Trends and Cliches in Mainstream Music (Since 2010)

Since 2010, there are a lot of changes in music industry and we also witnessed how album sales went down. Though, we saw the success and record breaking success of Adele as the most successful artist in this era. Here are some of the trends and cliches in music industry since 2010:

Electronic dance music (EDM)
Electronic dance music continued to dominate all the genres. We heard successful records from David Guetta, Avicci, Calvin Harris, Zedd, and a lot more. Even most pop stars and even R&B singers sung a lot of dance music, showing how popular the genre is. Some of them were Rihanna, Beyonce, Chris Brown, Britney Spears, Usher, and a lot more.

Music crossover to pop
There were a lot of artists who changed or tried other genres which led to their notable success, though some did not succeed. Maroon 5 may already had pop hits before 2010, however, they became full time pop band with their 2012 album “Overexposed” and their recent “V”. Taylor Swift is the most successful in crossing over to pop. She gave a taste of pop tunes in her partly pop, partly country album “Red”. With her latest album “1989”, she became a fully-pledged pop star.

Formerly teen stars going sexy
There were a lot young stars before 2010 who took the “good girl, gone bad” route. Miley Cyrus became the most controversial who went naked in “Wrecking Ball”, magazine covers, parties and the raunchy performance on VMA 2013. Selena Gomez also went naked in her current album cover “Revival” and music video. Demi Lovato also went sexier on her new album “Confident”.

Million selling first week
It seems the phenomenon during first half of 2000s is happening since 2010 despite the sales are going down with albums. Taylor Swift has the most nunber of albums to reach the million threshold. Her third studip release “Speak Now” reached over 1.04 million on its first week according to Soundscan. Her fourth album “Red” sold higher with 1.21 million, while her recent and current album exceeded 1.28 million. But the recordbreaker and fastest among all was Adele’s “25”, which exceeded 3.38 million.

Soundtracks
Soundtrack albums did well since 2010. “Frozen” is the most successful which became very successful in 2014. Other successful soundtracks were “Fifty Shades of Grey”, Pitch Perfect 1 and 2, “Furious 7”, “Glee” albums, and a lot more.

Retro music
It seems retro and old music is incorporated in music of some pop stars. Meghan Trainor is known for her pop, soul and doo wop sound on her “Title” album. Charlie Puth incorporated Motown sound on his music, and the 80’s sound on Carly Rae Jepsen’s sound on her “Emotions” LP.

Surprise releases of albums
Beyonce broke record for releasing surprise album and went to number 1 with massive sales. Other artists followed suit which included Drake.

Trends and Cliches in Mainstream Music (2000-2004)

Music is still very much alive from 2000-2004, however, album sales was seen on its decline. This was due to the rise of digital music and piracy. Still, we saw the trends in music with the rise of new artists, as well as trends in genres.

First-week million sales
It has been a phenomenon in music to sell one million copies in just one week. The record breaker for a long time was set on first quarter of 2000 when NSYNC broke sales with 2.4 million US sales. That same year, Eminem broke more than 1.7 million for “Marshall Mathers LP, Britney Spears second LP “Oops… I Did It Again” with more than 1.3 million and Limp Bizkit’s “Chocolate Starfish and Hotdog Flavored Water” with more than 1 million. Several artists this era reached a million in first week like Usher, Norah Jones and Backstreet Boys (had two albums with Millenium from 1999). NSYNC held the second place for a long time to with “Celebrity” with 1.8 million plus, and another album from Eminem.

Boybands going hiatus
Boybands enjoyed their peak during 1995-1999. They started the new millenium with a bang, but as 2002 started, boybands such as Backstreet Boys and NSYNC took hiatus. European boybands continued though like Westlife and Blue.

Going solo
As boybands and girlbands go hiatus, many members of those groups went solo. NSYNC’s Justin Timberlake achieved success with his debut. Nick Carter of Backstreet Boys though had limited success. While Beyonce of Destiny’s Child had her superstardom began in 2004.

Young female stars going sexy
We also saw the young female stars going sexier this era. Britney Spears left her role model image as she has gone sexy in her third album. Christina Aguilera is very notable though as she has shown her dirtiest image in 2002 with her video “Dirrty” and her breakout album “Stripped”.

Young female pop/rock stars
In 2002, Avril Lavigne rocked the charts with her debut album “Let Go”. Despite Michelle Branch first came out, she was not credited for the rise of pop/rock music. Vanessa Carlton had platinum success with her debut album, while Jennifer Love Hewitt released a pop/rock album. We also saw Hillary Duff and Ashley Simpson followed the pop/rock genre.

Rock bands
Rock has become a very popular genre in 2000 with the success of Limp Bizkit. Linkin Park became victorious too who scored the biggest selling rock album of the decade with “Hybrid Theory” and a huge second album “Meteora”. Nickelback, Coldplay and Creed became successful this era too.

R&B music
R&B music has been on its peak when year 2000 begun. It was led by Destiny’s Child, Jennifer Lopez, Ashanti, Beyonce and others. Even pop stars incorporated R&B in their music.

Hip-hop music
Hip-hop music scene is very much alive this era too. We saw the success of Eminem, Nelly and Ja Rule, as well as the introductory of Chingy, 50 Cent and others.

Remixes
Remixes has been popular too this era. It started when Jennifer Lopez topped the charts with “I’m Real” which led to the release of her remix album. The album set record when it went to number one. Other successful remix albums were from P. Diddy and Linkin Park.

Recap: Your Face Sounds Familiar Season 2 Finale

The ending finally has come and five celebrities are vying for the big winner this season. Tonight, the five celebrities had performed and the winner will be announced tomorrow.

Here are the performances tonight:

Sam Concepcion as Justin Bieber
“Boyfriend / Sorry”
Sam Concepcion’s last performance in this show was an impersonation of the Canadian pop superstar Justin Bieber. It is a good performance though I feel he never went out of his comfort zone. Likewise, Justin has been about serenading his fans without too much iconic movements or looks. Still a good performance given that it is the finals.

Denise Laurel as Beyonce
“Love on Top / Crazy in Love”
It has been a stellar performance for Denise imitating one of the biggest singers today, Beyonce. It was great to see as she is full of confidence. It is within her comfort zone too but she broke out in this performance.

Kean Cipriano as Ricky Martin
“Livin’ La Vida Loca”
Kean’s performance is so-so for me. It seems he is losing his voice and changed the note of some parts. The movements though was perfect. But I think Kean trying to be different didn’t succeed.

KZ Tandingan as Lady Gaga
“Born this Way”
KZ did a great performance! Her impersonation of Lady Gaga is a good choice knowing Gaga’s identity. Her dances are also superb. I think she is a good contender based on her performance.

Michael Pangilinan as Adam Levine of Maroon 5
“Sugar”
Michael did a perfect performance as Adam Levine. The sexiness and of course, the voice of Adam Levine being perfectly impersonated. The judges are right with all their comments that it is a perfect way to end the season.

With all the performances, this is my judgment in ranking:
1. Michael Pangilinan
2. KZ Tandingan
3. Denise Laurel
4. Sam Concepcion
5. Kean Cipriano

Last year, Melai Cantiveros won which I think because of her choice in impersonating Miley Cyrus. The entertainment value is there despite poor vocals. This time, I think KZ will win because of choosing Lady Gaga. She’s at my second with the ranking but knowing Lady Gaga who did a lot gimmicks and KZ performed well so I think people will vote for her to be the big winner this second season.

Tomorrow will be announced tomorrow on ABS-CBN 2 after Rated K.

Recap: Your Face Sounds Familiar 2 (November 28 and 29, 2015)

I have been away last week due to being out of town so I am quite late for this recap. Anyway, to keep up with the episodes, I got to watch online with the performances. It has been an exciting week since the artists are performing with last season’s artists and impersonated duets of some icons.
Here are the performances from last week:

Denise Laurel as Barbra Streissand / Jay-R as Brian Adams
“I Finally Found Someone”
The performance good when it comes to vocals of the pair. The looks were quite good, though Jay-R’s look is more spot-on.

Kean Cipriano as Mick Jagger / Tutti Caringal as David Bowie
“Dancing in the Street”
I enjoyed the performance knowing they are copying the two British rock legends. The make up is perfect while the moves of Jagger is also there.

Eric Nicolas as John Travolta / Melai Cantiveros as Olivia Newton John
“Summer Nights”
It was an entertaining performance since the duo are copying 1970s acts. Thr dancing, moves though lacking in vocals.

Kakai Bautista as Ariana Grande / Maxene Magalona as Iggy Azalea
“Problem”
It seems everybody are doing well and I love this performance too. Knowing the range of Ariana, Kakai hit the notes.

Myrtle Sarosa as Kylie Minogue / Edgar Allan Guzman as Jason Donovan
“Especially for You”
It’s a good performance though the vocals isn’t exactly how it is. The appearance isn’t perfect too.

Sam Concepcion as Andrea Bocelli / Jolina Magdangal as Celine Dion
“The Prayer”
The performance is moving as Sam really did well copying Andrea’s voice. I think this is the best performance for the week knowing Sam as a pop and R&B singer and he did it perFectly.

Michael Pangilinan as Luther Vandross / Karla Estrada as Mariah Carey
“Endless Love”
Michael really did well copying Luther’s voice knowing his voice is far from Vandross. Karla did a good supporting as well.

Kz Tandingan as Shakira / Nyoy Volante as Beyonce
“Beautiful Liar”
It’s an enjoyable performance as KZ perfectly copied Shakira’s vocals. With regards to the moves, it was fine. Shakira didn’t move much in the music video unlike in her own videos.

The results below
1. Sam Concepcion
2. Denise Laurel
3. Kean Cipriano
4. Michael Pangilinan
5. Kakai Bautista
6. KZ Tandingan
7. Eric Nicolas (tie)
8. Myrtle Sarosa (tie)

Congratulations to Sam Concepcion as he really deserved it with his moving performance.

Your Face Sounds Familiar Season 2 airs on ABS-CBN 2 every Saturday and Sunday nights.

Since 2000, many R&B songs released were upbeat and it is common for rappers and R&B to collaborate and create good songs. Remixes are very common too. Here are the top R&B hits during this period I listed based on its impact and success.

Mariah Carey ft. Joe and 98 Degrees- Thank God I Found You

Memorable Dance Sequences in Music Videos

We rarely see singers nowadays doing their dance sequences on their music videos. A decade ago, most artists inserts dance sequences on their videos which was adorn by many due to the artists’ skills. This is to pay homage to best dancers and singers at the same time.

Beyonce- Run the World (Girls)
The video was known for its heavy choreography. The dance movements which starts with moving her shoulders and known for usage of tap dance inspired some artists performing on TV. The song may performed moderately in the charts but it played a big influence in music.

Backstreet Boys- Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)
It’s horror theme was inspired by Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” had a extended dance sequence version. The steps are simple but it is well remembered.

Britney Spears- …Baby One More Time
She was adorn through her talent as singer and a dancer (some may disagree due to her frequent lip synching) and this video is her earliest hit. She’s really a good dancer if you have seen this video for the first time since it is loaded with dance moves.

Usher- Yeah!
I once thought Usher as to be the next Michael Jackson of his talent in dancing, however, his success was not sustained. In this video, we saw his skills and I love how laser light is flashing during the dance sequence.

Michael Jackson- Thriller
This is one of the earliest videos with great dance sequence. The zombie steps had a great influence on a Backstreet Boys video, and considered as one of the best videos of all time.

Jennifer Lopez- If You Have My Love
This is the first ever video of Jennifer Lopez and she had showcased her skills as in the video, where there’s extended dance sequence. She doesn’t even need dancers in the sequence as she did it alone.

NSYNC- Bye, Bye, Bye
The choreography in the video is iconic due to its steps like with strings on their hands being controlled. Such formula was taken for their next song “It’s Gonna Be Me”.

Janet Jackson- Rhythm Nation
The choreography makes it her most iconic in music and considered Janet Jackson as one of the best dancer-singer. It’s military theme, dancing with a chair and some steps influenced other artists in their music videos.

Beyonce- Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)
Considered as one of the best videos ever (became a Video of the Year awardee in VMA), it is just a simple video with plain background. What makes this video iconic is in fact is its simplicty. She danced from the beginning to the end of the video, only with three dancers and an amazing choreography.

Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson- Scream
I picked this as number one because it showcased the siblings’ great talent in dancing and not because it is the most expensive music video ever. It’s sci-fi theme is good but I love their dance sequence.

Creepiest Music Videos in Mainstream Music that I have seen

Music videos are a good way of promoting music and I do enjoy watching them. I have been watching MTV since my younger years and shifted to YouTube because MTV is not anymore the source of music videos as it shows more reality programs.

There are lots of music videos that turns out creepy for me and I listed them below:

Linkin Park- In the End
This video may not be totally scary but Linkin Park often shows odd images that are hard to explain and only them knows. In thsi video, I was bothered with the statues and the one they are playing in.

Michael Jackson- Thriller
I did not put this at the top because it’s not very scary for me but I was convinced that Michael looks scary as a monster.

Beyonce- Haunted
There’s something about the aura of the music video and even at Beyonce’s eyes in this music video. I even noticed it in her music videos from her “Beyonce” album.

Prodigy- Breathe
Prodigy always looks scary but this one is the scariest. Everytime it was played on MTV, I changed the channel.

Evanescence- Call Me When You’re Sober
Evanescence has always been scary in many music videos they did. In this video, Amy’s eyes are scary also when she floated on air. Gothic themes are always creepy for me.

My Chemical Romance- Welcome to the Black Parade
There were imagery of walking dead people and even skeletons. Well, it just fits the song but I don’t want to watch its music video.

Madonna- Frozen
Madonna is in the desert at night with the moon and even floats on air. She even turned into a black dog. Then sips blood from the desert ground through her hands. The cinematography contributed to its creepiness.

Evanescence- Going Under
Honestly, I found Amy Lee evilish in some parts. I never watched the music video again because it scared me and disturbed me in some parts.

My Chemical Romance- Helena
This music video shows some parts women dancing and floated on air too. Also, there’s a funeral and it means there’s coffin. The vocalist’s makeup is creepy too.

Overrated Artists Since the Last 10 Years

Media is responsible why many artists became so overrated. Some people got tired on hearing about certain artists. It happens especially an artist becomes very successful and media will sensationalize them. Based on observation and media posts on the internet and visual media, here are the artists I listed who became overrated during the last 10 years.

Beyonce
Looking through comments on social media sites like Facebook, Twitter and other sites such as Yahoo News and YouTube, many people states Beyonce was too overrated. Well, even her pregnancy especially after she had shown her baby bump on VMAs, it is too overstated. Media also often talks about Bey, which includes her record breaking surprise album.

Lady Gaga
Aside from successful albums and singles, every performance of hers and even her dresses were highly documented by the media. Even her controversial music videos were often talked about too.

Taylor Swift
Every relationship of her gave media attention. When she crossed over to pop music and the success of “1989”, everything she does is over the news. Well, Taylor contributed to such sensationalism.

Justin Bieber
Remember the ‘Bieber Fever’? Justin gained so much fans especially to young people. He’s all over Twitter and in news platforms, either positive or negative.

One Direction
Yes, they are the world’s biggest boyband and pop band during the last five years. Their intense activities on social media paid off. Media is all over them for their success. Every time they release their carrier singles, you can always see articles about it on Billboard.

Rihanna
She has the most number 1 singles during the last 10 years and you can always see it on Billboard. Everything she post on Twitter, an article was ready to read anywhere.

Katy Perry
She’s probably next to Rihanna for having lots of hits. “Teenage Dream” is a sleeper hit which also contributed to the success of “Prism”. Often, it is overstated which even includes her tour.

Hot “Baby” Songs during the last 20 Years

I heard a lot of songs during the last 20 years with the word “baby”. Those songs were not literally about an infant, rather, used to be a term of endearment to one’s partner. I created a list of “Baby” songs during the last 20 years, check below:

Mariah Carey- Always Be My Baby
Taken from the blockbuster album “Daydream”, this song is a like yoi are taking in a fresh air from Mariah, after the high vocal range along with Boyz II Men with “One Sweet Day”. This pop/R&B song became MC’s 11th chart-topper in her homeland, US. American Idol winner David Cook released his own version of it and was a hit in the Philippines.

Justin Bieber- Baby
This catchy song was Justin’s biggest hit to date despite peaking in lower position than his recent hit songs. It is even among the most viewed video ever in YouTube history. I may not be a Bieber fan but I agree that this song is catchy.

Beyonce / Sean Paul- Baby Boy
During Sean Paul’s success with “Get Busy”, Beyonce invited Sean in this sexual song “Baby Boy”. It became Bey’s second number 1 hit, and its Arabic sound influenced other R&B songs to incorporate the sound.

Gwen Stefani- Baby Don’t Lie
Supposedly her comeback after joining the panel of coaches on The Voice, this song hit the top 50. Her supposed new album is still in the works after about a year when this song was out. This time, the song is a cleaner one after the profanity-infused hit “Hollaback Girl”.

Christina Aguilera- Come on Over Baby (All I Want is You)
Initially, the word “baby” is not included in the title of the song until the revised the song and added “baby”. The song, though, is quite sexual despite knowing Christina as a teen star at that time.

No Doubt- Hey Baby
After the rock and ska sound incorporated in their previous works, the group went dancehall and reggae with this huge comeback hit from them. During this song’s success, another song with the same title was also heard on the radio.

Britney Spears- …Baby One More Time
Everybody sang “oh, baby, baby” during the peak of this song. It was Britney’s song that entered her to superstardom. It was listed as one of the most iconic pop songs and videos. Among those songs in this list, this song is the most successful “baby” songs.

Plies ft. Ne-Yo- Bust it Baby
Going hip-hop this time, this one is the only hit of Plies to hit the top 10. Thanks to the catchy chorus sang by Ne-Yo.

Jennifer Lopez- Baby I Love You
Created during the time Jennife Lopez is so much in love with Ben Affleck, it is clear that her “baby” here is Ben. The song was successful in Europe, particularly in UK.
