Sitting at Your Computer is straining..

We have all probably heard this, sitting at a computer all day can ruin your muscles, make you gain weight , cause carpel tunnel syndrome and so on and so on.  And it is true, sitting at a computer all day can strain your muscles and give you poor posture, it can cause back pain, wrist pain, leg pain, all sorts of pains. So how do you deal if your job demands you sit at a computer all day??

Unfortunately, with technology taking over, there is not much we can do to prevent from sitting at a computer, However, we can try to sit more correctly, but sitting up straight and not slouching over. Also, taking frequent but short breaks will help your eyes re focus, as well as help your body get less tense.

There are also other things outside of work you can do. After you are finished with work, try heading to the local gym for a Yoga class, or just getting in some type of exercise in will help your muscles not get tensed up and tight.

While you are on the clock, try standing to get some work done, choose a desk that is comfortable to sit and stand at or if laptops are an option take your work with you to a nearby standing desk. Ask your boss for  a more ergonomic chair (if it is in budget), or bring your own if you can.

Unfortunately, we can not get away from the computer, but there ARE ways we can help prevent the strain. Walking around the office and making some casual conversation with your co-workers will not only get you well known throughout the office, it will help your muscles relax throughout the day. Just try not to get the conversation too personal and keep it work focused as much as possible, you do not want to get in trouble with your boss!!

Why Trader Joes is Not Always Healthy

Many people including myself adore Trader Joes and their food at store. One helpful reason to their success is their lower prices to their health conscious competitors such as Whole Foods. Some people like to call Trader Joes the “poor man’s Whole Foods”. I do not One-hundred percent agree with this, since most Trader Joe shoppers are well off and professionals, it is relatively cheaper than Whole Foods.

When shopping at Trader Joes, you might get the idea that you are choosing a better item since it is from Trader Joes, and in most cases this would be true, but be careful some stuff in the store can trick you to think otherwise, especially that frozen food section!

Here are a few items that have higher calories, sodium or saturated fat than you might want in Trader Joe’s frozen food section:

Chicken Marsala and Mashed Potatoes TJs10

One serving of this Italian dish contains 480 calories, 15 grams of saturated fat , 110 milligrams of cholesterol and 750 milligrams of sodium. While the calories are not that bad for a full meal, the saturated fat is more than the equivalent of nine large eggs! If you do choose this dish, do not have it more than once a month.

Mac N Cheese Bites TJs9

If you are craving a quick and cheesy snack, you might want to think twice about this one. Trader Joes’ Mac N Cheese Bites contains 210 calories, 35 grams of saturated fat, 40 milligrams of cholesterol and 430 milligrams of sodium per serving! That is one heavy snack, especially if you are going to serve it to your kids! Be careful on this one maybe serve 1/4 of the serving???

Last but not least,  Trader Joe’s Mandarin Orange Chicken TJs4

Mandarin Orange Chicken is never a healthy option, whether its ordered from a take-out restaurant, frozen or even a fine dining restaurant. The Trader Joes version contains 320 calories, 3.5 grams of saturated fat (not that bad), 95  milligrams of cholesterol, 330 milligrams of sodium, not that bad compared to some other “frozen” Chinese food. In this dish the cholesterol is the killer here, still not a good choice to make for your dinner.

Even though these dishes are not good for your health, its okay to have them every ONCE in a while, keyword “once in a while”.

Eating Small Meals

Some people think there is a magic food that will help them lose weight and swear to only eat that food for a month. I don’t know about you, but I need variety in my life! I’ve always been a fan of eating small meals of food that I enjoy versus larger meals of food that I ehh do not really enjoy.

The saying holds true, “everything in moderation”. Even though if you do want to lose weight, you do need to up your vegetable intake and down your carb and sugar intake, it is healthy to  have a little bit of these things.

It only makes sense that if we cut our favorite foods completely, we will be in regret and hate the “diet” we are on. So, I say go ahead and indulge, just learn to stop. It is important to know which foods are better for you and which foods are not so good for you, this way you will have an easier time “stopping” on the not so good for you foods.

Reading books can be a powerful thing, and a great way to teach us some helpful hints on how to eat healthy. This book  Healthy Small Plates , will help you design delicious and healthy small plates that fit into your lifestyle!

A good rule of thumb to go by when designing your plate would be to make it colorful. Choosing a variety of color on your plate will entail that your plate is healthy (as long as the color is natural and not artificially colored). You also want to have some protein, starches and vegetables on every plate.

If you think you need more to eat, have a healthy snack two hours after your meal, this way you will not over indulge at meal time.

With the Holidays around the corner, you still want to keep the “small plate” mentality alive.

 

 

Exercise Won’t Replace Bad Eating Habits

Many people think to be healthier and lose weight they must hit the gym and exercise for many hours in a day. This is true to some point, however if you do not change you eating habits into healthier ones, you will never lose weight. If you continue to eat high sugary foods  that are highly processed then you will need to run an upwards of 4 miles a day just to burn off that one food. If you enjoy your “super sized” meals, you will need to run a marathon to work that off.

Another good point on eating healthy food would be healthier food will increase your energy giving your more energy to work out. Although we do need to exercise to live a healthier lifestyle, exercise alone is not the answer. In fact, expert nutritionists and personal trainers alike say that you should be following the 80-20 rule. That is 80% nutrition and 20% exercise. Even a personal trainer that gets paid when people exercise wants you to be mindful of what you eat verses how hard you work out!

In fact, if you have not exercised in a long time (or ever), you should be starting your routine slow and not push too hard, this can cause injury. Yes, you do want to push yourself once you have been working out for awhile.

Focus on eating whole foods first, and adding a little exercise in everyday, like walking, swimming, yoga, zumba and then you will see results!!

While exercise alone can not help you lose weight, eating a healthy diet rich in real whole foods along with a exercise will lead you to a healthier lifestyle and you will be a slimmer you in no time!

Why I Won’t Drink Diet Soda

When someone is trying to lose weight, they think “oh, I’ll just switch to diet soda”, since its zero calories and sugar it can’t harm them, right? This could not be further from the truth!!

According to Dr. Hyman in his article “How Diet Soda Makes you Fat,” he mentions that diet soda actually increases your body fat vs. helping you shave pounds off!! And why is this true?

Well, if losing weight was really about counting the calories and staying within your “calorie” goal, then why do diet soda drinkers not lose weight and in fact gain weight? (Studies have proven this fact).

If you truly want to lose weight and be healthier, you should be eating WHOLE foods and not concerned about the calorie count. Sure, some foods may have higher calories than others, but that does not mean the “lower calorie” food is any better for you.

What makes us gain weight is SUGAR, not FAT.

People who are concerned with their weight also turn to eating “fat free” and foods that are “low fat”, this will also not help you with your weight loss goals. Since these fat free foods are replaced with more sugar and carbs, making it worse for your body and decreasing your metabolism.

Now, back to the original point on why diet soda will make you gain weight. It’s rather simple actually if you look at it, yet complex. Sounds confusing doesn’t it? Well, when you drink a diet soda, you are tricking your brain really. When you drink that diet soda, your brain thinks there is sugar coming in your body, and triggers your insulin to take effect. Since there is no sugar coming in your body your insulin shuts down, which can cause diabetes. It’s also been proven that diet soda will increase your risk of type 2 diabetes. Ironic when people who are diagnosed with diabetes turn to diet soda, this just makes it worse for them. Diet soda also decreases your metabolism. Just so many problems with diet soda, it should never be a substitute for “regular” soda. At least, not a healthy one, shame on the food industry and media for making people think otherwise!!

Some Healthy Snack Ideas

Snacking can either break your healthy eating plan or help you along the way. Choosing the right snack is not always an easy thing to do when keeping in mind eating healthy, as some snacks can be high in fat, sugar or carbs or all of the above! Here are some of my favorite Healthy snacks that I enjoy throughout my day:

Hummus and PIta hummus-549420-s. This one I like to call my go to snack or “snack staple” as I have it often and love it! Hummus is a great alternative to other dips like ranch or even peanut butter, which are both fattening and high in calories. Hummus on the other hand as a delicious texture, yummy taste and goes well with anything! or I think so! haha!

Celery and peanut butter

Okay, even though peanut butter is high in fat, sometimes we crave it and having the same thing over and over, will get us sick of that something. So if you want some peanut butter, have it with some celery. Celery is actually negative calories since it has less calories in the food than it takes you to chew it (it takes more calories to chew it in other words). Its a delicious, easy and cheap snack as well

Almonds or another type of legume

Feel like something small that you can just pick up? Instead of reaching for those chips, choose the nuts!! In fact go nutty for the nuts!! They’re good for you, plus low calorie.

Yogurt

If you are in the mood for some dairy, choose an organic nonfat greek yogurt. It has a nice creamy texture and sweet enough to satisfy your sweet tooth. I usually go for the yogurt in the morning vs. afternoon though, that’s just me.

Eating Healthy doesn’t have to Cost $$$

There is a Social Media rant by an Overweight woman claiming “she does not have the funds to eat healthy and go to the gym”. She goes on saying gym memberships are expensive and healthy food is out of her budget.

I call BS on this! (excuse my language), but really, eating healthy IS affordable and there is no need to go to the gym in order to lose weight. If you really want to lose weight you will find a way. This is just another excuse by someone trying to get more tax dollars.

Besides, buying produce at the Grocery store is cheaper than buying junk food sold on the “aisles” . Heck even cookies, candies and cakes get expensive. It is all about budgeting and being smart. Making excuses by saying “you don’t have money to eat healthy” is just bogus and will never help you lose weight..

Losing weight starts with your mind, if a person really wants to live healthier they will. They will obtain free advice to eat healthier on a budget. There is plenty of information out there on how to do so, especially with the web being free.

Eating junk food should be the “luxury”  any way. Its the junk food that causes the Health problems which cause your costs to increase. Eating Healthy on a Budget is actually really easy to do. Here’s an example of some “low cost” healthy meals:

Breakfast: Nonfat or soy yogurt (usually on sale for $1 or less each), but in bulk, even less, Have a Banana with it as well. Less than $2 for 6 of them

Lunch: Bread (bought from the “reduced” aisle is still fresh, especially if you keep in fridge) and lunchmeat

Dinner: Chicken with vegetables (or wheat pasta and vegetables)

Its doable to eat healthy on a budget, if you put your mind to it.
