Top Rock Songs since the last 20 years

Rock music somewhat ruled certain years during the last 20 years. Here is the list of 15 rock songs I made based on my choices during the said duration of time. (The list is not based on sales, etc)

Evanescence- My Immortal
The song is originally an entire ballad but mixed with hard guitars at the last chorus when released as a single. The song itself and Amy Lee’s voice is hunting that it reached the depth of you. It reached the top ten in several countries.

Coldplay- Speed of Sound
This light rock from “X&Y” album has something in its sound that’s so scientific. I can’t explain what it is but that’s how I feel for this song. It became their first US top ten hits and again a top 2 hit in their homeland UK.

Nickelback- Photograph
A song that will make you reminisce of the past. It was a huge hit in Billboard Hot 100 charts when released.

Matchbox 20- Unwell
When you’re feeling kind of lost after a sad thing happened, then you must be ‘unwell’. This rock ballad went to top 5 in Billboard Hot 100 and made a great impact in Asia.

Creed- With Arms Wide Open
This gives hope for everyone. It was like spiritual and showing love. This became Creed’s biggest hit elsewhere particularly in US where it peaked at number 2.

Alanis Morrisette- You Oughta Know
One of the earlier hit to blast at someone who broke a heart. Alanis knows how to carry it as you can feel the pain and anger in this song which eventually became a huge top 10 hits and a legendary rock song for most female artists today.

Buckcherry- Sorry
When you are repentant of what you did for a love one, then apologize. This song really expressed the apology and the pain of consequence. It is the biggest hit of the band hitting the top 10 of Billboard Hot 100.

Linkin Park- Shadow of the Day
There’s hope despite the blurry things going on. That’s what Linkin Park is expressing through this song. The sound was a reminiscence of a U2 song, though different lyrically. It ended up a top 20 hit.

Keane- Somewhere Only We Know
The song is very sweet to the ears and enticing. It was a UK hit, while Lily Allen’s version went to the UK’s apex.

Coldplay- Yellow
Coldplay’s one of earliest hits, this song is hunting. I am not a fan then but realized teh beauty of the song and Chris Martin’s vocals.

Avril Lavigne- Complicated
The song that started Avril’s meteoric career, this pop rock song made Avril an icon in pop/rock music scene. It was one of the biggest hits of 2002, the year she debuted.

Oasis- Wonderwall
This is not really a hard rocking song but as Brit rock band, this remains one of the essential songs in rock especially in 1995.

Alanis Morrisette- Ironic
Alanis is making waves worldwide when this rose to fame. The song itself has meaning to it despite the criticism of usage of the word “ironic”. It still became her biggest hit though.

Evanescence- Bring Me Back to Life
When I first heard of the song, Amy Lee’s vocals is awesome & haunting. This song used for “Daredevil” movie was one of the biggest hits of 2003.

Linkin Park- In the End
The song’s rap and chorus was beautiful and that ordinary and non-rock fans loved this song. It remained the highest peaking song for LP in Billboard Hot 100 and one of the biggest hit in US in 2002.

Top Solo Female rockers

Rock music was often dominated by men as they intent to create fan base with male listeners. But it doesn’t mean rock music was listened by mostly men as there are lots of female fans of rock music too. As a result, there are female rockers who existed and they generated fans either male or female as their demographics.

I decided to create a list of these female rockers as solo artists who succeeded in the genre. Here are the top five list I made:

5. Michelle Branch- Her popularity came in late 2001 due to her hit top 15 hit “Everywhere” followed by more successful ” All You Wanted” and another top 40 hit in the US. Her 2 albums were platinum. Her music generated fans either young or adults. Teenagers loved her as she’s a teen at that time. While her sound and lyrics has more maturity.

4. Sheryl Crow- I loved her old song “Strong Enough” which was a big hit at that time, as well as “All I Wanna Do”. Her sound though was liek country rock. Her sound went harder through “If It Makes You Happy”, which is similar to Alanis Morrisette, who is extremely popularat that time. Her recent sound is lighter rock.

3. Avril Lavigne- She debuted with Michelle Branch as the top young female rocker, which Avril’s entry took the spotlight. Avril is more on teenage rock though. Her debut album “Let Go” scored big hits and meteoric number sales. She is eventually dubbed as the ‘pop rock princess’ and scored top ten albums.

2. P!nk- She may started as pop and R&B singer but decided to follow her heart and transferred to rock music via “Don’t Let Me Get Me”. She became more popular, even until now, she consistently sells millions of records and top ten hit songs. Though, her music was both pop and rock.

1. Alanis Morrisette- She may only had two officially big hit albums which “Jagged Little Pill” is the biggest selling album of its genre, Alanis remains the legend and the one who created the formula of rock in solo female rock musicians. You can hear the touch of Alanis in the music P!nk and Avril Lavigne. Her recent releases may not be successful as her first two international releases but she’s still remembered as an icon for many female rock musicians.

My Top 7 Mainstream Albums of 1995

My interest in music came in 1995 and I decided to make my lists of favorite mainstream albums yearly and in order.

1. Alanis Morissette- Jagged Little Pill

This album was released on mid-1995 and made more impact on 1996. It became a hit at the height of rock music, however, what made her exceptional is she’s female and put that feminism theme in rock music via “You Oughta Know”. Her vocals are so powerful that no other female rockers can match as heard in this album.

Top track: Perfect

2. Michael Jackson: HIStory: Past, Present and Future

Michael Jackson came up with this album with 2 discs. The first disc is a compilation of his past hits, while disc 2 contains new recordings. Most of his new recordings talks about social issues, his life and the controversies like how the media portrayed him. There were 2 cover songs in the album namely “Come Together” and “Smile”. What I love from this album is putting up his past music, the present ones, and look forward for future songs, as stated in the title.

Top track: Disc 1- Black or White

Disc 2- They Don’t Really Care About Us

3. Various Artists- Clueless OST

I love this film and the track listing of the soundtrack album fits really well. “Supermodel” was the main theme in this film.

Top Track: Fake Plastic Trees by Radiohead

4. Oasis- (What’s the Story) Morning Glory?

Despite the negative reviews in this album, it does not affect me loving it. It doesn’t even affect the album in terms of sales. It is their best album for me melodically and lyrically.

Top tracks: Don’t Look Back in Anger

5. Ace of Base-The Bridge

Talking about Europop music, Ace of Base has it. This may be just behind their debut “The Sign”, but still a good album for its positive message.

Top Track: Beautiful Life

6. Boyzone- Said and Done

Their music may be ballads and too cheesy but never mind, it had undeniably good tracks. It was the boyband’s first album and was a hit back in UK.

Top Track: Coming Home Now

7. TLC- Crazy Sexy Cool

This was released late 1994 but spent more weeks in 1995 in the charts. It was one of the decade’s best R&B album and shown more maturity from the group.

Top track: Waterfalls

Note: The ranking is not based on sales.
