Memorable Dance Sequences in Music Videos

We rarely see singers nowadays doing their dance sequences on their music videos. A decade ago, most artists inserts dance sequences on their videos which was adorn by many due to the artists’ skills. This is to pay homage to best dancers and singers at the same time.

Beyonce- Run the World (Girls)
The video was known for its heavy choreography. The dance movements which starts with moving her shoulders and known for usage of tap dance inspired some artists performing on TV. The song may performed moderately in the charts but it played a big influence in music.

Backstreet Boys- Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)
It’s horror theme was inspired by Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” had a extended dance sequence version. The steps are simple but it is well remembered.

Britney Spears- …Baby One More Time
She was adorn through her talent as singer and a dancer (some may disagree due to her frequent lip synching) and this video is her earliest hit. She’s really a good dancer if you have seen this video for the first time since it is loaded with dance moves.

Usher- Yeah!
I once thought Usher as to be the next Michael Jackson of his talent in dancing, however, his success was not sustained. In this video, we saw his skills and I love how laser light is flashing during the dance sequence.

Michael Jackson- Thriller
This is one of the earliest videos with great dance sequence. The zombie steps had a great influence on a Backstreet Boys video, and considered as one of the best videos of all time.

Jennifer Lopez- If You Have My Love
This is the first ever video of Jennifer Lopez and she had showcased her skills as in the video, where there’s extended dance sequence. She doesn’t even need dancers in the sequence as she did it alone.

NSYNC- Bye, Bye, Bye
The choreography in the video is iconic due to its steps like with strings on their hands being controlled. Such formula was taken for their next song “It’s Gonna Be Me”.

Janet Jackson- Rhythm Nation
The choreography makes it her most iconic in music and considered Janet Jackson as one of the best dancer-singer. It’s military theme, dancing with a chair and some steps influenced other artists in their music videos.

Beyonce- Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)
Considered as one of the best videos ever (became a Video of the Year awardee in VMA), it is just a simple video with plain background. What makes this video iconic is in fact is its simplicty. She danced from the beginning to the end of the video, only with three dancers and an amazing choreography.

Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson- Scream
I picked this as number one because it showcased the siblings’ great talent in dancing and not because it is the most expensive music video ever. It’s sci-fi theme is good but I love their dance sequence.

Artists who ripped off their own songs

There has been issues that some artists ripped off songs from other artists and copyright issues happened as some got sued. Some cases was resolved while others turned into a dispute.

Meanwhile, there are some artists who ripped off their own songs as their latest songs sounded as their old songs. It’s not a problem though as it is the same artists. Likewise, such songs may be from the same songwriter or producer. Here are some of the artists who made songs of then similar to their old songs. The songs that are mentioned here came from different albums.

Spice Girls
When “2 Become 1” was released and became a huge hit, you can hear other ballads from the girls which sounds like the sisters of the hit song. Let’s consider “Goodbye” and “Headlines”, try listening to them after another, you will feel like it’s just a single lengthy song.

Britney Spears
Britney had actually some songs in her first two albums sounding alike especially some unreleased tracks. But the most apparent was “…Baby One More Time” and her second album’s carrier “Oops… I Did it Again”. Apart from the sound, there’s another that connects the two songs, it’s the ellipses in the title. I also noticed the similarity of “I’m a Slave for You” and “Me Against the Music” though the latter was more fast paced.

Backstreet Boys
Backstreet Boys had the same producers during their glory days so it is possible that their songs will sound alike. Consider “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)” and “Larger than Life”. The songs have something in common while the latter is louder. But I noticed “I Want in that Way” as a twin brother of “Shape of My Heart”.

One Direction
To follow the success of their album “Up All Night”, the guys imemdiately released their second album “Take Me Home” which was led by “Live While We’re Young”, a song which is like their first ever single “What Makes You Beautiful”. Anyway, “…Beautiful” sounds more memorable.

Linkin Park
The rock band was known for the success of their album “Hybrid Theory”. But I noticed some similarities in their songs. I sensed the similarity of “In the End” and “Numb” despite the former has more on rap part.

Ariana Grande
Ariana Grande just released her new song called “Focus”. The song sounds like a rip-off of her own song “Problem”. The latter mentioned song is better and “Focus” sounds like a poor rip-off.

Album Review: Justin Bieber and One Direction

And so the battle has started for the two of the biggest pop acts with their new records going head to head to one another. Justin Bieber first announced the release date of his supposed huge comeback with “Purpose”. After a while, One Direction also announced their released date which conincided with Bieber’s. Now the big question is, who will claim victory for the top spot? Here’s a review for the two albums which is battling for pop supremacy.

Justin Bieber- Purpose
Few yeard ago, Justin Bieber struggled after some troubles he got involved in. It seems many people has turned their back against him by which some fans did and her last effort “Journals” flopped, which is the result of negativity surrounded him. Recently, Justin Bieber has been apologetic for all his wrong actions and when his new single “What Do You Mean?” was released, it seems people has forgiven him. Good critical reviews and commercial outcome was good for the song which now led to the releaer of his comeback album.
Honestly, I have always been biased against Justin Bieber because of his past actions. I couldn’t even take listening to his songs. I am even skeptical to listen and even write review about his new album. But when I heard “What Do You Mean?”, I made a positive review of it, even followed by “Sorry”. Since the battle of the records between him and One Direction, I decided to listen to the entire album, and to be honest, I forgot all that he did and begun to love the album.
The album is consisted of R&B tunes with electronic elements, pop and ballads. His vocals has even matured well. I can feel the sincerity and he really is apologetic. I love how the albun didn’t put something explicit. Most of the songs are upbeat, though vocals were slow-paced but it fitted. It’s like a breathy album that crosses your ears.
Notable tracks: “Mark My Words” (a ballad which started the album is good if it is like this song); “What Do You Mean?” (the song made me listen to the entire album); “Love Yourself” (a beautiful and melodic ballad in acoustic); and “All In It” (a midtempo song that’s fresh to listen to).
Rating: 9 out of 10

One Direction- Made in the A.M.
Earlier this year, One Direction member Zayn Malik left his group which led to questions about the future of the boyband. The remaining members, however, promised to keep it together and announced that they will still record an album which led to the production of “Made in the A.M.”. After few months, the group, nevertheless, announced hiatus early next year and this album may be their last before hiatus. It’s early to predict though if they will release a new album in the future. Then they released the recordbreaking single “Drag Me Down” which opened massively with sales and streaming. The group however, didn’t embark a massive promotion for the album.
The album contains pop and pop/rock as they started through “Midnight Memories” LP. Nonetheless, that time, I was not convinced by their rock tunes except the beautiful “Story of My Life”. In this album, I was now convinced why they maintained their success in a span of five years in the business. But with the songs, I am only convinced with the vocals of Liam and Harry. I was bothered by the vocals of Louis and Niall as they lacked substance.
Notable tracks: “Drag Me Down” ( this is a good song but I feel the structure was comparable with Taylor Swift’s “I Knew You Were Trouble”); “Perfect” (This is like a male version of Taylor Swift’s “Style”, though has a better beat); “History” (hoping to become the next single); and “Olivia” (a more pop version of Mika’s “Grace Kelly”)
Rating: 8.75 out of 10

Album Reviews: Janet Jackson and Selena Gomez

Janet Jackson- Unbreakable
Janet Jackson came back after many years away from the limelight. The last record she released was the number one (but underperforming album) “Discipline”. With many negativities against her since the controversial nip-slip in 2004 which led to the decline of sales from her albums “Damita Jo”, “20 Y.O.” and the album mentioned above.
The album has great message on it and shows courage from her not to follow the current trends. It is not formulaic unlike other artists who do what’s usually heard in the radio. Her voice has matured too but never sounded dull. The album is more about positivity and her life.
Notable tracks: “The Great Forever” (I can hear Michael Jackson in her voice and it sounds like a tribute to her late brother); “Shoulda Known Better” (it starts slow at the beginning and the beat goes fast in the chorus with synth on its music); “Well Travelled” (the kind of ballad that I never thought would sound good, the best ballad from the album); “Lessons Learned” (this is a classic ballad).
Rating: 9.25 out of 10

Selena Gomez- Revival
Selena finally left her bubblegum pop sound and has gone matured through thos new record. According to her, her influence for the record was Christina Aguilera who broke out with her LP “Stripped”, leaving behind her old bubblegum sound.
The album was loaded with more matured pop, EDM, R&B and ballad. She finally found her sound that will fit her voice. Her vocals has shown so much vulnerability and more convincing.
Notable tracks: “Revival” (a good opener for an album); “Good for You” (she showcased her vocal capability to sound different for her usual, I like the fact thay it sounds like Lana del Ray); “Same Old Sound” (this is classic, not formulaic, and I love hearing Charlii XCX on it); and “Camouflage” (she’s shown so much vulnerability in this song).
Rating: 9 out of 10

Music Crossover

Many artists who are stuck in a genre sometimes crossover to a genre they don’t use to. It may be to offer something different or to gain more fans. A lot of them succeeded, though some struggled in their new genre. Here are some of the artists who made crossover with their music

Taylor Swift
She may be the most successful artist who crossed over to pop recently. From a country artist who sits with her guitar, her pop crossover was well received and even gained fans not just in United States, but also in countries where she has minimal fanbase particularly in some European countries. In UK, she gained a lot of fans which is apparent with her chart positions since her albums “Red” (combination of pop and country) and “1989” (a full length pop album).

Maroon 5
They were known as a rock band with their debut “Songs About Jane”. However, they graduation turned into a pop band as time goes by from “It Won’t Be Soon Before Long” until pop tunes became more popular through their LP “Overexposed”, which they took that formula for their current album “V”.

As a British alternative rock band, we heard their melancholic rock tunes from their first four albums. In fact, in every album they released, they offered something new. But with their album “Mylo Xyloto”, their usual sound has changed until “Ghost Stories” with more pop, EDM and synthpop sound. Still, their albums were successful.

One Direction
From powerpop and bubblegum pop, the British boyband gradually shifted to a more pop/rock sound through “Midnight Memories”. They adapted the sound but even got matured through “FOUR” and their current “Made in the A.M.”.

Lady Gaga
We’ve known her as the outrageous performer with EDM and pop music. With her successes during those era, she toned down and did something that she gained acclaim as a jazz singer with “Cheek to Cheek”, an album with legendary jazz singer Tony Bennett. The jazz album became a Grammy awardee and a chart-topper.

Top Rock Albums Since 2000: U2, Kings of Leon, Bon Jovi

U2 seems to have made mark in three decades since 1980s for scoring big albums during each a decade. Kings of Leon finally made an album which they can surely be proud of for its success. While Bon Jovi returned with after a half decade.

U2- All That You Can’t Leave Behind
U2 used to be one of the biggest rock band of all time after hit abums every decade and made a big album during tge last quarter of 200 through “All That You Can’t Leave Behind”. This album became their biggest album since 2000 and made a mark at the Grammys along with quadruple platinum sales in the US. The album also marks comeback to rockier sound after electronic sound from their previous effort.

Kings of Leon- Only By the Night
Kings of Leon finally released an album which made a mark in rock music scene. This album “Only By the Night” became definitive for the band as apart from the multi-million sales of the LP, it secured a UK million selling single “Sex on Fire” and the bigger hit “Use Sonebody” which attained multiple platinum certifications in several countries.

U2- How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb
U2 actually scored another #1 album after this but due to less impact, this album can be cosidered their last highly successful album. With the worldwide smash rock song “Vertigo”, it contributed to the success of “How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb” when it opened at number anywhere else. At teh Grammys, it even became the most successful record winning all the nominations.

Bon Jovi- Crush
Jon Bon Jovi attempted solo record in 1997 but came back with the band through “Crush”, released in middle of 2000. The album was very successful especially in Europe thus leading this album and the track “It’s My Life” as one of the biggest albums and singles of 2000 respectively. It even paved a way for succeeding albums for the band.

Top Rock Albums Since 2000: Staind, Evanescence, Maroon 5, Green Day

There are some rock bands who did well since 2000, however, they had attained at least one album that has been definitive during the era.

Staind- Break the Cycle
With positive reception, Staind became huge finally with this album which eventually became one of the big rock albums in 2001. This album immediately shot to number 1 in the US and UK, which became multi-platinum and platinum respectively. “It’s Been Awhile” became a huge rock hit and became Staind’s signature song.

Evanescence- Fallen
The album first settled at the top 5 in Billboard 200 until it eventually peaked higher in the top 3. It can be considered as a sleeper hit as it is among the 10 albums with most number in sales in 2003 and 2004 due to the huge contribution of their hit songs, “Bring Me to Life” and its opposite with regards to its sound, “My Immortal”. They had another number 1 album but with less impact.

Maroon 5- Songs About Jane
Before going to more pop sound, Maroon 5 was then a rock band, but considered a light rock band. This debut album of them slowly picked up to the top 3 and became one of the biggest sellers of 2004 with the help of top 5 singles “This Love” and ” She Will Be Loved”. This album paved a way for them to superstardom. Their popularity continues but being a pop band, not a rock band.

Green Day- American Idiot
After less successful attempts to gain success before, Green Day finally redeemed their throne when this album “American Idiot”. It was hyped by 3 big top ten hits in the US as well as in other countries which includes the radio favorite “Wake Me Up When September Ends”. It also paved the way for another successful album, though with less impact “21st Century Breakdown”. Their trilogy albums released during the recent years failed to make impact in sales globally.

Recap: Your Face Sounds Familiar Season 2 November 15, 2015

Disclaimer: Posting was late as it was written while the show was ongoing last night.
The OPM special of Your Face Sounds Familiar 2 continues tonight. Last night, five artists performed namely KZ Tandingan, Myrtle Sarosa, Denise Laurel, San Concepcion and Kean Cipriano. Three artists are performing tonight and will impersonate three OPM icons.

Eric Nicolas as (and duet with) Andrew E
Eric becomes a rapper tonight as Andrew E. Being rapper is very difficult especially if you’re not a rapper, somethinh Eric has tried so hard as he admitted rapping is his weakness. The performance is not perfect but the effort is good. The look didn’t resemble Andrew E and I am not satisfied with it.

Michael Pangilinan as (and duet with) Marco Sison
Michael Pangilinan was being chosen by veteran OPM artist Marco Sison to impersonate him. It’s a decent performance though, I am not that satisfied with the performance. I am still looking for something that can convince me that the impersonation is really comparable to Marco.

Kakai Bautista as (and duet with) Jovit Baldivino
Kakai became a male rocker tonight as PGT winner Jovit Baldivino. It is a tough job to impersonate a guy by a woman especially with that range of voice. The look resembles a bit while the voice was understandabld but she did a good job. Tonight, she is the best performer.

With the episode from last night, I am not that satisfied with the make up and prosthetics. I prefer the regular episodes when they impersonate different kinds of artists.

My ranking for all the performances below:
1. Kean Cipriano
2. Kakai Bautista
3. Eric Nicolas
4. Denise Laurel
5. Myrtle Sarosa
6. KZ Tandingan
7. Sam Concepcion
8. Michael Pangilinan

But here’s the final ranking:
1. Kean Cipriano
2. Eric Nicolas
3. Kakai Bautista
4. KZ Tandingan
5. Denise Laurel
6. Sam Concepcion
7. Michael Pangilinan
8. Myrtle Sarosa

Next week’s episodes will feature Pinoy rock icons as the artists impersonates them.

Your Face Sounds Familiar Season 2 airs on ABS-CBN 2 every Saturday and Sunday night.

Recap: Your Face Sounds Familiar Season 2 November 14, 2015

It was quite late again for the show to air tonight but I still watched as tonight, it will be an exciting episode as all the artists are copying Filipino artists. Not just that, they are also performing alongside the artists they are impersonating.

The show was opened by Melai acting as the show’s host Billy Crawford. It is her poorest impersonation but as usual, she’s still hilarious. There are two guest judges for tonight taking the place of Jed Madela namely Rico J. Puno and former YFSF performer Karla Estrada.

Here are the performances last night:
KZ Tandingan as (and duet with) Charice Pempengco
KZ started the show as the Filipino international singer, Charice Pempengco with the hit song “Pyramid”. As we all know, Charice mentored KZ before on the hit reality competition “X-Factor Philippines”. Honestly, she don’t look like Charice maybe due to the shape of their faves. But her voice especially at the beginning sounded like Charice.

Myrtle Sarosa as (and duet with) Verni Varga
Verni Varga had chosen Myrtle to impersonate her. With her looks, Myrtle was even prettier than Verni and I could not see Verni in her. Good thing her movements were exactly Verni when she’s still younger.

Denise Laurel as (and duet with) Imelda Papin
Denise copied and dueted with the Jukebox Queen, Imelda Papin. I can see the similarity with them looks, though she lacked with the voice. The movements are okay, though Denise’s was classy as guest judge Rico J. Puno commented.

Sam Concepcion as (and duet with) Erik Santos
Sam’s turn to impersonate fellow ASAP Kapamilya Erik Santos. I was not impressed with the looks because I haven’t seen any resemblance. But I think she sang it well, it’s just that the judges focused on the voice which we cannot expect to be perfectly copied since a balladeer is different from a R&B artist.

Kean Cipriano as (and duet with) Richard Poon
Kean becomes a crooner this time as Richard Poon. The looks is a little close But the voice and their movements together were synchronized that made it a fun performance.

Honestly, I am not impressed with the make-up. Good thing the performers were able to copy other aspects from the artists they are impersonating.

Meanwhile, here’s my ranking for the five performers tonight:
1. Kean Cipriano
2. Denise Laurel
3. Myrtle Sarosa
4. KZ Tandingan
5. Sam Concepcion

There are three more performers tomorrow to check out.

Your Face Sounds Familiar Season 2 can be seen on ABS-CBN during Saturday and Sunday night.

Top Rock Albums Since 2000: Coldplay, Limp Bizkit and Creed

Some of the biggest rock albums since 2000 came from Coldplay, Limp Bizkit and Creed. The three may be in the same genre, but their sounds were very different.
Coldplay- Parachute
The album quickly became huge in tgeir native country in UK but took awhile to make impact in the US due to lack of strong single to support it. In UK, the album went more than 2 million with the success of “Yellow”, their first top ten in the country. It eventually sold millions in the US.

Limp Bizkit- Chocolate Starfish and Hotdog Flavored Water
After “Significant Other” sold like pancakes in the US, Limp Bizkit quickly released during the late 2000 their follow-up “Chocolate Starfish and Hotdog Flavored Water”. The album became the fastest rock album stateside after selling more than a million on its debut week, according to tabulator Nielsen Soundscan. It’s success spread throughout the world.

Coldplay- A Rush of Blood to the Head
The band released their spphomore album which released 3 hit singles which appeared in UK top ten. “Clocks” became a top 20 track in the US. The album eventually became the band’s biggest seller when it comes to numbers and one of the 10 biggest selling rock album during the era.

Creed- Weathered
With the diamond success of “Human Clay” in the US, this album followed which became a big seller in the US. The album picked up sales internationally too especially in Asia where their songs were widely received.

Coldplay- X&Y
Coldplay made huge impact due to critical acclaim and this album sold more than 700,000 in just a week in US. It eventually became the biggest album for 2005 alongside a big comeback from Mariah Carey. It also scored their first US top ten song.

Coldplay- Viva La Vida and Death and All His Friends
If only sales are not declining, this album could have been their biggest as it scored their biggest hit and first number 1 single ever. It also became the biggest selling album during the same year it was released.

Coldplay- Mylo Xyloto
The album may have sold lower than its preceding records, however, it amdw huge impact worldwide as it released more hit singles than ever.
