Anthems since 2012

There are a lot songs that were too overplayed on radio and even in establishments where they play songs. In my country, as netizens say in social media, such songs were jokingly considered as “national anthem”. Since 2012, I had listed songs which became very popular and are often sung by many people. On YouTube, there are a lot versions or covers of these songs. Here’s the list I made which year by year since 2012.

2012
Adele- Someone Like You
As a lot know, this song was written for Adele’s ex-boyfriend who broke her heart. You can feel there’s so much pain in this song and many people here can relate to it. The song has been a worldwide hit, and in my country, it was a sleeper hit.

2013
Pink and Nate Ruess- Just Give Me a Reason
When trying to rekindle the love with someone and putting aside what happened before, this song fitted to a lot of people. This song has been an anthem and you can hear it everywhere you go. Hhmmm, I even feel this song was abused for being overplayed. Lol! Pink may had hits before but this became her biggest. What’s not to love in this song? A man and a woman exchanging what they feel and wants to go back together again with such a beautiful melody.

2014
John Legend- All of Me
Serenading the girl you love? This song got many girls in love the guys singing this song to them. I often hear this song sang by actors or singers on TV. Let’s not forget about Bumper Allen character of Pitch Perfect 2 where he sang this song when auditioning on The Voice. This song was also very successful worldwide.

2015
Ed Sheeran- Thinking Out Loud
I am already a fan of Ed Sheeran but became a bigger fan with this song when I first heard it. It was not yet popular at that time and I always play this song while working. However, when it began to cross the radio and often sang on TV, I stopped playing the song. When it is beginning to slow down on radio, I played it again. The song’s success continued until the end of 2015 despite being released late 2014.

2016
Justin Bieber- Love Yourself
When Justin’s “Purpose” was released, I didn’t plan to download it on my Spotify account since I am not a Belieber. But I still downloaded it. The first song that I liked which was not released at that time is “Love Yourself”. The song started to pick up a lot of plays after “Purpose” was release. It can be considered as the anthem of 2016 as it is becoming overplayed on radio. It has a lot of cover versions on YouTube as well.

Trends and Cliches in Mainstream Music (Since 2010)

Since 2010, there are a lot of changes in music industry and we also witnessed how album sales went down. Though, we saw the success and record breaking success of Adele as the most successful artist in this era. Here are some of the trends and cliches in music industry since 2010:

Electronic dance music (EDM)
Electronic dance music continued to dominate all the genres. We heard successful records from David Guetta, Avicci, Calvin Harris, Zedd, and a lot more. Even most pop stars and even R&B singers sung a lot of dance music, showing how popular the genre is. Some of them were Rihanna, Beyonce, Chris Brown, Britney Spears, Usher, and a lot more.

Music crossover to pop
There were a lot of artists who changed or tried other genres which led to their notable success, though some did not succeed. Maroon 5 may already had pop hits before 2010, however, they became full time pop band with their 2012 album “Overexposed” and their recent “V”. Taylor Swift is the most successful in crossing over to pop. She gave a taste of pop tunes in her partly pop, partly country album “Red”. With her latest album “1989”, she became a fully-pledged pop star.

Formerly teen stars going sexy
There were a lot young stars before 2010 who took the “good girl, gone bad” route. Miley Cyrus became the most controversial who went naked in “Wrecking Ball”, magazine covers, parties and the raunchy performance on VMA 2013. Selena Gomez also went naked in her current album cover “Revival” and music video. Demi Lovato also went sexier on her new album “Confident”.

Million selling first week
It seems the phenomenon during first half of 2000s is happening since 2010 despite the sales are going down with albums. Taylor Swift has the most nunber of albums to reach the million threshold. Her third studip release “Speak Now” reached over 1.04 million on its first week according to Soundscan. Her fourth album “Red” sold higher with 1.21 million, while her recent and current album exceeded 1.28 million. But the recordbreaker and fastest among all was Adele’s “25”, which exceeded 3.38 million.

Soundtracks
Soundtrack albums did well since 2010. “Frozen” is the most successful which became very successful in 2014. Other successful soundtracks were “Fifty Shades of Grey”, Pitch Perfect 1 and 2, “Furious 7”, “Glee” albums, and a lot more.

Retro music
It seems retro and old music is incorporated in music of some pop stars. Meghan Trainor is known for her pop, soul and doo wop sound on her “Title” album. Charlie Puth incorporated Motown sound on his music, and the 80’s sound on Carly Rae Jepsen’s sound on her “Emotions” LP.

Surprise releases of albums
Beyonce broke record for releasing surprise album and went to number 1 with massive sales. Other artists followed suit which included Drake.

In music, there are different kinds of styles that are often followed by other artists. As it becomes a trend, new artist will come out in the same genre or style, or even established artists follow suit.

From 1995-1999, there are a lot changes in mainstream music world. Pop music has been dominating the era as new artists came out and putting those established artists behind. Here are some of the trends and cliches from 1995 to 1999.

Female rockers
In 1995, Canadian singer Alanis Morissette dominated the record sales off her hit album “Jagged Little Pill”. With her success, other female artists doing pop/rock released some records. On late 1997, Natalie Imbruglia released her first album “Left Off the Middle, and her 1998 single “Big Mistake” sounds like an Alanis song.

Boybands
Different boybands existed like mushrooms from 1995-1999. Some bands though, failed to attain success. The most popular boyband this era was Backstreet Boys, while in Europe and Asia, Boyzone and others, did well too. British girl pop group Spice Girls became the most relevant artist during this era which their success was compared to The Beatles. However, the group took hiatus too early after Geri bidded goodbye. Girl power remains a relevant phrase until now. Girl groups though became a trend too. We heard and seen another UK girl group All Saints. Despite their edgy sound, they followed the Spice Girls as the second top girl group at that time, eventhough the Spice’s success was miles apart from them. Other girl groups who had short success were She Moves, Solid Harmonie, etc.

Songs from a motion picture has become a trend in 1998 after Celine Dion’s hit from Titanic, “My Heart Will Go On”.
