Album’s Singles Review: Ariana Grande “Yours Truly”

Ariana Grande finally ventured into music after her stints in Nickelodeon channel. This album “Yours Truly”, was her first album and it contained R&B and pop songs which are too sweet to listen to, and has elements of 80’s soul on it. The album went to number in Billboard 200 and had managed to enter the top 10 in United Kingdom.

The Way
“The Way” was Ariana Grande’s carrier single for “Yours Truly” which she collaborated with Mac Miller who performed the rap part. Honestly, though, I didn’t find the need for a rap part of the song, but it is still great. In this song, there are nuances of Mariah Carey on Ariana’s voice. The song became Ariana’s first top 10 hit reaching 9th in Billboard charts.
Rate: 8.25 out of 10

Baby I
“Baby I” is more upbeat song compared to “The Way”. The pop R&B song is very catchy and I think sounds better than “The Way”. However, it peaked lower than her first single which this song went to number 21 on Billboard Hot 100.
Rate: 8.5 out of 10

Right There
“Right There” was released to be her third single from “Yours Truly” which she performed with then boyfriend Big Sean. The song didn’t deviate from the sound she had from her 2 preceding singles. The song charted but only at 82 in Billboard singles chart.
Rate: 8.25 out of 10

Almost is Never Enough
“Almost is Never Enough” was used for “The Mortal Instruments” movie and which she sang with Nathan Sykes, who at time is still with The Wanted. The R&B ballad charted both in US and United Kingdom.
Rate: 8.75 out of 10

Popular Song
“Popular Song” is actually a song by Mika with Ariana Grande which was eventually included for “Yours Truly”. The pop song is something I can hear from old Britney sound. The song peaked at number 87 in the US.

Billboard’s Facebook Page has Favoritism?

There are lot of people who liked the page of Billboard are whining about posting series of their articles focused in certain artists.

Looking back when Beyonce had broken records after releasing an album by surprised. Lots of articles from their websites are posted on Facebook. I wonder why they couldn’t post an article about her since what’s written in different articles are almost the same. They even predict artists who can possibly do the same. Of course, anti-Beyonce are so fed up of those posts.

Taylor Swift as always been a subject in Billboard articles too, which were shared in social media. When her album “1989” was released, almost everyday, there were number of new posts about the album. Whatever Taylor Swift posts on Twitter or Instagram, Billboard raves for it. Even her charitied or even every step she do, Billboard makes it a big news. How about haters of Taylor, they whine about it makes them hate, hate, hate, hate not just Taylor, rather Billboard too.

When Justin Bieber came back, well, Billboard treated him like a king. He surfaced the Billboard page. Either he is here or there. His new pictures on Twitter and Instagram, you don’t have to check his social media accounts, just go to Billboard, it’s always there.

When Adele released her new single then “Hello”, it is all over the news. EitherĀ  it goes to number one, it breaks record, it reached a billion views on YouTube, her TV appearances, etc. What more when it broke records as the fastest selling album ever? From the first day of released to its full week of release, sales and predictions was always updated daily.

Recently, we saw Rihanna’s new release. So “Anti” album trended. Her new song and her new video for “Work” also trended.

Now, Ariana Grande is the center of their attention. She did a great impression of different artists on Fallon. She performed on SNL. Now, she has a new song which is now trending.

So what more will trend on Billboard? Let’s see what they got again.

Songs You Can Often Hear in Malls

When you are in a mall, you can hear loud music being played. Without music, shopping experience would be boring. I don’t mean the surroundings would be silent, rather, all you can hear is the noice from people chattering which is irritating to the ears. With music, it can neutralize the annoying noise and delightful sounds. While going to different malls, I often hear almost the same music so I made a lists of songs that I often hear.

Sia- Chandelier
This song is always played everywhere. You can even hear employees singing the song.

Charlie Puth and Meghan Trainor- Marvin Gaye
I even hear this song sang by a child while in a mall. I was like, do you know what the song means?

Selena Gomez- Hands to Myself
I rarely hear her great song “Same Old Love ” in malls. But this new song by Selena Gomez was already played in a mall.

Justin Bieber- Love Yourself
This song by Justin Bieber is becoming overplayed. Even cover versions were even played is malls.

Charlie Puth- One Call Away
Charlie Puth seems becoming a favorite in malls. Aside from “Marvin Gaye”, this sing is becoming overplayed as well.

Jessie J, Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj- Bang Bang
This song is still played often, and if airplay in malls was included in music charts, it might still be in the top 10.

Sheppard- Geronimo
To be honest, I first heard this song in the mall. Since it is catchy and the lyrics amde it easier to guess the title, I downloaded the song. Until now, it is still often played in malls.

Ed Sheeran- Thinking Out Loud
Well, this song is still overplayed in malls for more than a year ago. However, it has declined at the moment.

Meghan Trainor and John Legend- Like I Never Lose You
The ballad is lovely and often played on radio. It is also overplayed on radio.

Carly Rae Jepsen- I Really Like You
The word “really” may have been overused, but it seems employees in the mall never gets tired of it.

10 Songs With “Time”

When we refer to “time”, it doesn’t always mean the exact time, rather doing a thing again, like one “time” or two “times”. That’s how the word worked in some songs. Here are some of the songs with “time”:

Britney Spears- …Baby One More Time
This song was also part of my list with “10 Songs With More”. It was a huge worldwide hit in 1999.

Justin Bieber- One Time
Just one of the puppy love songs from a teenager. This song was Justin’s first ever single which became a top 20 hit especially in US and UK.

Semisonic- Closing Time
When it’s closing “time”, no more customers will be accepted and time for the workers to have fun. The song may not reach a high peak but it was popular in rock charts and heard in movies and TV programs. It is one of my favorite songs in 1998.

Recap: Your Face Sounds Familiar 2 (November 28 and 29, 2015)

I have been away last week due to being out of town so I am quite late for this recap. Anyway, to keep up with the episodes, I got to watch online with the performances. It has been an exciting week since the artists are performing with last season’s artists and impersonated duets of some icons.
Here are the performances from last week:

Denise Laurel as Barbra Streissand / Jay-R as Brian Adams
“I Finally Found Someone”
The performance good when it comes to vocals of the pair. The looks were quite good, though Jay-R’s look is more spot-on.

Kean Cipriano as Mick Jagger / Tutti Caringal as David Bowie
“Dancing in the Street”
I enjoyed the performance knowing they are copying the two British rock legends. The make up is perfect while the moves of Jagger is also there.

Eric Nicolas as John Travolta / Melai Cantiveros as Olivia Newton John
“Summer Nights”
It was an entertaining performance since the duo are copying 1970s acts. Thr dancing, moves though lacking in vocals.

Kakai Bautista as Ariana Grande / Maxene Magalona as Iggy Azalea
“Problem”
It seems everybody are doing well and I love this performance too. Knowing the range of Ariana, Kakai hit the notes.

Myrtle Sarosa as Kylie Minogue / Edgar Allan Guzman as Jason Donovan
“Especially for You”
It’s a good performance though the vocals isn’t exactly how it is. The appearance isn’t perfect too.

Sam Concepcion as Andrea Bocelli / Jolina Magdangal as Celine Dion
“The Prayer”
The performance is moving as Sam really did well copying Andrea’s voice. I think this is the best performance for the week knowing Sam as a pop and R&B singer and he did it perFectly.

Michael Pangilinan as Luther Vandross / Karla Estrada as Mariah Carey
“Endless Love”
Michael really did well copying Luther’s voice knowing his voice is far from Vandross. Karla did a good supporting as well.

Kz Tandingan as Shakira / Nyoy Volante as Beyonce
“Beautiful Liar”
It’s an enjoyable performance as KZ perfectly copied Shakira’s vocals. With regards to the moves, it was fine. Shakira didn’t move much in the music video unlike in her own videos.

The results below
1. Sam Concepcion
2. Denise Laurel
3. Kean Cipriano
4. Michael Pangilinan
5. Kakai Bautista
6. KZ Tandingan
7. Eric Nicolas (tie)
8. Myrtle Sarosa (tie)

Congratulations to Sam Concepcion as he really deserved it with his moving performance.

Your Face Sounds Familiar Season 2 airs on ABS-CBN 2 every Saturday and Sunday nights.

Most Iconic Songs Written by Max Martin

Pop music has been successful ever since. During the last two decades there’s this songwriter who made a mark in music industry after he had written some of the biggest pop hits during the period. It was no other than this pop genius Mr. Max Martin.

Max is the mastermind in formulating pop hits of Backstreet Boy, NSYNC, Britney Spears, etc. during the late 1990s and early 2000s. He had also produced some dance and rock hits for many artists.

Here’s the twelve list I made which became iconic hits:

Britney Spears- …Baby One More Time
Who can forget this song that introduced Britney to the pop music scene? This song was a staple in music charts worldwide when it reached the summit and opened a way for pop music to dominate the charts during that era.

Katy Perry ft. Snoop Dogg- California Gurls
Katy Perry just scored her second number through this song. Actually, it’s the second time for Katy Perry to top the charts with co-songwriting with Max Martin.

Taio Cruz- Dynamite
This is one of the most successful EDM songs co-written by Max Martin. In fact, tge song was even more popular than the artist himself. It was a huge selling single when released.

Backstreet Boys- I Want it That Way
This song may had fall short to top the US chart as it only sat at sixth position, it was a worldwide number hit and considered as BSB’s most successful song. The pop hit was very much remembered for its catchy midtempo tune.

Bon Jovi- It’s My Life
Who would’ve thought this song was co-written by Max Martin? I never though he did too. This song helped reintroduced the band which eventually reached the US top 40 and the top ten in other territories.

NSYNC- It’s Gonna Be Me
The song became the boyband’s first number one song by which Max Martin deserved a big credit for creating its lovely tune.

Ellie Goulding- Love Me Like You Do
Max Martin got sensual as he wrote this track for the erotic film “Fifty Shades of Gray”. The song became one of the most memorable pop songs this 2015 after topping the charts worldwide as well as top 3 placement in the US.

Ariana Grande ft. Iggy Azalea- Problem
She may already scored a top ten single but through this song, Ariana became more popular internationally. Thanks to Max Martin who co-penned the song.

Katy Perry- Roar
Katy Perry never forgot Max Martin to work with her in records. Her collaboration with this song brought Katy Perry to a new heights when it became among of her number one hits.

Taylor Swift- Shake it Off
After successful collaboration doing pop songs in her last country album “Red”, she decided to work with Max again for her first ever full-length album. The result? It became a blockbuster album and made Taylor the most influential act this 2015.

Pink- So What
Pink is a self-professed rock star and she worked with pop producer Max Martin to create this song. The song became a worldwide smash as it became her first ever solo chart-topper.

Kelly Clarkson- Since You’ve Been Gone
This song may have been hindered to reach the topspot and settled in top 5 in several countries, but this song became one of the biggest singles in 2005 and contributed to Kelly’s superstardom.

Some facts from Wikipedia

Artists who ripped off their own songs

There has been issues that some artists ripped off songs from other artists and copyright issues happened as some got sued. Some cases was resolved while others turned into a dispute.

Meanwhile, there are some artists who ripped off their own songs as their latest songs sounded as their old songs. It’s not a problem though as it is the same artists. Likewise, such songs may be from the same songwriter or producer. Here are some of the artists who made songs of then similar to their old songs. The songs that are mentioned here came from different albums.

Spice Girls
When “2 Become 1” was released and became a huge hit, you can hear other ballads from the girls which sounds like the sisters of the hit song. Let’s consider “Goodbye” and “Headlines”, try listening to them after another, you will feel like it’s just a single lengthy song.

Britney Spears
Britney had actually some songs in her first two albums sounding alike especially some unreleased tracks. But the most apparent was “…Baby One More Time” and her second album’s carrier “Oops… I Did it Again”. Apart from the sound, there’s another that connects the two songs, it’s the ellipses in the title. I also noticed the similarity of “I’m a Slave for You” and “Me Against the Music” though the latter was more fast paced.

Backstreet Boys
Backstreet Boys had the same producers during their glory days so it is possible that their songs will sound alike. Consider “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)” and “Larger than Life”. The songs have something in common while the latter is louder. But I noticed “I Want in that Way” as a twin brother of “Shape of My Heart”.

One Direction
To follow the success of their album “Up All Night”, the guys imemdiately released their second album “Take Me Home” which was led by “Live While We’re Young”, a song which is like their first ever single “What Makes You Beautiful”. Anyway, “…Beautiful” sounds more memorable.

Linkin Park
The rock band was known for the success of their album “Hybrid Theory”. But I noticed some similarities in their songs. I sensed the similarity of “In the End” and “Numb” despite the former has more on rap part.

Ariana Grande
Ariana Grande just released her new song called “Focus”. The song sounds like a rip-off of her own song “Problem”. The latter mentioned song is better and “Focus” sounds like a poor rip-off.
