Music Talks: Choice Top 7 British Soul Singers

7. Corrine Bailey Rae
You might have heard her soulful voice with her big hit “Put Your Records On”, a song which takes you to reminisce of the good old days, but she had some other soulful songs on her records.

6. Paloma Faith
She is one of the longest female soul singers in UK and had multiple platinum albums. She’s still around and releasing music. Her recent hit album was “A Perfect Contradiction” which was already 2x platinum, and the number 6 hit “Only Love Can Hurt Like This”. Her voice is a classic soul with such power.

5. Duffy
Duffy quickly became successful with her debut. She was known for her top-selling album “Rockferry” and the number 1 single “Mercy”. However, her success stayed there as her succeeding releases failed to gain momentum. She also has a great voice, amd I can hear similarity with Paloma Faith.

4. Leona Lewis
She rose to success through winning “X-Factor UK”. Sje quickly achieved a number 1 album with “Spirit” and number 1 single “Bleeding Love”. But her popularity has gone down low. But she is one of the best voices. If only she did a music like other soul singers did, she might still be around and relevant.

3. Joss Stone
She was known for her hit albums “Soul Sessions” and “Mind Body and Soul” which has gone multi-platinums. Her voice is very soulful which hits the heart when you hear her voice.

2. Amy Winehouse
She has one of the best voices, unfortunately, she was gone too soon. Her album “Back to Black” has been huge and one of the biggest selling album during the second half of 2000’s.  Her voice is soulful and powerful and was like taking you anywhere.

1. Adele
She can be the voice of her time, and it translates to huge album sales. She is currently the biggest selling singer after albums “21” and “25”. Her voice even slips through your heart as you can feel what she feels when singing and she even tells a story while signing.

Music 10 A’s: Alanis Morissette to Adele

1. Alanis Morissette

I love Alanis Morissette’s music especially with her album “Jagged Little Pill”. It is just a very honest record, and Alanis is a deep songwriter and a good vocalist.

2. Apologize
This is a song from Timbaland with real vocals of Ryan Tedder along with his band One Republic. Melody-wise and story-wise, it’s a good song. No doubt, it became a huge hit song.

3. Always Be My Baby
A song by Mariah Carey during mid-1990’s. American Idol winner David Cook had its own rock version, but Mariah’s version is way better.

4. All Saints
The time they came out, it was like move over Spice Girls. Ther were the new girl band at that time to watch. They became successful, though, not as successful as the Spice Girls. I love their R&B and pop style.

5. All the Right Reasons
Actually, the best selling album by Canadian rock band Nickelback. It generated a lot of hits and ny favorite was “Photograph”. Take note, it’s a different song from Ed Sheeran.

6. As Long As You Love Me
It is one of the earliest hits of Backstreet Boys in 1997. It was a pop song, and my cousin and sister loves it because they were Backstreet Boys fans. Justin Bieber had an “As Long As You Love Me” song as well, but a totally different song.

7. Aqua
Going back to the second half of 1990’s, that was the time when Danish group Aqua became popular. Surely, a lot danced with their hits like “Barbie Girl” and “Doctor Jones.

8. Always
Bon Jovi’s hit songs back in early 1990’s. It is a rock ballad which was one of their most notable hits. I always thought its title was “Romeo was Bleeding”. Lol!

9. America
Not referring to the country, rather, the band America. Surely, they based theor name with their country. I like their hit “Horse With No Name”, which was sampled by MIchael Jackson in a song, likewise Janet Jackson for her “Someone to Call My Lover” song. I always hear their music as my brother had a CD of them.

10. Adele
She is actually one of the best vocalist and most successful singer at this time. Well, her “25” LP just became the fastest selling album.

Billboard’s Facebook Page has Favoritism?

There are lot of people who liked the page of Billboard are whining about posting series of their articles focused in certain artists.

Looking back when Beyonce had broken records after releasing an album by surprised. Lots of articles from their websites are posted on Facebook. I wonder why they couldn’t post an article about her since what’s written in different articles are almost the same. They even predict artists who can possibly do the same. Of course, anti-Beyonce are so fed up of those posts.

Taylor Swift as always been a subject in Billboard articles too, which were shared in social media. When her album “1989” was released, almost everyday, there were number of new posts about the album. Whatever Taylor Swift posts on Twitter or Instagram, Billboard raves for it. Even her charitied or even every step she do, Billboard makes it a big news. How about haters of Taylor, they whine about it makes them hate, hate, hate, hate not just Taylor, rather Billboard too.

When Justin Bieber came back, well, Billboard treated him like a king. He surfaced the Billboard page. Either he is here or there. His new pictures on Twitter and Instagram, you don’t have to check his social media accounts, just go to Billboard, it’s always there.

When Adele released her new single then “Hello”, it is all over the news. Either  it goes to number one, it breaks record, it reached a billion views on YouTube, her TV appearances, etc. What more when it broke records as the fastest selling album ever? From the first day of released to its full week of release, sales and predictions was always updated daily.

Recently, we saw Rihanna’s new release. So “Anti” album trended. Her new song and her new video for “Work” also trended.

Now, Ariana Grande is the center of their attention. She did a great impression of different artists on Fallon. She performed on SNL. Now, she has a new song which is now trending.

So what more will trend on Billboard? Let’s see what they got again.

Battle of Same Song Title: Lionel Ritchie vs Adele / Maroon 5 vs Robin Schulz

This is such an interesting battle of same song titles because the two song titles were in one word. The two song titles has been seen in social media lately as well as in YouTube.

Lionel Ritchie vs Adele
“Hello”
Lionel Ritchie came out with this song, “Hello”, about thirty years ago. The song was a huge hit then and it reached number one in Billboard Hot 100. Recently, during the Grammy Awards which there’s a tribute for his contribution in music, Demi Lovato performed the song. It was a good version of hers though.

Adele is breaking music records via her third album “25”. The album’s carrier single “Hello” broke records too as a fast selling downloaded single and fastest tp reach a billion views on YouTube. The heartbreaking song went to number one worldwide, which of course included her native land United Kingdom, and the US charts where it stayed on top for 10 weeks.

Verdict:
Lionel Ritchie- Hello
Melody and Lyrics- 3.75 / Success- 4.0 = 7.75

Adele- Hello
Melody and Lyrics- 4.0 / Success- 4.75 = 8.75

Winner: Both had high points, but Adele still takes the lead of 1.0 in this “Hello” battle.

Maroon 5 vs Robin Schulz
“Sugar”
Maroon 5 came out last year with this funky and catchy song “Sugar”. The music video was notable for secretly crashing and performing in weddings. Though, it was claimed by many that it’s not real and scripted. The song was very successful worldwide reaching the top ten in many countries and sold millions. YouTube views even reached over a billion.

Robin Schulz came out with this song a few months after Maroon 5’s. But they were not the same song as Robin is a DJ who produced the song while the vocals was provided by Francesco Yates. The song went to number one in some countries, thus, it also charted in US and UK but at at lower position.

Verdict:
Maroon 5- Sugar
Melody and Lyrics- 3.5 / Success- 4.25 = 7.75

Robin Schulz ft. Francesco Yates- Sugar
Melody and Lyrics- 2.75 / Success- 3.75 = 6.5

Winner: It is clear that Maroon 5 won the battle for “Sugar” songs.

Top 5 Albums in My Playlist

Having a Spotify Premium account is such a blessing for music lovers that’s why I don’t mind paying a low subscription monthly since I can listen to songs and albums anytime I want. However, there are mainstream albums which I can’t listen on Spotify, particulary blockbuster albums like Taylor Swift’s “1989” and Adele’s “25”. So I just downloaded them online and I don’t have to go to the record stores to purchase it. Availing of music is already easier than ever before. As I look at my playlists, I listed down the albums that Iisten to lately. Here they are below, ranked from 5 to 1:

5. Florence and the Machine- How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful
I think this is one of the best albums in 2015. It is somewhat more spiritual and deep while Florence Welch’s voice remains so haunting. My favorite cuts from the album were “What Kind of Man” and the title track.

4. Justin Bieber- Purpose
I admit, I disliked Justin Bieber before. Even downloading this album, I am skeptical to do it because of his behavior before. But I still downloaded it to hear what he has to offer, and this album is far more better than his past songs for the maturity of sound, as well as the meaningful lyrics. My favorite tracks off the record were “Mark My Words” and “Company”.

3. Ed Sheeran- X
Still a big fan of this album despite being out for more than a year. Ed Sheeran is just an amazing singer, songwriter, and musician. He is sp deep with his songs. My favorite tracks from the album “Bloodstream” and “Thinking Out Loud”.

2. Coldplay- A Head Full of Dreams
I admit, I preferred Coldplay’s old melancholic rock sound. But people do gets tired of hearing the same music so they did some experimentation. I began to appreciate their sound when it changes. Their “Ghost Stories” album has become their full length record not to showcase their old sound and was more on pop, edm, electronic, synth and ambient. While their current album “A Head Full of Dreams” is their more adventurous record. My favorite cuts were “Everglow” and “Hymn for the Weekend”.

1. Adele- 25
Some people call it overrated but that’s what highly successful albums get. If she is good at telling her heartbreak story in “21”, the new one “25”, is like she’s talking to you and telling stories. You can feel it from her vocals and emotions being input in the songs. Her vocal prowess is just a bonus, the depth was even more showcased. My favorite tracks were “When We Were Young” and “All I Ask”.

Performances Highlights in Grammy Awards

Grammy Awards had just wrapped up and the winners were finally announced. Aside from unexpected winners, there treat performances. The highlight performances was the tribute to the legendary soul singer Lionel Ritchie, rock legend Lemmy, and the late David Bowie. The Lionel Ritchie tribute performers were R&B singer John Legend, pop stars Demi Lovato and Meghan Trainor, and country star Luke Bryan. After the artists mentioned performed, Luke and John escorted Lionel from the audience up to the stage and sung “All Night Long” as the closing of the performance. Hollywood Vampires made a hard rocking performance  too as a tribute to Lemmy.
Another tribute performance was Lady Gaga who paid homage to the late David Bowie. She’s dressed a la David Bowie. She is the perfect singer to do the tribute knowing Lady Gaga’s biggest influence was David Bowie which she vocally claimed when she is just starting as a mainstream artist. The background colorful effects of the performance is magnificent too.
Taylor Swift had a good performance top of her current single “Out of the Woods”. She has one of the most number of nominations this year after her highly successful album “1999”.
Justin Bieber finally performed on Grammy Awards too. It is his first time in the award show where he had his first win too as a featured artist for Skrillex and Diplo’s “Where are You Now?”, which he performed after an acoustic version of “Love Yourself“.
There were great duets too. I loved the performance of Andra Day and Ellie Goulding with the songs “Rise Up” and the popular “Love Me Like You Do”. Country stars Sam Hunt and Carrie Underwood performed a mash-up of their songs.
One of the best performance was the one from rapper Kendrick Lamar which receives a standing ovation. The Weeknd also did good performing his songs. Miguel sang his own version of Michael Jackson’s “She’s Out of My Life”.
Adele’s performance is one of the most awaited. However, sound problem occurred during the performance which affected the supposedly magnificent performance. In just a few seconds of her performance, the sound or audio was lost. It is supposed to be an intimate performance with her vocals and piano, but there’s guitar and bass sound in some part. It is obvious on Adele’s face and even her voice that she was bothered but she continued. After her performance, Adele received standing ovation despite the glitch.
To close the show, Pitbull and Robin Thicke performed with party sounds.

Songs Better Left to the Original Singers

There were a lot of hit songs nowadays that was often covered either by another or fellow manistream artist by the original singers, while mostly though were heard in YouTube. I used to listen to cobers on YouTube and Boyce Avenue has became one of by favorites. They had nailed a lot of songs in their own version, though, I couldn’t agree that they did very well in ALL of their covers. I heard a lot of cover songs lately on YouTube buy I wasn’t impressed in a lot of them. I couldn’t feel the sincerity in their versions and I think better leave those songs to the original singers.

Here are some of the songs being covered which should better left to the original singers:

Adele- Hello
I heard a cover verrsion of this song played on FM radio. I alao heard a lot of version of it on YouTube. However, I never heard a single version that went close to Adele’s version.  When doing a cover of any Adele song, make sure to even go close, if not match, to Adele’s.

Christina Perri- Jar of Hearts
This song had lots of cover versions on YouTube. I am not that impressed with their versions. I cannot feel the anger of Christina Perri in this song from those cover version. In fact, the video I had seen when a video did the song into American Sign Language is even more effective than those cover versions.

Sia- Chandelier
To sing this song, make sure you have a high voice because of the high notes it requires. But it shouldn’t be all about high notes. You should feel the pain the original siner felt when she sang this as it is based on her personal experience. That’s what’s lacking in those cover versions. You cannot feel the sincerity in their versions, aside from loud vocals which becomes irritating to listen to. Well, Sia had such a wonderful and unique voice. It’s only her who can sing the song beautifully and emotion catching.

Ed Sheeran- Thinking Out Loud
This song was often covered too. Since it is a love song, it can surely makes you fall in love and I felt that from Ed Sheeran’s version. Recently, I heard a cover version on the radio and I was annoyed. It was a female version and it should catch me if, for example, the girl is singing that song to me, but it lacks sincerity.  I could not feel the love in that version.

Anthems since 2012

There are a lot songs that were too overplayed on radio and even in establishments where they play songs. In my country, as netizens say in social media, such songs were jokingly considered as “national anthem”. Since 2012, I had listed songs which became very popular and are often sung by many people. On YouTube, there are a lot versions or covers of these songs. Here’s the list I made which year by year since 2012.

2012
Adele- Someone Like You
As a lot know, this song was written for Adele’s ex-boyfriend who broke her heart. You can feel there’s so much pain in this song and many people here can relate to it. The song has been a worldwide hit, and in my country, it was a sleeper hit.

2013
Pink and Nate Ruess- Just Give Me a Reason
When trying to rekindle the love with someone and putting aside what happened before, this song fitted to a lot of people. This song has been an anthem and you can hear it everywhere you go. Hhmmm, I even feel this song was abused for being overplayed. Lol! Pink may had hits before but this became her biggest. What’s not to love in this song? A man and a woman exchanging what they feel and wants to go back together again with such a beautiful melody.

2014
John Legend- All of Me
Serenading the girl you love? This song got many girls in love the guys singing this song to them. I often hear this song sang by actors or singers on TV. Let’s not forget about Bumper Allen character of Pitch Perfect 2 where he sang this song when auditioning on The Voice. This song was also very successful worldwide.

2015
Ed Sheeran- Thinking Out Loud
I am already a fan of Ed Sheeran but became a bigger fan with this song when I first heard it. It was not yet popular at that time and I always play this song while working. However, when it began to cross the radio and often sang on TV, I stopped playing the song. When it is beginning to slow down on radio, I played it again. The song’s success continued until the end of 2015 despite being released late 2014.

2016
Justin Bieber- Love Yourself
When Justin’s “Purpose” was released, I didn’t plan to download it on my Spotify account since I am not a Belieber. But I still downloaded it. The first song that I liked which was not released at that time is “Love Yourself”. The song started to pick up a lot of plays after “Purpose” was release. It can be considered as the anthem of 2016 as it is becoming overplayed on radio. It has a lot of cover versions on YouTube as well.
