Alanis Morissette- Jagged Little Pill: Top 10 Singles in US and UK / Memorable Lines of a Song

Alanis Morissette- Jagged Little Pill
United States- Alanis Morissette became a huge newcomer for hitting it big with her first international album “Jagged Litte Pill” which was certified 16x platinum by RIAA. it also produced a lot of hit songs and scored these top 10 hits:
You Oughta Know- #6
Ironic- #4
You Learn- #6
Alanis Morissette at least generated three top 10 hit singles from “Jagged Little Pill”. It started out with the iconic rock hit “You Oughta Know” for reaching number 6. While the single “Ironic” was her biggest hit at number #4, and succeeded by “You Learn” at number 6. She had other singles released but they were released as airplay singles and did very well in those charts.

United Kingdom- Alanis Morissette had scored a momentum from her album “Jagged Little Pill” in United Kingdom as well. It was even certified with enormous 10x platinum by RIAA. Six singles managed to chart but only few became a top 10 hit.
Head Ovet Feet- #7
It does show that Alanis Morissette only had one single to reach the top 10. That song was the fifth release “Head Over Feet” at number 7. Her second biggest hit from the album was “Ironic” at number 11. Her singles placement in the charts were “You Oughta Know” at number 22, “Hand in My Pocket” at number 26, “You Learn” at number 24, and the last single “All I Really Want” at number 59.

“Ironic” turned to be Alanis Morissette’s biggest hit from “Jagged Little Pill” in United States, though the second big hit in United Kingdom. However, I would be sharing the song “You Oughta Know” because of its iconic lyrics. It is one of the most notable break-up songs which can be in the category alongside other artists like Adele, Taylor Swift, etc. Check the angst in the song below with its chorus:

You Oughta Know
And I’m here to remind you
Of the mess you left when you went away
It’s not fair to deny me
Of the cross I bear that you gave to me
You, you, you oughta know

Music 10 A’s: Alanis Morissette to Adele

1. Alanis Morissette

I love Alanis Morissette’s music especially with her album “Jagged Little Pill”. It is just a very honest record, and Alanis is a deep songwriter and a good vocalist.

2. Apologize
This is a song from Timbaland with real vocals of Ryan Tedder along with his band One Republic. Melody-wise and story-wise, it’s a good song. No doubt, it became a huge hit song.

3. Always Be My Baby
A song by Mariah Carey during mid-1990’s. American Idol winner David Cook had its own rock version, but Mariah’s version is way better.

4. All Saints
The time they came out, it was like move over Spice Girls. Ther were the new girl band at that time to watch. They became successful, though, not as successful as the Spice Girls. I love their R&B and pop style.

5. All the Right Reasons
Actually, the best selling album by Canadian rock band Nickelback. It generated a lot of hits and ny favorite was “Photograph”. Take note, it’s a different song from Ed Sheeran.

6. As Long As You Love Me
It is one of the earliest hits of Backstreet Boys in 1997. It was a pop song, and my cousin and sister loves it because they were Backstreet Boys fans. Justin Bieber had an “As Long As You Love Me” song as well, but a totally different song.

7. Aqua
Going back to the second half of 1990’s, that was the time when Danish group Aqua became popular. Surely, a lot danced with their hits like “Barbie Girl” and “Doctor Jones.

8. Always
Bon Jovi’s hit songs back in early 1990’s. It is a rock ballad which was one of their most notable hits. I always thought its title was “Romeo was Bleeding”. Lol!

9. America
Not referring to the country, rather, the band America. Surely, they based theor name with their country. I like their hit “Horse With No Name”, which was sampled by MIchael Jackson in a song, likewise Janet Jackson for her “Someone to Call My Lover” song. I always hear their music as my brother had a CD of them.

10. Adele
She is actually one of the best vocalist and most successful singer at this time. Well, her “25” LP just became the fastest selling album.

Album’s Singles Review: Alanis Morissette “Jagged Little Pill”

Alanis Morissette already had two albums she released as a pop star before “Jagged Little Pill”. Nevertheless, this album became Alanis’ first international album, as well as her first rock album. It has great rock sounds, which she became an influence and inspiration to a lot of female rockstars after this album, particularly fellow Canadian Avril Lavigne, who was considered her successor. You Oughta Know
This song has been very iconic as female rock star, as well as one of the angry songs about their exes. It was such a song that gives you a release of anger and relief when involved in a painful relationship. I remember when Beyonce performed this song at the Grammys, but it is way different if Alanis sang it. It charted in some countries and became Alanis’ first US top ten single reachinh the 6th in Billboard Hot 100.

Albums that are more successful than its singles (1995-1999)

Part of being a successful recording artist and becoming an A-lister is when their albums sells millions and singles becoming big hits os music charts. However, there are albums from music artists who do sell a lot of albums but their singles from those albums are not radio hits. In 1995 to 1999, here are the notable albums which its singles did not match its success.

Alanis Morissette- Jagged Little Pill
This breakthrough album by Alanis Morissette was very successful and was one of the biggest selling albums which reached more than 30 million in sales. But none of the album’s singles went to number one either in US and UK. In Asia, their singles were successful though. Still, her singles did not match the success of the album

Oasis- (What’s the Story?) Morning Glory
Oasis became one of UK’s precious talents after this album becam extremely successful. The album was believed to have sold 20 million copies. However, only “Wonderwall” and “Don’t Look Back in Anger” made impact as singles internationally. In their hometown, UK, their singles did well though.

The Fugees- The Score
The Fugees became very popular then with this critically acclaimed album. The record became multiplatinum in 1996 and one of the biggest sellers that year. But the only single which made real impact was worldwide was “Killing Me Softly”. But in UK, their singles did very well.

Ricky Martin- Vuelve
Former Menudo member Ricky Martin achieved worldwide solo success through his album “Vuelve”. The album did very well and according to estimates, it has sold 8 million copies. However, the only single which gained success from the album was “The Cup of Life”.

Red Hot Chilli Peppers- Californication
Red Hot Chilli Peppers has been one of the biggest bands of the 1990s. But they achieved huge success with their comeback in 1999 through “Californication”. While no singles from this highly successful album ever made the top 10 in UK and most countries, but “Scar Tissue” went to US top 10.

The Offspring- Americana
In 1999, The Offspring went back with this album “Americana” which became known for their single “Pretty Fly ( For a White Guy)”. Trends and Cliches in Mainstream Music (1995-1999)

In music, there are different kinds of styles that are often followed by other artists. As it becomes a trend, new artist will come out in the same genre or style, or even established artists follow suit.

From 1995-1999, there are a lot changes in mainstream music world. Pop music has been dominating the era as new artists came out and putting those established artists behind. Here are some of the trends and cliches from 1995 to 1999.

Female rockers
In 1995, Canadian singer Alanis Morissette dominated the record sales off her hit album “Jagged Little Pill”. With her success, other female artists doing pop/rock released some records. Sheryl Crow may had success with her debut album, but it was just a light album. Her second album sounded edgier apparently in her song “If It Makes You Happy”. On late 1997, Natalie Imbruglia released her first album “Left Off the Middle, and her 1998 single “Big Mistake” sounds like an Alanis song.

Boybands
Different boybands existed like mushrooms from 1995-1999. Some bands though, failed to attain success. The most popular boyband this era was Backstreet Boys, while in Europe and Asia, Boyzone and others, did well too. In 1999, Irish boyband Westlife scored 3 UK number one hits which led to further successes. NSYNC achieved success in 1999 especially in US.

Girl Power phrase / Girl groups
British girl pop group Spice Girls became the most relevant artist during this era which their success was compared to The Beatles. However, the group took hiatus too early after Geri bidded goodbye. Girl power remains a relevant phrase until now. Girl groups though became a trend too. We heard and seen another UK girl group All Saints. Despite their edgy sound, they followed the Spice Girls as the second top girl group at that time, eventhough the Spice’s success was miles apart from them. Other girl groups who had short success were She Moves, Solid Harmonie, etc.

Movie Soundtrack Hits
Songs from a motion picture has become a trend in 1998 after Celine Dion’s hit from Titanic, “My Heart Will Go On”. Other soundtrack hits whicg followed suit were Goo Goo Dolls’ “Iris” from “City of Angels”, Marc Anthony and Tina Arena “I Want to Spend My Lifetime Loving You”, Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing”, which became second most successful soundtrack in 1999.

Teen female stars
In 1999, we saw the success of Britney Spears from her album and singles. She eventually became one of the biggest female artist of all-time. After her success, Christina Aguilera topped the charts worldwide too. Then we saw the birth in music of Jessica Simpson and Mandy Moore.

Latin music
Latin music became a trend again as we saw Ricky Martin climbs the chart in 1998, and popularity heightened in 1999 with his first English album. We also the success of Jennifer Lopez, Enrique Iglesias and Marc Anthony. All of these three artists achieved success with millions of records sold.

I kept hearing songs from the radio about a guy or even a girl who talks about being cheated and that angst was written down against the cheater. Here are some of the songs which made a mark in music with this theme.

Beyonce is sending the man away along with his things and thinking she can replace the cheating man in the song. Oh well, it still hurts though.

Rihanna- Take a Bow
Rihanna hates a lying and giving a standing ovation for acting as the best liar. Well, this song is full of sarcasm for the cheating guy.

This could have been believed as written for the then-pop princess Britney Spears. Justin just wants the girl to cry for him too.

Sam believes he’s not the one but there’s another one too. It means there are two. Okay, it should be re-titled to “we are two”.

Alanis Morissette- You Oughta Know
Alanis still feels the pain and wants to remind the cheating guy about what he did for going for another girl.

Britney Spears- Womanizer
Britney might have been victimized by a womanizer. But she just made a revenge on the music video, oops!

Taylor Swift- I Knew You Were Trouble
