Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter

When I was about 16, I started reading this series. I was a little nervous at first because the first title is called Guilty Pleasures. It sounded like a romance novel, and I really wasn’t into it. But my mom was the one recommending it, and she said that it wasn’t bad at all. The title is just the name of the strip club where someone is murdered.

Anita Blake is a necromancer, meaning she can raise the dead into what we’d call a zombie. She works for the police, and they have her raise the dead to ask them questions like how they were murdered and such. She is also brought in on any preternatural cases because she has an uncanny ability to see the real story behind murders. In that world, things like vampires, shapeshifters, ghosts, and demons exist. So they have a whole task force associated with the police that investigate preternatural crimes.

I love these books. She gains powers, and eventually starts dating this werewolf teacher guy. I’m totally in love with the head vampire, though. His name is Jean Claude, and, according to vampire law, he is the leader of the city’s vampires. He is, obviously, French, and his description makes me think he’s super gorgeous. I am so much in love with this fictional character, it’s ridiculous. She dates him, eventually, too, and I love getting to see into his world through her eyes.

I also love this series because I love a little sci-fi with my romance. It’s so interesting to get to learn the rules and customs of the different communities, and it’s even more interesting to see how the different species interact. I highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys murder mysteries or ideas about how the monsters would interacted with society if they really existed.

I hope you enjoy! And don’t be scared of the titles. They’re all just names of places where crimes take place. No weird stuff.
