rule always made effective songs during 2000-2003. Her collaboration with Jennifer Lopez and Ashanti were the most notable especially this song. Anyway, what made this song a hit was the catchy chorus.

4. Usher and Alicia Keys- My Boo

Many of you might think there’s no rapper in this song. Nevertheless, there’s rap part of the song done by Alicia Keys after Usher’s intro. It’s a beautiful mid-tempo love song that’s pleasing to listen to.

3. Black Eyed Peas ft. Justin Timberlake- Where’s the Love?

Justin may not have been properly credited in this song but the chorus is the life of the song along with its wonderful lyrics. It eventually became huge back in 2003.

2. Jennifer Lopez ft. Ja Rule- I’m Real (Remix)

The original version of the song is good but the remix version is better. I love how they sing and rap alternately in every line. It was huge at the charts back then.

1. Mariah Carey ft. ODB- Fantasy (Remix)

This is one of the biggest rap-sung collaboration of 1990s. It was also one of the first remixes of hip-hop and R&B. It proved that rap and singing can be effective in music industry.

New Releases Review: Naughty Boy ft Beyonce & Arrow Benjamin, One Direction, Hailee Steinfield

Naughty Boy ft. Beyonce and Arrow Benjamin- Runnin’ (Lose it All)

After successful collaboration with Sam Smith, Naughty Boy worked with one of the biggest pop stars in the world, Beyonce. Arrow Benjamin was also featured in the song. It was Beyonce’s latest recording release after “7/11”. From hip-hop and R&B tune, this time she turned to this EDM track. This song, however, reminds me of her song “Haunted”. Her voice showed her prowess as well as Arrow Benjamin, who didn’t fail with his part. This song may possibly be a hit once it was released and may be a start of working relationship of Beyonce and Naughty Boy. Despite the strong performances of the artists, melody-wise, not as catchy as many hit EDM tracts.

One Direction- Infinity

After the huge success of “Drag Me Down” at the charts, One Direction finally released the follow-up for their upcoming LP they just named “Made in the A.M.”, which will be out ,as usual, on November. The song is a mid tempo ballad driven by synth and drums. The lyrics wa believed to be about former member Zayn Malik. The message is fine but it lacked more sincerity with the words. It’s just a short song to accommodate more words. The melody was good but not on par with “Story of My Life”. Many claimed, “Drag Me Down” was way bettef but I prefer this song.

Rating: 7.5 out of 10

Hailee Steinfield- Love Myself

After her notable appearance at the successful musical comedy film “Pitch Perfect 2”, Hailee Steinfield didn’t waste her talent and pursued musical career. When I watched the film, she has a good voice and possibly can carry the next “Pitch Perfect” movie. When I heard this I was like she should’ve done a better musical approach with a voice like that. The lyrics, was also believed as suggestive in social media which Hailee denied as it is about empowerment. Melodically, it is catchy but expected better from her. The song was already released more than a month ago but just catching up interest recently.

Artists’ Names in Song Titles

It seems dropping names of artists in song titles is the trend recently. Those songs may not be direct tributes to those artists, rather simile which compares an action to an artists. Not all though as we heard from current hits. Check those recent songs below:

Note: Some songs may be from recent years and mostly mainstream.

Madonna- B, I’m Madonna

Well, it was apparently sung by Madonna herself and it was telling the whole world that she’s Madonna. She’s a legend, an idea brought up by its producer, American DJ, Diplo. It was like to show Madonna started it all for other female pop stars around. Never mind the word “B”, it’s not intended or mean something vulgar.

Charlie Puth ft. Meghan Trainor- Marvin Gaye

Charlie admitted he’s a big fan of Motown music particularly, of Marvin Gaye. So this song may be a little tribute with his name as the title and some lyrics of Marvin Gaye’s song on it. However, it was like a euphemism since the song is somewhat salacious if you’re listen and understand its lyrics. Marvin Gaye became a verb in this song!

The Wanted-Walks like Rihanna

It seems Rihanna is a dream girl for the lads of The Wanted. However, it doesn’t matter to them if a girl cannot sing or dance, as long as she can walk like Rihanna. Now you know girls, if you like the guys of The Wanted, then check how Rihanna walks.

Maroon 5- Moves Like Jagger

Maroon 5 admitted that this song is a tribute to The Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger. Nevertheless, if you listen to its lyrics it has other meaning of it. Imagine Mick Jagger’s eccentric moves, it’s not just about the moves. I am telling you, lol!

Cher Lloyd- Swagger Jagger

Shortly after “Moves like Jagger”, this song was released from UK X -Factor alumna Cher Lloyd. It seems Mick Jagger has huge influence to many artists right?

Drake- Girls love Beyonce

This is a real tribute from Drake and pertaining that  a lot of girls loves and love to be like Beyonce. In the song also interpolates “Say My Name”, a song popularized by Bey’s former group Destiny’s Child.

Taylor Swift- Tim McGraw

This song was part of Taylor Swift’s humble beginnings as it became her first single. She’s still a country singer that time and she really loves Tim McGraw. Despite the Tim McGraw reference, it is a love song and failed relationship that perhaps connected with country music, particularly with Tim McGraw’s music.

Will Zayn Malik Be Able to Make it as Solo Superstar?

Six months ago, a news broke the hearts of many Directioners (One Direction fans) when its member Zayn Malik announced that he will be officially leaving One Direction, he reasoned he wants private and normal life away from the limelight. However, just few weeks ago, he revealed the real reason why he left One Direction. He had signed contracts with RCA Records for his solo album. Yes, going solo is his real reason why he left the group which upset many Directioners.

Now, the question is, will he be able to make it big like any other successful artists who were originally from the group? Many members of successful groups did not succeed going solo. Only few of them became real icons. Let’s consider, Nick Carter of Backstreet Boys. His debut album had decent sales but never brought him to the heights. Another example is the members of the Spice Girls which all of them did their solo projects. They were successful in their native UK and some parts of Europe, but never spread to the entire world. Their solo fan bases are limited. Melanie C and Geri Halliwell became biggest selling members of the group though who had real solo number 1 hits.

Among those former group members who became successful on their own were Michael Jackson, Beyonce and Justin Timberlake, which these three became pop icons. Michael Jackson became one of the biggest selling artists of all time. Beyonce and Justin Timberlake were two artists from a group and now pop icons of this generation. Beyonce who scored 5 consecutive number 1 albums was formerly from successful girl group Destiny’s Child, while Justin Timberlake was from boyband NSYNC.

There are factors though that can contribute to an artist’s success. During the time of Michael Jackson, technology is still miles away from what we have now and competition wasn’t that tight. During Beyonce and Justin Tinberlake’s debut years, there’s no social media. But today, there are many ways to advertise or promote one’s music. Social media, other platforms of selling music. It depends on an artist’s activity.

As a former member of One Direction, Zayn Malik has been active in social media and interacts with their fans. With right music and promotion, he can be among those successful solo stars who carved their name in the music industry.

Most Notable Musical Siblings as Solo Artists

Talent runs inside the family. They may possibly become actors and actresses, or singers and musicians. They may choose the same career path like the first in the siblings has chosen. The list below were four most notable musical siblings that are solo artists.

Michael Jackson and younger sister Janet Jackson

Michael Jackson was formerly part of The Jackson 5 which eventually became The Jacksons. He became the most successful and popular “Jackson”, however, his sister, Janet Jackson, came close to superstardom with numerous number 1 and top 10 hits. Both of them did the same route, singing and dancing. They have such similar talents which generated them millions of fans and made the two pop legends. The two has proven their good relationship when Janet supported Michael through their song “Scream”. The song was written for the media who has been cruel to Michael during those years before the song was released. The year Michael died, Janet became like the spokesperson especially at the VMAs when they paid homage to the King of Pop.

Beyonce and Solange Knowles

When Beyonce was still with Destiny’s Child, her younger sister Solange Knowles has been supportive to her older sister even until Beyonce went solo. On one of Bey’s song and music video, Solange appeared along with Bey’s former groupmates, Kelly and Michelle. Time came when Solange entered the music industry too, however, her works received lukewarm reception. Last year, news broke out regarding Bey’s husband Jay-Z and Solange, which shows the latter his hitting the former. No clarification from any party about what happened though.

Britney Spears and Jamie Lyn Spears

During Britney Spears’ debut years, she’s always with her cute little sister and you can see how much Brit loves her sister. Recently, Jamie followed her sister when she entered the music industry. Nonetheless, she took the different route when she did country music. The Spears sisters were from Louisiana where country music was also popular.

Nick Jonas and Joe Jonas

Well, Kevin is not included because he never had a solo album. When the Jonas Brothers went hiatus, Joe Jonas released his first solo album which failed top ten entry. Nick Jonas formed his own band called Nick Jonas and the Administration which had moderate reception. Nick eventually released his solo project which scored him 2 big hits and a top 10 album. So far, he is the most successful solo Jonas.

The Powerful Voice of Sia

Last night while watching a TV show, there’s this singer who performed one of 2014’s biggest hits, “Chandelier” from the singer and songwriter Sia. The song was considered as the artist’s breakthrough. If you will ask common people if they already heard Sia before, only few or even none may answer “Yes”. But now, everybody knows the song, some people will even say it is difficult to sing.

Well, Sia has a unique voice and nobody can sing like her. When I first heard “Chandelier”, there’s a little touch of Rihanna but hers is more unique and has higher range. It’s a perfect song she wrote for herself and a good idea not to give to other artists. You heard it right, she had written to other artists and they were superstars. Britney Spears’ “Perfume” was written by her and even did background vocals. While another pop star Christina Aguilera collaborated with her in a number of songs for her (underrated and underwhelming?) album “Bionic”. And who will forget the worldwide hit “Diamonds” , the last number 1 hit from Rihanna? Recently, you heard her composition/s in Beyonce’s huge self titled album and from the movie “Pitch Perfect 2”. It is a testament of her huge talent that other artists adore her.

Back then, Sia already released records nevertheless, reception from the public was lukewarm. Her first music video and song that I heard and saw was “Clap Your Hands”. It’s catchy but a song that lacks force to elevate her song to the masses. Then I heard her voice over David Guetta song “Titanium” and Flo Rida’s “Wild Ones”. She co-wrote the songs and served as doorway to international stardom.

After “Chandelier”, her controversial song (because of its music video) “Elastic Heart” proved she can’t be a one-hit wonder (as solo) when it peaked inside the top 20 globally. It’s a good song too and garnered hundreds of millions of hits in YouTube.

What’s next from Sia? Looking forward to hear more from her and show everyone the power of her voice.
